food sovereignty >>>>> absolute veganism for everyone

im not kidding when i say it makes your life 1000x easier when it comes to this subject if you just abandon the vegan vs antivegan dichotomy entirely and invest in learning about food sovereignty

for those who have never heard about it: "Food sovereignty, a term coined by members of Via Campesina in 1996, asserts that the people who produce, distribute, and consume food should control the mechanisms and policies of food production and distribution, rather than the corporations and market institutions that have come to dominate the global food system. It also encompasses the right of peoples to healthy and culturally appropriate food and their right to define their own food and agriculture systems. The phrase "culturally appropriate" signifies that the food that is available and accessible for the population should fit with the cultural background of the people consuming it."

food sovereignty is inclusive of both vegan diets and those who cannot go vegan whether it's because of chronic illness, sustenance needs or anything else

it also addresses the economic root cause of animal and land exploitation, ie who controls the means of production and whether their goals are to feed the people or expand profit margins

food sovereignty is an indigenous and peasent led movement that seeks to end the abuse of land and animals by empowering the workers who grow and harvest our food instead of greedy corporations

i highly suggest checking out via campesina's website to start learning about food sovereignty and i encourage everyone to stop investing so much time in endless arguments about veganism when we could all be doing much more useful things to organize against the big agribusiness that is harming all of us– humans, animals and the land

Just crossed path with the maths teacher who tried to bully me for having ADHD and he's wearing a sirwal on a bike and i think that's démonstration enough of how much his opinion of me should (and did) not matte

Also i transed my gender a little too hard and I don't think he recognized me

Your purpose in life is not to love yourself but to love being yourself.

If you goal is to love yourself, then your focus is directed inward toward yourself, and you end up constantly watching yourself from the outside, disconnected, trying to summon the “correct” feelings towards yourself or fashion yourself into something you can approve of.

If your goal is to love being yourself, then your focus is directed outward towards life, on living and making decisions based on what brings you pleasure and fulfillment.

Be the subject, not the object. It doesn’t matter what you think of yourself. You are experiencing life. Life is not experiencing you.

Thank you this is the first post about self love that hasn’t made me want to throw things

mutuals do this

Riiiight.

Let’s try and shame children who have no power over their families’ fortunes and are reliant on said families for their lives.

Instead of adult who spend their lives gathering wealth and refuse to use any of it.

Kindly fuck off right into the sun’s core.

This is literally the funniest comment on this post

Imagine defending rich people still as the planet is dying in front of all of our eyes bc of them

As a rich person's kid, if you told me that I would totes laugh along with you tbh

More seriously, I'm was brought up as upper middle class, but I'm usually with upper class kid, and they say the stupidest shit. I hear people complaining that they only get bread, butter and jam toasts at their scouts camp. I literally had someone tell me that their parents were emotionally abusive because they hadn't gifted them another pony for Christmas. I hear about people telling me that their holidays were lame because they only traveled by train while they visited the rest of Europe

Shit I'm trans and with the assholes my parents are i plan on abandoning my family and never actually profit off of their wealth, yet sometimes i catch myself being so uncomfortable when a friend i made outside of school is with me and they tell me something about growing up not rich and I'm horrified because I never had to fear unexpected bills or breaking something and not having it replaced for a while. They're things that I should be reminded of from time to time.

god she is so funny for this this is literally such a humiliating manifesto to put out into the world. i would rather die than admit i got big mad over people writing mean posts about me on TUMBLR enough to write a 5 billion page book about it

The underpaid disney employees on their way to evict me and my family

Avatar
leeshuh

disney literally tried to do this ages ago. please watch defunctland explain it. im losing my mind. why

I would like to let people know that is a reality for many of the underpaid Disney employees as they can’t afford housing on their salaries

So Disney has apartment buildings it buys to rent cheaply to their employees

And I’m sure you can imagine the level of control Disney has over you when they control your employment and your housing

Originally it was just for the college program employees (like me) but got expanded to being available to all employees

Now I don’t know how it is with the full time employees, but if you were a college employee and you got “termed?” (Disney loves alternative language to control their employees, see being a ‘cast member on stage’ vs an employee at work). After being termed you had 24 hours to move out

Now, guess how well that worked for 19 year olds from Ohio who have nowhere to sleep and no way to get home

I knew a guy who had two “strikes” against him (calling out of work gets points against you, 3 points get you a strike) that had been waved as he had good reasons to miss those days. He then made a comment his supervisor didn’t like so she reversed the strikes being waved and gave him the third one for his comment. He then had to call his parents at 2 am to tell them he was now homeless in Orlando. Imagine if your boss could evict you for talking back

Now imagine you’re one of the many semi retired employees trying to stay afloat through their 70s, or the many employees who are recent immigrants, or who are parents of kids, or anyone else without a lot of work or housing options

Think of the shit they’d be able to do to you if losing your job meant immediately losing housing because your boss owns your home

Think of how much leverage that gives against the unions when your workers aren’t even secure from their employer in their home, where union dues paying for you to not work can’t save you from eviction because your boss decides if you get to live there

Any fucked up thing Disney does is almost always worse for their employees, and likely tested on them first

I wonder how often this happens. A friend of mine was thinking of donating her brain because of a condition she had, but found out the research facilities had a habit of taking money donations and throwing brains in the trash instead of doing much research.

We all making jokes about Zuko working at the tea shop as firelord, and how humble he is towards his servants. But what if a diplomat from the earth kingdom shows up one day and catches Zuko in a more casual outfit while being ushered through the palace. The diplomat mentions something about how Lee must be very good at making tea if he was sent all the way to the fire nation and asks to be served during the meeting. Not one to turn down an offer Zuko obliges and disappears off into the kitchen. The diplomat sits down at the meeting table, awaiting the arrival of the firelord when his tea arrives. He pours a cup for everyone sat around the table including the firelord. The diplomat inquiries when the firelord will be joining, to which Zuko responds by sitting in the throne at the head of the table.

May I suggest: Aang is also at the meeting. While the diplomat is sputtering, Aang casually ignores him to compliment Zuko on the particularly fine blend - and they spend five minutes talking about tea, as though it’s the most natural thing in the world to talk about at a high-level diplomatic summit.

Aang could talk about whatever they wanted at important meetings. Are you gonna interrupt the Avatar???

Toph would interrupt the Avatar.

Not if the situation is funny.

btw body horror is stuff that doesnt naturally occur and is used to scare ppl, like extra eyes, animal parts on a human, a mouth opening in the stomach, not. disabled people’s bodies lmao.

This post was a plea to stop treating visibly disabled people as monstrous because of the differences their disabilities have caused. It was not an invitation for people to argue what is and is not body horror. It was a call out for dehumanization, not the horror genre.

bringing this back around for IFEW (international face equality week)!! take this time to educate yourself on disfigurement and similar things, and take the steps necessary to become a more accepting and understanding person!! disfigurement and disability is not something to be afraid of!!

There are kids to whom their mom buy their boxers, and they are kids who can take off their binder without needing to undress. Guess which category I belong to I guess

I just wanna remind everyone that Amazon's commercials are 100% propaganda. Sure, they have benefits and maternity leave. Sure, they get a minimum of 15$ an hour now. But.

But do you know how much of Amazon's warehouse workers are actually Amazon employees? Only about 60%. And that's not during the holiday season, when the number of contractors is exponentially higher.

I've worked in a distribution center. For every 30 pickers or packers, there is at least one manger. Those managers are all Amazon employees, meaning the remainder there is gonna be mostly contractors. Again, this is especially true around the holidays. When I worked there in 2017, the contractors had a three strikes rule. Call out for a shift more than three days (not consecutive, just three days any time at all) and you're fired. You have the flu? Fired. You lost your childcare? Fired. You have no transportation to work? Fired.

A truly horrifying number of warehouse employees were living out of their cars, sleeping at the truck stop across the road. A fellow EMT on duty was so incompetent that he gave a hyperglycemic man a candy bar and made him so sick he could have died. They will require their managers to 40 hours a week (over a 3-4 day period), but the second you cross into overtime territory you're made to leave the building or else. A manager once left in the middle of an active medical emergency because she was going to hit double overtime if she didn't, and she didn't want to lose her job.

Amazon is not an ethical company. They do not treat the vast majority of their employees well, not even their managers. I was an EMT on call in a distribution center and every morning a manager came in with steroid cream he needed put on his head because he was losing his hair from the stress. He wasn't even 30 yet. They do not give reasonable accommodation for disabled persons. They do not allow adequate rest times. They make every single employee clock out before they go through security upon leaving, which can take up to 20 minutes because everyone leaves at once. A Supreme Court justice literally decided that was legal--to hold employees in the building on time they aren't being paid.

Amazon is fucking bullshit. The price gouging alone should be enough to not shop with them whenever possible, but their treatment of warehouse employees is despicable. They treat the backbone of the company like worthless, replaceable drones. Fuck Amazon, fuck Bezos, eat the fucking rich.

Story time:

In middle school biology, we did an experiment. We were given yams, which we would sprout in cups of water. We then had to make hypotheses about how the yams would grow, based on descriptions of yam plants in our books, and make notes of our observations as they grew.

Here’s what was supposed to happen: we were supposed to see that the actual growth of the plant did not resemble our hypotheses. We were then supposed to figure out that these were, in fact, sweet potatoes.

What actually happened was that every single student in every single class lied in their notes so that their observations perfectly matched their hypotheses. See, everyone assumed the mismatch meant they had done something wrong in the process of growing the plant or that they had misunderstood the dichotomous key or the plant identification terminology. And, thanks to the wonders of a public school education, everyone assumed the wrong results would get us a failing grade. We were trying to pass. We didn’t want to get bitched out by the teacher. Curiosity, learning, science - that had nothing to do with why we were sitting in that classroom. So we all lied.

The teacher was furious. She tried to fail every student, but the administration stepped in and told her she wasn’t allowed to because a 100% fail rate is recognized as a failure of the teacher, not the class. It wasn’t even her fault, really, though her being a notorious hard-ass didn’t help. It was a failure of the entire educational system.

So whenever I see crap like Elizabeth Holmes’s blood test scam or pharmaceutical trials which are unable to be replicated or industry-funded research that reaches wildly unscientific conclusions, I just remember those fucking sweet potatoes. I remember that curiosity dies when people are just trying to give their superiors the “right” answers, so they can get the grade, get the job, get the paycheck. It’s not about truth when it’s about paying rent. There’s no scientific integrity if you can’t control for human desperation.
