you know there actually is a meaningful difference between 'men's' and 'women's' deodorant beyond the selection of scents. 'mens' plays better with pit hair and doesn't pill up in it and 'womens' tends to have a more powdery finish to help prevent chafing. so really the two genders are actually hairy and bald.

realizing this was such a paradigm shift for me and i have to wonder what other "uselessly" gendered products are like this, where they actually are different in a way that would be useful to consumers but some marketing department decided instead of just saying what the difference is, to prescribe which you need based on the most arbitrary metric, so nebulous that what it even means varies from person to person. as if they think you're too dumb to look at "anti-chafing powder formula" and "lightweight gel formula" and decide for yourself which one would work best.

Literally almost every millennial I know has a memory of accidentally walking in on their parents or hearing their parents having sex. It's fucking normal. Human beings have sex. Your parents fuck. Get over it. Being weird about it isn't healthy.

My parents used to “take naps” every Sunday after church, from the time I was very small, onward.

When I was younger their bedroom was on the ground floor of the house and me and my sister slept upstairs. But when I was about 9 we moved to a house where all the bedrooms were on the second floor. It was one of those Reagan-era colonials that filled the Midwest like so much mulch in a playground.

So as it happened, their bedroom was directly above the kitchen. I mean their bed, had it fallen through the floor for whatever reason, would have landed more-or-less perfectly in the space between the counters and the fridge.

And so every Sunday we’d come home and id hang out in the family room (behind the garage, across the house from the kitchen) and my sister would go to her bedroom and my parents would “take a nap”.

Around the time I was 12 or 13 I started getting more of an actual understanding of how sex worked, mechanically speaking, vs the sort of broad-strokes version that preteen me got from my fairly liberal parents. Anyway, one day I’m making myself some pasta in the kitchen, and I hear this rhythmic squeaking from above me.

See, my parents had this really, really rickety and fragile ikea-style bed that they’d had for years and years. And I’d heard these noises for literal years. But suddenly it clicked what was happening. And so many giggles were had by me.

A couple of months after that I was talking to my mom in her room, I’m sitting on the bed and she’s standing around doing something it other. Maybe putting away laundry. And I’m just kinda sitting there, rocking back and forth, stimming.

And mom goes “oh don’t do that, the bed squeaks a lot” and I just look at her and without missing a beat go “oh yeah, I know.”

Anyway that’s the story of how I mortified my mother into buying a new bed.

also, I would argue that treating sex like some disgusting morally disgusting thing is MORE LIKELY to make it traumatizing!

children are capable of understanding at least the basic gist of sex and reproduction, and are able to understand that it's something adults do alone together sometimes. turning it into this fucked up disgusting hidden act that only addicts and sex offenders do is just how you makes people repressed and traumatized, and prevent them from understanding what a healthy relationship with sex and sexuality looks like.

I know it's a thing on here to treat ppl who are unamused by horoscope shit as wet blankets but frankly there is something uniquely aggravsting abt telling another person your star sign in order to participate in what you assume is lighthearted convo and watching a respected adult peer actively adjust how they feel about you as a person in real time bc of the day of the year you happened to be born on

Disgust has absolutely no ethical weight. If you are basing your ethical positions on the emotion of disgust you should stop, it is entirely unjustified and leads to a huge amount of harm.

Many things can be true at once.

Israel is an apartheid state that unjustly occupies Palestinian land.

Israel is a Jewish state.

Jews worldwide do not bear the responsibility of the Israeli army or government.

The American government backs Israel, largely because of the efforts of evangelical Christian lobbyists. Wether or not Jewish Americans want this is irrelevant to the USA military.

The American government is rooted in white supremacy and antisemitism, and is constantly verging on Christian theocracy.

Criticism of Israel, while necessary, can very easily be co-opted into antisemitism. It needs to be handled carefully.

We can expect both antisemitic and Islamophobic hate crimes to spike in the coming weeks.

Jews and Muslims are not enemies. We have to remember that and stand up for each other.
