So You Want To Read Batman Comics But Have No Idea Where To Start

So: you’re new to the DC Comics fandom and are interested in Batman and his family. Maybe you already know a bit about them and are just looking to figure out where to start reading actual comics. Maybe you know nothing. Maybe you know a whole lot about one character but want to start reading more about another one.

Whichever it is, I’m here to help! There’s a wide range of Batman/Batfamily comics (for all ages, moods, and types of people), and I’m happy to meet people where they are and help people dive into comics. On that note, brace yourselves, because this is going to be a long post. Recs start under the cut.

——IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT READING COMICS——

Superhero comics are traditionally written in what’s known as runs; an author gets to have an extended period on an ongoing (or limited) title where they (traditionally) write in 4-8 issue story arcs; think of these arcs as chapters in a potentially never-ending book. These individual issues are colloquially known as floppies. So when I talk about “Tom Taylor’s run” on the Nightwing title, for example, I’m talking about the (as of now) current writer, who’s been the main author on the Nightwing title since March 2021 and whose story arcs begin with Nightwing #78. Every so often, titles end, the principal author on the titles switch up, or they’ll have “guest/interim authors” come in to do single issues or a single story arc.

These story arcs are then collected in hardcovers or ‘trade paperbacks’ (generally referred to as trades, occasionally TPBs); both collect the entire story arc (plus bonus/behind the scenes material, in some cases) in a single paperback/hardback book. Trades are super useful if you want to read an entire story at one time, want to be economical about your comics spending, and/or want to read things in order. Occasionally, if a writer has a particularly long run on a title or a big company event happens, you get published omnibuses that collect an entire event or run (or part of it, if the event is big enough); omnis are very expensive up-front, but ultimately they tend to be good deals and are often curated well. These collections are all generally also released digitally. Frankly, unless you’re into comics collecting, want individual issues for their pretty covers, or are supporting a currently ongoing run, I would default to buying trades/omnibuses where possible. It’s simply cheaper and easier for reading.

List Notes: Each character list is sorted vaguely chronologically according to a combination of IRL publication dates and the character’s personal timeline. Big caveat that these are not all-inclusive reading lists; I’m just trying to hit major character highlights. You should also note that many comics contain multiple Batfam members due to the ridiculous number of crossover events and the solid integration of the Batfamily as a whole into each others’ books in the post-90s era. Comic rec tl;drs are given at the end of each character’s list. Most of the links will take you to Amazon/Comixology, but I also talk about various ways to access and read comics at the bottom of this post.

Secondary Note: DC Comics works in three universes: the pre-Crisis universe (everything published from the beginning of DC Comics until the Crisis on Infinite Earths event in 1986), the post-Crisis universe (everything published between 1986 and 2011), and the post-Flashpoint universe (2011-now).

In 2011, DC completely rebooted their universe following the ‘Flashpoint’ event. This new universe (interchangably called the New 52 universe, post-Flashpoint universe, or Prime Earth) drastically changed many characters’ histories, personalities, and relationships with each other (sometimes for the better, most of the time for the worse). The early years of the post-Flashpoint universe are an absolute incoherent mess continuity-wise; DC’s been trying to sort it all out over the past few years with the Rebirth and Infinite Frontier events (with varying degrees of success), and there are definitely some bright bits and pieces, but it is not my favored universe (though I will certainly recommend it where needed or when it’s good).

Now: let’s get started, shall we? Lists below the cut (please view on blog instead of on dashboard for easy readability and formatting purposes):

early seasons of House MD are so precious to me. House shifts between being prickly and doing soft little things because he hasn’t refined his persona into a suit of armor yet. Cuddy manages to be gorgeous in the most dubious pantsuits imaginable, Wilson is written like a two-dimensional female side-character who’s only there to show cleavage (aka cheekbone) and then leave. Foreman is ready to fight House on his very first day of work and Cameron still thinks she can change the moral trajectory of everyone around her through sheer perseverance. Chase is there to be Australian and have Catholic issues and daddy issues and malpractice issues and blackmail issues.

Saw this and had to get up, walk around my backgarden semi-screaming (its 11pm here rn) because OMG! CAN TEENAGERS NOT ALLOWED TO BE SILLY!!! ALSO WILL ONLY CALLS HIM THIS FUCKING TWICE!!!!

Once in the beginning when his saviour complex is getting in the way of seeing nico other than someone he needs to protect, cradle, and all that stuff. He only sees him as his "bundle of darkness".

Then one more time at the end when he DOESNT SEE HIM LIKE THAT ANYMORE! BECAUSE HE HAD A WHOLE CHARACTER ARCH AROUND IT?????

Also it's odd ppl complain about this, but never "seaweed brain" or "wise girl" with percabeth. I wonder why? (Homophobia, the answer is Homophobia.)

It's just so unfuriating T T

Also Nico calls him care bear. It goes both ways. What happened to pet names man. I call nico MY little morderous ball of darkness

whatever you do, don't think about Jason checking Camp Jupiter's senatorial records when he returns to New Rome after the war

don't think about him flipping straight to 'October 2009' once nobody's looking over his shoulder

don't think about him scanning the records for his own name, wondering idly how many search parties the camp must've sent out to find him, how many resources they must've wasted

don't think about him finding a single line in Reyna's handwriting – "send party to search for Jason?" – under the tab Recovery Commissions

don't think about his heart dropping down to his stomach as he sees the outcome recorded beside it – outvoted by Senate, 8-2 – and no more mentions of his own name until June.

don't think about it.

don't.

When Wilson and Taub were hanging out playing racketball without House he said that it could be true for Wilson since he played tennis in college but it wouldn't be for Taub because he is jewish and therefore not "athletic"... but as far as im concerned Wilson is also jewish so why are they different?

When Jason gets anxious, he recites thongs. Usually rules and random things from New Rome, like a calming mantra. He'll be standing there and not showing any signs of anxiety, and then under his breath, he's just reciting random laws to try and calm down. To me.

The existence of Preacher Jason made me believe for a second this was about Jason Todd

does anyone have that one painting with the ghosts standing in the water?

like theyre in the water and they’re staring off to the side and there’s something so very wrong about it and they’re bending over and trailing along like deer in the headlights but you can’t see what they’re staring at which might make it even scarier

like this

beach day beach day

by the way, the artist is olivia steen (website linked above) and apparently, her other works are just as breathtakingly eerie

look at this!!! it’s cool as hell!!

it's really striking to me how everyone had so much to say when It Ends With Us was released earlier this year, and Blake Lively was getting slammed for phrasing her promotion of the film like a cute chick flick + the interview she did 8 years ago with Kjersti Flaa, but since news broke that she's suing Justin Baldoni (+ others on his team) over sexual harassment (and the list goes on, this isn't some one off) it's just crickets. Why was the one short interview and a single sentence enough to get everyone talking, but as soon as this woman starts detailing how she and other women on the set were mistreated, now no one is paying attention ??

Look obviously I do not know if the allegations being made by Blake Lively against Justin Baldoni are true or not but I think this is a very good reminder to avoid participating in Internet-wide smear campaigns against women.

THANK UUUU. I swear people engage in these conversations like they are the picture perfect example of grace and good behaviour so they have the right to be scrutinizing people

Anonymous asked:

I’m reading the lawsuit now. I’m not sure. How can I tell if it’s legit vs lies?

Genuine thanks for this question and not just immediately assuming that she's lying.

Look, at the end of the day, none of us were there. The only people that know what truly went down are the people that were on that set (which is true of any lawsuit), but here's what's really convincing me.

First things first, Baldoni hired Melissa Nathan back in August to run his public relations (and this article even mentions the allegations that he made Lively uncomfortable). Nathan worked for Johnny Depp during his defamation trial against Amber Heard, and it has been found that a technique called "astroturfing" was used against Heard on social media during this trial. Astroturfing is defined as "the deceptive practice of presenting an orchestrated marketing or public relations campaign in the guise of unsolicited comments from members of the public." Basically, artificially creating hate or hype for a public figure but making it seem organic. If you remember the Depp/Heard trial, you remember how much social media seemed to turn against her. If you remember this summer, you remember how much social media seemed to turn against Blake Lively. The fact that the same public relations team was on the other side of both alleged smear campaigns is a red flag.

Second, the text messages that have been released between Baldoni and the PR team are, in my opinion, incredibly damning. One member of the team, Jennifer Abel, texted Nathan "I think you guys need to be tough and show the strength of what you guys can do in these scenarios. He wants to feel like she can be buried." Nathan responded "Of course - but you know when we send over documents we can't send over the work we will or could do because that could get us in a lot of trouble. We can't write we will destroy her. Imagine if a document saying all the things that he wants ends up in the wrong hands. You know we can bury anyone." Right below are some screenshots from the New York Times article:

Later texts also involve praise for this article

Now, is it possible that all of these texts have been faked? Of course. But they are also lengthy (I did not include all of them here) and considering what I mentioned above, unlikely.

Thirdly, I'm just considering who has more to gain from this. I will admit my own bias here - I've never bought the idea that women by and large make allegations to become rich or famous or to gain sympathy. Amber Heard is probably still one of the most hated women on the planet. Name five of Bill Cosby's accusers off of the top of your head.

But what does each party have to gain? If Baldoni loses this case and is found in the public eye to have sexually harassed the women on the set of It Ends With Us, that's probably the end of his career. As far as I know, he doesn't have the industry goodwill that Roman Polanski or Woody Allen or even Johnny Depp do, and he will most likely start losing acting and directing roles. If he wins, and the public decides that Lively is lying, his career won't be destroyed. It will almost certainly have been set back, and there will always be people who'll look at him differently, but overall he should be fine. He may even gain a new fanbase.

If Lively loses this case and is found to have been lying, her career is tarnished forever. She will undoubtedly be known as the "next Amber Heard," and she will lose out on acting roles. The taint may even carry over to her husband. If she wins, and the public decides that Baldoni did in fact sexually harass women on set, she will probably be fine. Like Baldoni, there will always be people who'll believe that she was lying, but she'll be overall fine. However, it's important to note that she had a third option: to not pursue this at all. If she chooses not to pursue legal action against Baldoni, both of their careers remain unimpacted. While there would still have been a negative public perception of her, it probably would have blown over eventually. A lawsuit and possible trial is much more permanent in people's memories. So to me, the fact that she's choosing to pursue this knowing what the outcome of her losing would be speaks volumes.

Finally, the fact that her lawsuit states that other women on set were harassed and felt uncomfortable. Again, could be a lie, but that is a lie that is very easy to disprove. And if the women who worked on this set testify that they never felt uncomfortable, that will permanently damage her case. It just feels like too much of a risk to play with if you're lying.

Of course, don't just take my word for it - do your own research, seek out differing opinions, etc. but those are my views. I hope they helped in some way!

they were contemporarily hated for just being these giant grey monoliths

thinking about house md season 8 episode 2 when house and wilson do their usual top 10 anime breakups and top 10 anime comebacks routine and house SO GENUINELY says to wilson “i like you, i have fun with you.“ and then wilson says “the thing is house, i don’t like you.” and then 5 minutes later wilson PUNCHES house and then says “dinner later?” THESE TWO OH MY FUCKING GOD.

my official stance is a pregnancy is whatever the pregnant person wants it to be. if it’s a 4 week old clump of cells and they want to call it a baby it’s a baby. if they're 20 weeks and they want to call it a parasite it’s a parasite. if they're 39 weeks and call it a fetus it’s a fetus. “why are you so sad about miscarrying at 6 weeks it was literally just an embryo” because that was their baby. “how can you get an abortion at three months” because that wasn’t a baby. hope that helps.
