@imhaileybytheway-blog

trying to be all I can be.

The promo for crying in the club, camilas new single looks absolutely amazing! And the fact that it’s all over the world makes me so proud of my favorite Cuban! I’ve been with you since the beginning and now we’re finally gonna see you rise like the star you are @waakeme-up ! :)

My whole family assumes I’m straight and it’s like if I say anything like “wow that girl is so pretty” they’re like “you’re pretty too don’t compare yourself’ like no mom the only thing I’m comparing is the width between her legs and how well I could fit.

Literally best thing I’ve ever heard.

Progressive Era Review done to Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud.”

Good luck to everyone taking the APUSH exam on Friday. I hear binge watching my vids is a great way to get a 5 (provided that you’ve already put the work in).

The New APUSH Curriculum

This new curriculum has dealt changes in the essay rubrics and expectations, the multiple choice layouts, the new short answer section, and the thematic learning objectives. The Essays: There is now only one long essay and one document-based question. You will have 95 minutes to complete them (a 15 minute reading time for the DBQ and 40 suggested minutes for each essay). DBQ- One of the changes that has shocked teachers and students alike is the requirement of the use of all or all but one of the documents. Furthermore, you must analyze each of the sources used. (For more information on analysis, feel free to send Avery an ask pansexualnotmansexual) One other factor (not sure if new) is pulling in outside information. Next, you must provide context for each of the documents. You also must demonstrate “historical thinking skills.” Roughly, this means to apply one of the following: Continuity and Change Over Time, Comparison, Causation, or Periodization. You may request for a separate post on those. Long Essay- A major change this year is the application of thematic learning to the long essay (and even the DBQ). The themes (which will have their own post) include Identity; Work, Exchange, Technology; Peopling; Politics and Power; America in the World; Environment and Geography; and Ideas, Beliefs, Culture. Like the DBQ, you should also apply your “historical thinking skills.” Lastly, is the “synthesis”– which is just a fancy word for building on your thesis’s argument, analysis, and context.

The Short Answer: This will be 20% of your score and takes up 45 minutes. There are 4 set questions (normally based on a prompt or document) with 3 sub-questions (titled a, b, and c). That is roughly 11 minutes per question, with 3-4 minutes a sub-question. I like to leave my leftover time proofreading my answers. As I have mentioned before, the short answer is roughly one paragraph: 4-6 sentences a sub-question. It should not model after an essay.

The Multiple Choice: This will now be based on a document. By document, I mean a cartoon, speech, diary entry, table, graph, etc. The first question following the document will most likely be to analyze the author/source. The next is probably asking for context. Following that, you can probably expect a question focusing on who would agree/disagree with this standpoint. The question(s) after that will be more narrow questions focused on the situation (somewhat off topic).

APUSH Study Guides

Hello, everyone! Many of you have requested study guides for AP US History since I opened the offer up - and I have delivered!

Here is the first study guide. It will be part of this page on this blog found under the ‘explore!’ menu. I will update it very frequently! I expect to have most of them done for every era by tomorrow. Maybe even all of them. We just don’t know.

Eventually I’d like to make infographics of all the eras but that’s hard and I am a mere student living life, blogging, exercising, watching shows………..

US History Videos (and using songs to study!)

Here’s a collection of US history videos (besides those crash course videos by that John Green guy). Disclaimer: This blog is not responsible for any of the content provided in these videos.

Review Videos

  • Adam Norris (of course)—His videos have reviews designed specifically for APUSH. He has a series based on The American Pageant as well as some general review videos. He’s been making new videos for the updated APUSH curriculum as well as videos for AP US Government.
  • Mr. Pate’s AP US History—These videos offer a thorough review of major periods and themes in US history. His teaching style is in the traditional lecture format.
  • AP US History Review Videos—These videos are more brief and casual, but offer good summaries. The videos can be a bit strange, though, such as the video on Free Soil, which starts off with a message about picking up after your dog…

A sampling of songs having to do with US history

This might not be useful for everyone depending on learning styles and all that kind of stuff, but It could be helpful to listen to some songs from the time periods you are studying, especially for the more recent eras (20th century) where there were many folk songs and protest songs about social issues during the time which are accessible today. Such songs, as examples of culture during that time, could theoretically be used for DBQs as outside historical evidence.

guys if you’re cramming for the apush exam tomorrow, here’s a great outline! it’s 14 pages long but that’s about as short as you’re going to get. it’s from hiphughes (an apush teacher who makes youtube videos) and he’s also doing a live 3 hour review of the course starting at 8 pm eastern. i think he’s taking questions too (idk tho) but the link is in the document!!

EDIT: here’s the link to the video, it’s just starting

Writing Tips

A great way to make a lasting impression on your DBQ and essay tomorrow is to bring in things that will surprise whoever is grading your essay. How though?Well for starters, if applicable, always bring in women’s rights, african american rights, and native american rights.

With women right’s, you should definitely include the cult of domesticity which basically says that women should be nurturers and be domesticated aka be a housewife. After the revolution this cult will turn into republican motherhood which is basically the cult of domesticity combined with how women should also educated their children on democracy and patriotism and why they should vote and thing though women lacked that right. Bring up people such as Alice Paul, Margaret Sanger (she sets up the birth control league which will later become Planned Parenthood), Susan B. Anthony, the Grimkey Sister’s, Abigail Addams and her request to her husband to remember the ladies when the writing of the Constitution was happening, authors such as Margaret Fuller and Emily Dickinson. Remember Clara Barton and her founding of the Red Cross , Jane Adams and the Hull House. Bring up organizations such as the National Women’s Christian Temperance Union, the National Council of Negro Women, don’t forget to add in organizations such as the NWSA, AWSA (which later come together as NAWSA or the National Women’s Trade Labor Union (NWTLU). Bring in how The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan sparked the feminist movement. Mention Seneca Fallsif it fits, bring in the passage of the 19th amendment and how orgs like NAWSA would campaign for suffrage by going on state by state campaigns.

For African Americans, bring up the Emancipation Proclamation and the Civil War. Bring up the 13th-15th amendments and how republicans were big supporters of it. Talk about the Great Migration during WW1, bring in people such as Ida B. Wells, Booker T. Washington, W.E.B DuBois, the creation of the NAACP. Talk about Brown v. Board of Education, Swann v. CMS, Plessy v. Ferguson, the integrated fighting units in the Vietnam War. The Freedman’s Bureau and the multiple chances of abolishing slavery in the writing of the articles of confederation, the constitution, and the bill of rights are great to bring up.

Talk about how the economienda system affected the native americans, how the reservation system sucked major ass, talk about the massacre at mystic. The events of Wounded Knee are important to discuss. Don’t forget Tippacanoe or the French and Indian War . The Dawes Severalty Act is important to discuss.

If the topic that’s at hand can in any way have these groups of people incorporated into it, then by all means write all about them. Bring in whatever other knowledge you know and feel free to add more to this post.

apush tips

throughout the year

  • remember that apush is more detail oriented than other ap histories
  • take really good notes
  • try to recognize common themes and major turning points
  • practice writing essays/dbqs/short answers a lot (your teacher should take care of this in class hopefully)
  • crash course it out

review

  • start studying two-ish months before the exam (if your class is on track, you should start studying when the teacher starts reviewing)
  • review in reverse so that you can better understand historical causality and the last thing you study will be what you learned in august/september
  • buy a box of flashcards (barron or 5 steps)
  • do lots of practice tests, at least one of which should be done in a realistic setting (at a desk, in the morning, timed, all parts of the test)
  • i really love the ap us history crash course book by larry krieger to read the last couple days before the exam because it’s got the simplified information and lots of helpful hints
  • don’t study the night before the exam – relax

general

  • know your periods (reconstruction, great depression, gilded age, etc)
  • change and continuity over time!!! (slavery >> civil rights // republican motherhood >> 1970s women’s lib)
  • don’t memorize every battle of every war just know really important ones/turning points
  • please please please use synthesis when writing essays it’s one sentence worth a full point seriously even if you think it’s a terrible synthesis WRITE IT DOWN
  • while on the topic of writing, learn how to write an apush-specific thesis it is the foundation for your entire essay/dbq
  • don’t get too scared of dbqs they literally do half the work for you all you have to do is line up the documents and add a bit of background information/a few examples
  • you can do this. study, do the work, and breathe. it’s all going to turn out fine.

IF ANYONE WANTS SOME VERY (AND I MEAN **VERY**) BRIEF NOTES ABOUT EVERY SINGLE AMERICAN PRESIDENT UP TO THIS POINT FOR THE APUSH EXAM HERE YOU GO!! TUMBLR WOULDN’T LET ME ADD MORE THAN 10 PHOTOS THOUGH SO HERE’S A LINK TO PART 2
