The Elements and their correspondences

E A R T H

Earth represents strength, grounding, prosperity, the material, wealth, success, foundations, death and rebirth. Focus on this element if the goal of your spell is about fertility, prosperity, business or stability. Earth spells may take longer to work, but they’re also more firm and are good if you’re looking for long-term solutions.

Air represents intellect and the mind, wisdom, knowledge; logic as well as abstract thought, intuition and higher consciousness. If you’re seeking freedom, travels, or to enhance your memory and focus - focus on Air spells! Air is whimsical and amiable, personally I haven’t found it useful for more serious spells, but it does wonders for my studies.

GENDER: Masculine SEASON: Spring DIRECTION: East HOUR: Dawn

COLOURS: Yellow, White, Sky Blue, Pastels ANIMALS: Birds, Spiders, Butterflies HERBS/PLANTS: Lavender, Birch, Vervain, Dill, Aspen INSTRUMENTS: Flute (Wind instruments)

STAR SIGNS: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius STONES/GEMS: Amethyst, Opal, Alexandrite, Beryl RITUAL TOOLS: Incense, Wand RITUAL FORMS: Fanning, Tossing into air, Suspending in a high place  TAROT SUIT: Swords

Fire represents energy, passion, purification, love, inspiration, desire, will, courage, power, leadership, sexuality. In spellcraft, focusing on Fire is good for purification, healing and love spells; it’s the best element for quick, strong spells. Although, Fire is fierce in essence, and Fire spells are susceptible - they should be well thought out.

GENDER: Masculine SEASON: Summer DIRECTION: South HOUR: Noon

COLOURS: Red, Orange, Gold ANIMALS: Snakes, Lions, Horses HERBS/PLANTS: Cacti, Cinnamon, Pepper, Basil INSTRUMENTS: Guitar (Stringed instruments)

Water represents purification as well; though it’s focused more on the soul and the subconscious rather than the physical, material world. Water stands for emotion, intuition, wisdom, eternal movement, reflection, lunar energy. Focusing on the Water element is good for psychic abilities, getting in tune with your inner self, mysteries, friendships, love, dreams and sleep.

GENDER: Feminine SEASON: Autumn DIRECTION: West HOUR: Dusk

COLOURS: Blue, Indigo, Silver ANIMALS: Otters, Fish, Sea Mammals, Frogs HERBS/PLANTS: Lotus, Water Lilies, Aloe, Gardenia INSTRUMENTS: Cymbal, Bell (Resonant instruments)

Alright, so we all know that Matthew wears the green carnation for a few reasons: he loves Oscar wilde, who also wore one, and it symbolizes a love of what is beautiful and fluid sexuality

BUT

I was reading Forever Fallen, and jem was singing the rhyme about shadowhunters and the colors they use and wear and I came across this:

"Green will mend our broken hearts"

So from what I've noticed throughout chain of gold Matthew has death and tragedy written all over but now we kniw that to shadowhunters GREEN MEANS RECOVERY. there is hope for Matthew Fairchild yet.

Thank you for coming to my Ted talk

This is definitely Matthew Fairchild

notre dame is burning.

this is ok.

it has happened before. it will happen again. it has been lost before. it will be lost again. and again. and again. and again. art and architecture are transient, and temporary, and 850 years may seem like a lot to the individual, who will live maybe 100 if they are very lucky and very healthy, but even the pyramids at saqqara have only existed for about 6000 years and that’s still not all that much, if you consider the grand scheme of things.

yes, this is terrible. as someone who is deeply religious and literally a professional historian with a focus on art and architecture, this is terrible. im mourning. im gutted. im horrified and upset and miserable. but.

it’s not over.

victor hugo wrote hunchback because notre dame du paris was in the process of collapsing and falling apart, and revitalized the entire world’s focus and love for this church, and that was not even 200 years ago. it led to it being renovated.

the roof has fallen in. the scars of fires are on its buttresses. the rose window has fallen out. the beams and piers have collapsed. the spire has toppled. the stones have suffered, and will suffer again, but it is not gone.

renovation work is essential. sometimes things collapse and burn and break and have to come back. it’s not a terrorist attack, it’s renovation, an accident, but we have so much evidence, history, carefully documented everything on one of the most studied places in the world.

it’s not the end.

Hey so, French person here. And also an ex History student. I’m here to say: Please listen to o.p. above.

Obviously everyone is shocked but here’s a few important key facts:

  • The roof is completely gone. Part of it dated back from the 13th century but the rest was from the 19th. The stone arch roof under the top roof is fine.
  • One of the three main stained glass rose windows has fallen out. Most of the other stained glass windows are okay.
  • The spire has fallen down and that’s the saddest part. BUT! It was in the process of being restored and the 16 statues that were there were removed just four days ago! So they’re fine.
  • The main structure is still here and nothing has “burned down” unlike what some people have been saying.
  • The “treasure” (sacred objects) is safe.

Notre Dame is still there. It’s just damaged. Almost nothing was lost today, and nobody was wounded either. It’s scary, but it’s gonna be okay.

This is really reassuring

Chain of Gold publication

So this is my least favorite kind of announcement and the kind I try to avoid having to make. Unfortunately, the time has come where the situation has pretty much been decided for me. For most of my adult life, I’ve suffered from pretty severe endometriosis. It’s a disease that affects ten percent of women. Lots of you may be familiar with it because of that. What a lot of people don’t know is that there sometimes comes a point where the endo can no longer be controlled by hormonal drugs and surgery has to come into the picture. That’s where I am right now. I really had hoped I could push through and finish Chain of Gold before I went into surgery. It’s not a dangerous procedure, but it isn’t a small one either. Unfortunately while I was on tour with Holly I was having more and more severe symptoms, and when I returned home I was having pain so bad that I was passing out. You guys may have noticed I haven’t been online as much as usual since about February. My symptoms have been affecting my work, my energy (endometrosis can cause anemia because of internal bleeding) my ability to even get up and go downstairs. Going to Austin for the book signing I just did was a matter of a LOT of codeine (and more blood than I would have ideally liked in my airplane travel.) So to cut to the chase, I realized I wouldn’t be able to make it another four months without surgery. Being in so much pain has a debilitating effect not just on me but on my work. It’s hard to concentrate and painkillers can control the pain, but make me sleepy and unfocused. With the goal of both taking care of my health and being able to write the best books I can, I agreed along with my publisher that me going through surgery and recovery now was the only possible option, even though it does mean that Chain of Gold will have to be moved back. It will now be published 3/3/2020 — so in 11 months instead of seven. Lost Book of the White will now be published next year on September 1st, 2020. It’s only four months, but I know it’s disappointing and upsetting to hear. All I can say is that, in order to try to keep the wait from being too painful, I’ll be releasing a free short story or piece of flash fiction from/about TLH and its characters every month starting in May of this year and ending in February of next year. (I had been hoping to do something like this anyway, but I wouldn’t have been able to definitely do them or do as many if the book publication date hadn’t changed.) Those who are on my mailing list will get the stories first —a few days later they’ll be posted publicly for everyone. It’s always hard when real-life considerations crash into the creative process. I already have a first draft of Chain that’s in revisions and I can’t wait for you to experience the story of James, Cordelia, Lucie, Matthew, Anna, and so many others. I also can’t wait for you guys to join Magnus and Alec’s new adventure in Lost Book of the White. In the meantime, hopefully you can be sustained by Red Scrolls, Ghosts of the Shadow Market (coming in June), and the short stories and teasers and fanart for Last Hours that I’m so looking forward to sharing with you! xoxo Cassie
