I want to share some wisdom from my high school art teacher.

In my AP Art class, there was a girl who was just starting to experiment with mixed media. At this point she was still playing around, trying to decide what direction she wanted to go with her portfolio. So one critique day, she brought in an abstract canvas with some rhinestone highlights and painted and real peacock feathers. She loved sparkles and peacock feathers so she thought she’d try introducing them a *little*. And after everyone had given some input, the teacher gave her his advice, VERY roughly paraphrased here:

“So here’s the thing… I do not like this style. These are just elements that do not speak to me personally, but I see that you like them, and you’re doing interesting things with them.

“My biggest critique is, I only merely *dislike* this piece. I want you to make me HATE it. Go crazy with the things that you like. Don’t hold back trying to make it palatable to people like me. Because I am NEVER going to like it. And if the audience does not like it, it should drive them crazy seeing how much YOU love it.”

Her portfolio was chock full of neon colors and glitter and rhinestones and splashes of peacock feathers and it was a delight. Our teacher despised every piece lol, but she got great marks and I think even won some awards. And more importantly, she was happy and proud of the results. Because she didn’t limit herself by trying to appeal to people who were never going to enjoy what she enjoyed.

Takeaway here: be as cringe as you want. Don’t limit yourself based on other ppl’s tastes. They’re not you, and you are incredible 💕

i think what’s kind of nightmarish to see about the like endless iterations of horrible discourse about like completely meaningless shit like “are bi people allowed to say the phrase ‘i’m gay’ or is it problematic and evil” is that i dunno how everybody else felt at the time but when like this whole fuckin internet social justice thing was new my hope was that all these discussions would be like, a basis for people to go on to involve themselves more with like real life organizing and activism or whatever instead of like, the whole thing just ossifying into a permanent fixture of social media that a lot of the time consists entirely of people with extremely little life experience arguing with each other in often deeply hostile and bad faith manners solely for the sake of arguing or feeling morally superior.

like it’s just incredible to think about the amount of like strong emotional investment and anger and like righteous outrage and fury and obsession and intensity that goes into like arguments about whether or not somebody should be ostracized for calling themselves pansexual yet still saying the phrase “im gay lol” in a discord group chat at 4 AM, like the realization dawns on me that a lot of this stuff was never even intended to be even remotely related to like activism and politics and collective struggle or anything like that, it might use the language of politics but its social function is comparable to people being really into “console wars” in internet forums from 2005.

funniest thing about the “reddit migration” is that I haven’t seen a single post shitting on anyone coming from Reddit. when twitter started bleeding users everyone was firing rent-lowering posts but with redditors skittering about we’ve left the doors open and put out food bowls
