trying to decide if Final Fantasy XVI works better

A) As a bridge between the Ogre Saga games and Final Fantasy Tactics — representing the great cataclysm the destroyed a lot of the races and caused magic to leave the land, leading to it coming back gradually in a new form as detailed in Crimson Shroud.

or

B) Taking place some indeterminate time after the FFXII-related titles and representing the end of (most) fantasy elements in the world, leading to the modern framing era seen in Tactics Advance and Tactics A2, where "Final Fantasy" is a supposed fiction yet things like the Gran Grimoire still exist.

OR

C) (warning: craziest theory yet) XVI ignores XII and its associated games and takes place some time after FFT/VS/CS, representing the end of the age of magic and monsters. This eventually leads to the modern day framing setting of FFTA/A2, at which time Marche & co find the Gran Grimoire, and inadvertently alter history, retroactively causing the era of TA/XII/RW/TA2 to occur at an appropriate point in the past.

lol okay, so… spoilers for Final Fantasy XVI I guess?

XVI's setting shares a lot in common with the Ivalice titles. Ivalice has a few giant holes in it from an undescribed "cataclysm", which are described in FFT and XII; has some giant crystals that supply magic to the world, as seen in XII and Revenant Wings; has an ancient race from beyond that created said crystals and control things from behind the scenes, the Occuria, who were behind the events of XII in a similar way to what's going on in XVI; has a never seen "Eastern" continent/land that the Genji Gloves and other samurai/ninja-related gear is said to be from; has a blue-skinned lone being of divinity named Ultima who possesses people who both feels responsible for and hates mankind; and so on. Not to mention the name Cidolfus, which has, prior to XVI, only appeared in an Ivalice setting.

FFXVI takes place on an isolated pair of continents that the last of the these Mother Crystals rest upon, suggesting that if it does indeed share a setting with the Ivalice titles, it takes place after at least Revenant Wings, where other such giant-crystals-that-supply-magic (there called Auraliths) were taken care of. FFXVI also has to take in (another?) era of decline, as it's lacking fantasy races that permeate the FFXII era of the setting (though some were seen in Vagrant Story, so they're not completely relegated to that setting). Or at least, there's no fantasy races on The Twins. Aside from Moogles, apparently.

The ending of XVI shows a magicless age where "Final Fantasy" is but a book written by Joshua that the common folk think of as a fiction, so enough time has to have passed for history to fade into myth. Which, to be fair, doesn't take as long as one would think in a pre-technological age. Which, to me, dovetails nicely with TA and TA2's framing setting of a contemporary non-fantasy Ivalice with cars and electricity and kids who play videogames and so on. Games like "Final Fantasy". Which is why I think if we want to presume that XVI takes place in the same world, it's got to go after the XII-related games at the very least.

The particulars though… well, that's the fun of speculation :)

I heard a game reviewer say the phrase “Iblis Creatures” and this image came fully formed into my head

stop asking neil gaiman to confirm/deny things and just violently project your own issues onto the characters the way God intended

I think that 2023 is a good time for many of us, and allies in particular, to practice again the dying art of minding our own fucking business when it comes to the identities and lives of other people.

You see someone from one of your classes in a public place with a different gender presentation/expression than they typically have? Mind your own business.

You discover that one of your coworkers is in a same gender relationship, but they aren't out at work? Not your place to share that information in the workplace.

You notice that your neighbor in a red state takes a road trip across state lines with their transgender child every 3-6 months? No you fucking didn't.

You overhear students in your classroom using a different name and different pronouns for one student than you are used to using? If you live in a state hostile to trans rights, pretend that you don't know anything about this and report nothing.

You suspect that an acquaintance of yours might be gay, but they deny it when asked directly? Leave them the fuck alone.

One of your friends refuses to publicly label their sexuality? Good for them, you aren't entitled to that information anyway.

Your sibling comes out to you as questioning, but isn't comfortable sharing that with your parents yet? Keep your fucking mouth shut.

Don't out people; coming out is a personal choice not a moral obligation. Don't demand personal information about other people's sexuality or sex lives. You aren't entitled to information about anyone's gender identity, assigned gender at birth, or transition.

Bring back privacy, allow people to have control over the information that is shared about them publicly; it might save their job, their housing, their parental rights and their child's safety, or even save lives.

Diddy Kong Pilot was a cancelled sequel for Diddy Kong Racing that was planned to be released for the Game Boy Advance before being reworked into Banjo-Pilot after Rare, the developer, lost the Donkey Kong license.

In 2013, an early build of the game was leaked by one of the company's former employees. In the files of that build, remnants of a story mode can be found that include drawings of King K. Rool in an aviator outfit going on an adventure to find treasure. Here are all the drawings depicting him.
