Something I love to read but never really explore satisfactorily in my own work is the idea of deception in monster romance. Being tricked or lured into loving something monstrous, a monster believing it can't be loved as its true self, so it must resort to disguise and trickery. A human realising very slowly, only after they have committed themselves to the romance that something isn't right, that niggling sense that they should flee being constant but also constantly overwritten by their own desire and affection. A monster that is dishonest, manipulative, desperate to be cherished so it will resort to any means necessary. A human that wants to resist the entrapment but on some primal, instinctive level, yearns to be trapped.

god this is so extra, in my defense I'm in bed sick so I had nothing better to do than write 3k of incubus porn

(CW religious trauma, parental abuse, dub con, consensual non-consent, blasphemy, virginity loss, mentions of animal death and pregnancy loss)

---

The first time the angel visited me, all he did was speak.

“Wake,” he whispered, and I did, but the darkness when I opened my eyes was the same as it had been when they were shut.

“Be not afraid.” His voice was low and silken. “I have taken your sight only to protect you – it will return once I am gone.”

I believed him, for only two things on this earth had powers like this, and he did not sound like a demon.

“You have been chosen, lamb,” he continued, his words licking at my ear like a flame, “to receive my revelations.”

Chosen? Me? “But I –”

“Do you doubt your worthiness?”

In truth, I did. There were men and women in my village much more godly than I – Mother was always reprimanding me, and beating me, for asking impertinent questions, or having sinful thoughts. Proud, she said I was, and wilful.

“There must be someone else,” I said, “someone more virtuous.”

And then the angel laughed. “Oh, child…” Then a strange sensation – like two hands rubbing over my shift – “You have many, many virtues.”

mfers will say "im against book banning in schools and libraries!" and then turn around and say ao3 needs to be censored

The people arguing to ban and/or remove content from Ao3 are completely and utterly convinced that censorship is different when they do it.

Don't usually share work stuff but I do work in climate policy and nearly every memo I write includes some variation of "government funding for this obscure but necessary area of climate mitigation research has been multiplied (sometimes by like, 1000x) under the Biden Administration" and while I know the oil permitting stuff is much splashier news there's a whole world of work that needs to be done under the surface that Biden is doing. And if he doesn't win in 2024 all that progress goes away and the climate is absolutely fucked

Like I get that it’s not eye-catching but Biden spending $6 billion on demonstration projects to decarbonize heavy industry is probably on its own the most climate-friendly thing a president has ever done

Reposting mainly because in the UK the Prime Minister has openly entered the war on climate change on the side of climate change and I need the reminder that less stupid things are happening eleswhere.

Also, the Biden administration just "paused" some LNG (liquified natural gas, aka super-cold methane) infrastructure development, which is HUGE. I cannot stress this enough. The reason global warming has accelerated so fast, suddenly, unprecedentedly? Very likely because of natural gas AKA methane production. Mostly in the US.

It is HUGE that they're working against this trend.

PLEASE for the love of the universe read anti-colonial science fiction and fantasy written from marginalized perspectives. Y’all (you know who you are) are killing me. To see people praise books about empire written exclusively by white women and then turn around and say you don’t know who Octavia Butler is or that you haven’t read any NK Jemisin or that Babel was too heavy-handed just kills me! I’m not saying you HAVE to enjoy specific books but there is such an obvious pattern here

Some of y’all love marginalized stories but you don’t give a fuck about marginalized creators and characters, and it shows. Like damn

If anyone has any recommendations give them to me please!

Gladly! The pieces on this list aren’t limited to specifically anti-colonial science fiction and fantasy, but they do center related and relevant topics, themes, etc.

  • Anything by NK Jemisin. She is the best speculative fiction writer of her generation and probably the best speculative fiction writer alive. She is easily one of the best writers working right now, across all genres. That’s not hyperbole. She deserves all the hype.
  • Anything by Octavia Butler. She needs no introduction. Her short fiction is incredible; “Bloodchild” is one of the pieces that inspired me to write.
  • An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon. Excellent. Just read it.
  • The Radiant Emperor duology by Shelley P. Chan. It broke my heart and it'll break yours.
  • Babel by RF Kuang. You’ve probably already heard of this book because Harper Voyager marketed the shit out of it and was right to do so. It’s very, very good. Kuang writes a compulsively readable story, that’s for sure.
  • The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo.
  • So Long Been Dreaming: Post-Colonial Science Fiction and Fantasy (anthology) edited by Nalo Hopkinson.
  • Dark Matter: A Century of Speculative Fiction from the African Diaspora (anthology) edited by Nalo Hopkinson.

Severely underhyped books of assorted speculative genres:

  • The Blood Trials by NE Davenport. Given the current chokehold romantasy has on the public it’s insane to me that this book hasn’t sold a billion copies.
  • The Vanished Birds by Simon Jimenez. It’ll change you.
  • The Tiger’s Daughter by K. Arsenault Rivera.
  • The Lesson by Caldwell Turnbull.

Read widely. Read diversely. People of the Caucasian persuasion need to stop getting pissy when the story doesn’t immediately center them and they don’t automatically relate to everything the character says and does and is. Just let yourself get swept in the story—even if it touches on (gasp!) racism—and maybe, just maybe, it’ll reveal something to you.

Or maybe not! Marginalized sff authors do not have to and should not have to educate their readers. But if I see one more white person complain about how Black characters are fundamentally annoying because they complain too much I’m going to fling myself into the sun

Thanks for coming to my ted talk I didn’t want to do it but here I am

[5] 'Father Duty' || Castis Vakarian

Here we have:

  • Take your kids to work day where precious little baby girl Solana (we're still polishing working on Solana and I couldn't decide whether she's younger sister or older sister — I feel like she's younger but also feel like she's older depending on the mood swings).
  • Garrus verbally and literally pointing out someone's form isn't proper because Dad taught him the proper way and Castis is just 'well, you heard my boy' — ah, yes, more delulu coming your way ♥
  • Solana is not at all happy to be there but she's the behaved one so she gets to be in daddy's holster.
  • Garrus eating off dad's spicier plate because it's 'dad's spicier plate' and he wasn't going to back down to dad saying, "You're too young for this, Garrus. This is too spicy for y—."
  • Look at the sheer determination to appease his father and his pride as a Vakarian. NOMNOMNOM LITTLE ANGEL ♥
  • Dad making copies of work related files in his omni-tool because Solana decided to play with it and did cute little doodles and blamed it on Garrus.
  • Garrus gets a time out and doesn't know why. Dad won't tell him.
