I just saw a post and someone was trying to say that racism is a mental illness, and I almost spit out my water while reading. Seeing that you and I might have similar views on things, I'm wondering what your thoughts are. As a psych major and a human being, I think it is total asinine to excuse racism. Thoughts?
uh, wow.
this kind of view really upsets me. partly because I like facts, and “racism is a mental illness” is the opposite of a fact. but mostly because it’s a part of a really harmful and false narrative that associates any negative trait or behavior with mental illness.
it reminds me of all the posts saying that Trump has narcissistic personality disorder. when someone writes that, what they’re saying is, “this person has X and Y bad traits, and that means they are a bad person, which means they have a mental illness.” it essentially says that immoral people are mentally ill. which is stigmatizing and harmful.
it’s also just straight up incorrect. any personality disorder must include significant distress or functional impairment. y’all are talking about an unbelievably rich man who has convinced threebeautiful women to marry him and have his children, and whose bigoted views have won him the presidency. he is being rewarded, not punished, for his bad traits.
my point is: just because someone is an asshole, a racist, a bigot, an abuser, or whatever does not make them mentally ill. the vice versa is true too: people with mental illness are not necessary assholes or racists or whatever. assholes and racists come in every variety. call ‘em out for what they are. don’t assign a inaccurate and harmful label.

so im at work and bagging for this lady and her little kid and the kids askin me about what its like being a big kid and all that so he goes “do you have a girlfriend? is she pretty?” and i live in a pretty liberal area and it was pretty quiet in the store so i just calmly responded “actually i have a boyfriend, but he’s fairly pretty” and the mom just kinda pauses on her phone and looks down at her son like please dont say anything bad please dont embarrass me but he just gets so fuckin excited and is like “you can do that ???? i didnt know boys were allowed to have boyfriends!!” and hes turns to his mom and is pulling at her phone trying to get her attention and is just really excited like “mom did you know that ? can i have a boyfriend instead of a girlfriend ??” and she just started laughing and was like “if you want sure” and they took their groceries and left and im just standing there like
