All things that I love ...

Harvey used to be a fighting dog. His ears torn from battles he was forced into. He flinches when you talk too loud around him. He gets so excited when you prepare his food, as in disbelief that he’s actually going to eat this many days in a row and when you put the food down he kisses you in gratitude. He’s afraid of thunder, soda cans, the TV and when baby Nick Fury meows when he’s hungry. When we first picked up Harvey from the pound half of his face was missing and he was severely underweight. Now he’s a kitten baby sitter.

Movie Trailer of the Day: A female soldier in Iraq or Afghanistan currently is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire. The number of assaults in the last decade is estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands.

This epidemic of rape within the U.S. military is exposed in The Invisible War, an “incendiary” new investigative documentary from Academy Award-nominated director Kirby Dick.

Winner of the Audience Award at Sundance, the film is in theaters June 22.

FINALLY. And I sincerely hope this starts to bring about some change.

Why Double Standards With Gender Roles Is Not “Sexism Against Men”

The fact that boys are given more grief for liking things that are stereotypically feminine than girls who like things that are stereotypically masculine is commonly cited as “sexism against men”. However, the reason for that is because “being female” is often considered to be inferior. When a girl/woman is criticized for transgressing gender roles, it’s generally because of the belief that they are “acting above her station” - i.e. taking on a role that she “doesn’t deserve”. And, yes, that does still happen. When a boy/man is criticized for transgressing gender roles, it’s because of the belief that he is “lowering himself” - i.e. taking on a role that “is beneath him”. So the context is very different.

Of course, we should be supportive of boys like Dyson Kilodavis - and I really do commend his parents for being open-minded of his choices. My heart does go out to the children, boys and girls alike, who are discouraged by their parents from transgressing gender roles - and punished when they do. I don’t think that is right, and children should be free to like what they like.

Nonetheless, it’s the patriarchy that says boys and men can’t like feminine thing. Yes, it does hurt the boys and men who don’t live up to society’s standards of “manliness” - but the reason for that is because women are considered to be weaker than men.

In short, this is general attitude regarding gender roles: When women take on masculine gender roles, they are “raising themselves up to men”. When men take on feminine gender roles, they are “lowering themselves down to women”.

This is a photo of my sister at age one and me at 5. This is the only picture I have where I am holding her.
She died a decade later after this photo taken. It shows the strength of a child who was born physically and mentally disable and her motivation to keep living. She never gave up till the day she died. She survived longer than the doctors predicted. Even on this day, she will always be the strength and courage my family needs to keep living.
She gave me something that no one could ever give me.
She kept battling what life thrown at her and she reminds me everyday I shouldn’t either.
I know there is a family out there that needs care and service for a child with disability.
I’m going to donate a penny for every reblog and like to the children with Microcephaly Foundation on March 18,2012 which is the day of her 17th birthday.
As much money as I can save goes to the foundation.
I also wanted this post to bring awareness and to remind everyone struggling with a love one who has microcephaly or is mental/physical disable know that they aren’t alone. I’m here if you want to talk.
So please reblog to help a child that suffers from a neurodevelopment disorder and the many families that struggle everyday.
Thank you.

This will not make you blog look ugly. This will actually make your blog look beautiful.
