comic writing is very based in the idea of character voice which is why it's so jarring to me how many writers are getting away with their characters literally not having any distinguishable personalities or styles of talking/narrating. that's the problem with "quips" it's not the presence of quips it's that every character talks and jokes exactly the same so the barrier between the reader and the writer is gone

one of the most frustrating things about current dc & what's slowly starting to make me lose interest altogether is this like… bizarre nuclear family-ization of everything & everyone
a lot of the appeal of superhero "families" came from them not fitting into the norm of what a family is "supposed" to look like. the dynamics between every single person were very unique and very few if any of their relationships really fit into any traditional family roles (because that's kinda the entire point of found families/families of choice)
but now, it's like them not resembling a conventional family unit is seen as a bad thing that needs to be "fixed," and everybody's histories & relationships are being deliberately watered down and pruned of any and all complexity so they can be easily slotted into conventional family roles
idk i just think "he's like a brother to me because of how much he's come to mean to me after everything we've been through" is a whole lot more compelling & meaningful than "we've spoken all of like 2 words to each other for as long as we've known each other, and there has been 0 development of our actual relationship, but the group we're both a part of adheres to a traditional family structure, so he is, by definition, my brother."
#right#like it's hard to put what's been happening into words#but this… push for more biological family members to heroes#watered down family dynamics that they have to stick so many of the supporting casts into#effectively making all the heroes supporting casts kinda feel and work the same and robbing them of their uniqueness#it's just kinda… slowly pushing me away with how cloying pervasive it's become#from dumbing down already established dynamics and relationships#to introducing a *ton* of new characters that fit this mold and push out the old (and often times) more interesting characters#it's just obnoxious at atp#like I enjoyed stargirl and the lost children#but how are they gonna fit all these new characters in? did jay garrick need a biological daughter?#I fell in love with dc in no small part bcs of their found family aspects but the last ten years it feels like dc has done everything#to rid themselves of that aspect as if it where a flaw all along and not one of their main strengths#idk#dc#comic book bullshit
