can someone explain the WAG and SAG-AFTRA strike to me like I'm a child. who does it affect, what can I as a consumer do to help, what does it mean for both current and future productions, etc. etc.
The writers' guild (WGA) and actors' guild (SAG-AFTRA) of America are both on strike as of today, July 13. Both guilds have good reason to believe the future of their industries rests on getting better contract protections against AI, against understaffing and underpaying, against laughably small residual payments, and more. (Read the WGA's demands and the studios' absurdly terrible responses here.)
This primarily affects American TV shows and films, though international productions and co-productions with any American guild members working on them (such as House of the Dragon) are also affected by work stoppages. For a more comprehensive list of overseas shows/films affected by the imminent actors' guild strike, see here.
What it means for actors and writers is that they will be picketing the studios and out of a job for the foreseeable future (previous WGA strikes lasted 100+ days; this one might be longer.)
Fans and the public can financially support both the striking writers/actors and the below-the-line crew and support staff affected by the strike via the Entertainment Community Fund or the Green Envelope Grocery Aid fund (more info on Twitter here, on Tumblr here.)
Neither the WGA nor SAG-AFTRA has officially called for a boycott of streaming services; the main issue right now is drying up studio pipelines of film/TV to really hit them where it hurts: running out of shows and films to premiere. Strikes are supposed to hurt, and when this fall rolls around and the networks/streaming services suddenly don't have anything new, that will hurt.
It's up to each individual to decide to cancel streaming services in solidarity or not. (Keep in mind that shows premiering before the fall were already in the can before the strike was called and might depend on viewership for another season. Also, if a future official boycott is called down the line, you may want to maintain your leverage for that.)
Current productions have been halted and future productions will be delayed until the strike is over. In the meantime, watch old stuff and vocally support the strikers via social media & to any IRL friends/family who may not know as much as you about the current state of the entertainment industry!
Hope the execs at Universal Pictures get absolutely fucked by all the fines and fees for damaging the trees at the picket line to sabotage the strikes. 🙏🏻
Man, the telepathy in Madoka Magica isn’t touched on much but there’s something so… insidious about the way it works. The power to do so is through Kyuubey. You can have your private conversations but you can never hide from the all hearing Kyuubey. He will eavesdrop when you talk out loud and he’ll hear directly if you use the one method that should be private. Whatever information he can get to manipulate you. The fact he gives this power to non magical girls who are considering it just gives him another way to talk them into it.
terfs be like i’m joining the fight against restrictive gender roles on the side of the restrictive gender roles
we did it patrick we saved the city
The prospect of shounen/seinen being seen as more “general audience” not only by publishers but also western consumers is kinda depressing
Me gripping the manga/anime community with the force of a 1000 suns : if you actually listened to mangakas complaints about how these magazine companies are runned and pushed you would understand that josei/shoujo are only “dying”(not really true) due to marketing restrictions/bias and misogyny
Most of the renowned seinen authors use the templates and get inspired by shoujo/josei imagery and storytelling beats for emotional/dramatic narratives , if you want to learn how to do character drama I’m begging you to start reading some shoujo/josei , yes even if it’s trash , you’re missing out on so much content I promise you

its always “shoujo/josei is dying” and never : because men rarely cross demographics the stories in this demographic is barely exposed and the people running these magazines have very narrow ideas and gender biased marketing that is WHY shounen/seinen have not only a high female reader ship but most manga authors choose these specific magazines because they know they’ll get more exposure
very happy to be able to share my piece of pokemon BW1 iris for @pkmnbwzine !! She is one of my favourite characters in the franchise of all time so getting her was a dream come true and I loved painting this :DD!!
to those who want to help transgender people in Russia, please consider donating to centre-t; a bill has recently been passed that forbids medical transition and will have extreme consequences on quality of life that is already steadily declining
The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike is so important in establishing rights and precedent for AI content. They are absolutely fighting for us. The possibility for AI abuse and misuse is at an all time high and there are already many who are pushing and using those tools for nefarious and unethical purposes. Actors and writers fighting against studios who want to use AI to steal their likeness and use it indefinitely without pay, or steal their writing style or use AI to write scripts and only hire people to edit them these are all things that can be applied outside of the entertainment industry as well. “My voice is my password” account protection is null and void. Face recognition soon will be as well. The amount of misinformation and lies that will be spread upon the public especially with the upcoming election will make the Facebook shit look like child’s play.
Every legal stand against the use of AI generated content creates precedent and shows law makers where public opinion stands.
I know AI generated art is cool to play with and seems harmless but it’s progressing so rapidly we do not have the technological abilities to contain it. Any filters for inappropriate content —and I don’t just mean porn but bomb recipes, nerve gas recipes can be gotten around relatively easily. There is no way to reliably detect original content from AI content. AI content is already beginning to fool search engines and results. Wikipedia articles and even news articles will soon be sourcing information and “first hand” evidence that’s completely fake. There are people trying to combat this, software that protects artists art from being data scraped, but it’s a temporary bandaid that will eventually be gotten around. Any encoding or software solution that would automatically “watermark” AI content could easily be removed. Elon Musk’s legal team has already tried to claim video evidence of him stating something legally binding, should be thrown out because the court can’t ascertain whether the video was real or AI generated. It puts all video and photographic evidence into real doubt and makes creating damning criminal evidence laughably easy.
This isn’t fear mongering. It’s just real fear. There’s already several experts and scientists trying to ring every alarm bell possible.
We need regulation and legislation immediately l mean like yesterday. And even with it, experts don’t know how enforceable it will be. But god damn had we better try. And anything we do try will be that much harder if a large portion of the entertainment industry is indiscriminately using this new technology to make content without having to pay people who inspired it or directly contributed to it’s existence. If we allow companies to profit of the use of AI we will all be pretty fucked. People have already lost their jobs. Entire industries may become obsolete and we should do everything in our ability to stop it.
Part of that means stop using the cool free AI apps and tools. It’s not actually free. And we will all end up paying for it the more you use it.
I remember reading this a while back, I’m glad it’s made it’s way to my dash again
things like this are more important than 90% of tumblr
bye im crying
This comic made me feel things!
Hey, the source is not credited properly, so I thought that should be mentioned here. The short comic is from volume 5 of “Flight” comic anthology series. You can get a physical copy if you want to support the comic! The comic artist’s name is Svetlana Chmakova. Please check out her other works “Awkward”, “Brave”, and “Crush” at the library or bookstore! Also available in the ebook version. They all appear in the cute style and the color palette like the short comic.
For a fun fact, Svetlana Chmakova is the same artist who created “Dramacon” and “Nightschool” manga. Also the manga adaptation of ”Witch & Wizard”!
