In preparation for Soulful Creatures: Animal Mummies in Ancient Egypt, several of the carefully wrapped and mounted bundles were staged briefly in the conservation lab to check their stability.
This exhibition will present a broad selection from the Brooklyn Museum’s vast ancient animal mummy collection alongside the results of scientific examination and curatorial research. In addition to making sure the objects were structurally sound, BKM conservators helped with reviewing and documenting analysis such as x-rays, CT scans, and radiocarbon dating. The goal of this work was to understand both the wrappings and their sacred contents more thoroughly.
See these precious objects first-hand and learn all about their ritualistic purposes when the exhibition opens on September 29!
