For all of my US followers for whom general public official election day is coming up (Nov. 7th) PLEASE do not become so disillusioned with the current state of higher power politicians that you skip out on voting for local offices; off year and local elections are already critically unemphasized but these are the people who have the most direct power over jails, police, school curriculum, etc. Do not let your grief be weaponized as a distraction from also continuing to fight police brutality, queer and bipoc censorship in schools, bodily autonomy, housing inequality, etc, on the smaller scale battlefields where every vote truly does count

It can be so frustrating to vote in small local elections because info is harder to find, but if you take the time to google vote411 and go to their website, get your personal ballot, and then look up the candidates, you will always find that two people are running for a local school board, and one is a lovely person who has slowly been effecting positive change for three decades and the other is a real estate broker who wants more money. And then you have the power to vote against the money asshole and for the nice person in a race that can genuinely go down to a handful of votes. Feels awesome, man. Vote out the bitch who voted against reasonable COVID measures in your local high school 3 years ago.

Vote in your local, off-year elections because if you don't, that's how the book burners get on the school board

The presidential vote is bullshit but as someone with a parent in education in Texas PLEASE VOTE AS LIBERAL AS POSSIBLE ON YOUR SCHOOL BOARD IT MATTERS A LOT!! Despite living somewhere semi-rural as a kid I had a very solid history course w proper teachings on the horrors of colonization and a basis in philosophy. After I graduated, a very conservative school board got voted in and started gutting what used to be considered a great history program of anything considered 'liberal' (despite being factual). Like, shit used to be pushing against leftism in some of my classes!!! So checking your school board votes is huge because it changes how THOUSANDS of young people get brought up. The education system is fucked in a lot of ways but it is also mandatory at this time and going to seed a lot of people's outlooks and personalities and the school board is vital in making sure the curriculum isn't too conservative (some schools are cutting evolution teaching in Current Year!!!!).

A good way to see who's on the ballot and what bills do what is to just go to a polling location and look up signs or ask around honestly, or find out what your local Independent School District is called and just look up their board.

Local elections are one place you can actually make a marked difference in your community. Broader electoralism is bullshit, but hometown isn't! I promise! I will not be voting for the president either! I WILL vote school board!

hey! the house of representatives has unveiled a 14 billion dollar bill to arm Israel (by cutting the IRS budget, naturally, and making it easier for rich ppl to continue to avoid taxes.) the first hearing on this bill is TODAY, NOVEMBER 1, at 4PM ET. good time to call your reps and tell them a) not to vote for this and b) to urge them to call for (at minimum) a ceasefire.

also: the white house comment line is open at 202-456-1111 (I've seen that their hours are T-Th 11-3 ET but I can't find confirmation of that.) you may have to wait on hold for a bit (laughably they have the exact same hold music as my hospital's billing department. we live in a society.)

I wasn't exact in my wording- the bill does have 4 billion dollars going directly to Israel directly, specifically mentioning Israel's missile systems. the other amounts are for the US DoD, although there's also a 3.5 billion appropriation for a "foreign military financing program" which is explicitly stated to be intended for Israel, and another 4.4 billion dollars for "DoD operations and maintenance" are explicitly earmarked in part as "replacement of defense articles from the stocks of the DoD...provided to Israel." also, given that the bill explicitly states that the domestic arm up is for a response to Israel, I have absolutely zero confidence that they don't want to send US troops over there as well as just US bombs.

i believe in accessibility so ive been trying to keep the tone of my posts entry-level and relatively civil. i can afford this much because im not palestinian so i have some degree of removal. but if you guys saw the state of my inbox, you would understand why refusing to justify, explain or clarify anything might be more dignified. there are almost ten thousand people dead right now. i feel like a lot of people are just not understanding the weight of this. more children have been killed in gaza in the past three weeks than in all of the world’s conflicts combined in each of the past three years. this is so far beyond crime, so far beyond mass murder, that sometimes i think entertaining questions about it at all is complicity in and of itself. in a normal world, the entire global apparatus, every international body, would be falling over itself to stop this. the prospect of so many civilians—and most significantly children—dead is actually the worst-case scenario. it is what international law was created to prevent. i say children specifically not because adult palestinians are not equally valuable, but because this is a war on children. gaza's population is 50% children. these airstrikes are most lethal on the smallest and most vulnerable bodies. entire buildings are crumbling on kids. they are being murdered in their homes, by their homes.

deliberately. by people with the most advanced military and surveillance technology in the world. by people who know exactly where every single civilian in gaza is. by people who have their phone numbers and send them threatening texts. by people who have drones observing their every movement. by people who are watching them starve, bombing their bakeries, barricading their water. they bring down buildings on children on purpose.

it's a genocide. and still we talk.
