Modern movies and shows tend to have very unbalanced mixing. Also, a common trend in modern movies is more realistic dialogue (mumbling) that is not as crisp as it was in previous eras of film making.

My audio processing isn't as fast as my visual processing, and I'm dyslexic. Between hearing things and seeing the text, I can understand what's going on. If I only have one or the other it's a lot harder.

My kid is practicing the flute and the ice maker is right behind my computer.

I've found that on days when my chronic fatigue is bad, using subtitles makes watching movies and shows less exhausting.

English is still, after all these years, not my first language.

I have found that several of the above are true, but I first started using closed captions because sometimes the accents in Doctor Who are a little more British than I can follow comfortably.

I started using closed captions in grad school, and the lounge across from the Disability Student Services office (Which had a TV set up on a table, where someone in a wheelchair could reach the controls) was also the room where people gathered to study and chat. And the captions allowed me to watch the shows I wanted without disturbing them.

in light of police across the country cracking down on pro palestine protests with brutal force, it feels like a great time to remind everyone to shut the fuck up around cops. don't make small talk, dont act friendly, don't fucking engage with them!! if you are arrested DO NOT speak without a lawyer present. protest organizers, get into contact with local pro bono lawyers who can be there for your arrested comrades. no matter what, if cops are there, shut the fuck up unless you are actively doing a protest chant. dont tell cops why you were there, dont tell them if you're affiliated with the school you may be protesting at, dont tell them if you came there with anyone, dont tell them anything!!!

Also: do not use biometric security on your phone if you take it with you to a protest. Cops are allowed to force you to unlock your phone (or hold you down and do it). Use a passcode, then refuse to unlock it.

Cops are not your friend.

Don't talk to cops.
