Guess what, guys? “Afrogate” is back. Sigh. :( But this time, the critics are taking things too far. They want Winx Club removed from Netflix — not just the “Miss Magix” episode, but the entire show. Petitions are spreading around on Tumblr and Twitter. No matter how you feel about the show and this controversy, this is an overreaction. The critics are condemning a series that’s more than 4,000…
I think I’m just going to put in my little two cents on this once again…
So I found out the other day from seeing a few tweets from @unadinoiwinx that afrogate, as we’ve all started calling it—I forget where it started from, probably from her though—that there’s apparently a bunch of people wanting Winx off of Netflix. I just saw a post on tumblr as well about a blog post that’s apparently an “official petition” to remove it, or, to use their hashtag, #takeitdown.
And they don’t mean the single episode with this issue, but the entire show. So this upsets me.
I could go on like @oblivious-prattler and countless other winxers have about how it’s not what these people think it is, or how that one minute of context in this show is being taken the wrong way and not being understood the way it was intended, but I think I’ll go for another approach. A simple request. Just two words.
Watch Aisha.
Aisha—or Layla, depending on where you grew up—is the Fairy of Liquids, an adventurous girl, tough, stubborn, powerful; the list goes on. And one of the most important things for this show is representation, with how half of the Winx are women of color. And that’s what Aisha is.
A woman of color.
Well, the Winx are technically aliens… but you know what I mean.
Aisha is designed to look like a woman of color, and not just any, really. Her appearance was originally inspired by Beyoncé, AND Aisha is a PRINCESS. How many shows from 2005 can you think of that also introduced a main character that was a POC and had royal status, or wasn’t a stereotype? Aisha is a character—the first character, actually—that comes to mind when I think about something a lot of these people against Winx for afrogate are all about. Black excellence. A powerful warrior, an elegant princess, and a beautiful and kind-hearted spirit that won’t take shit from any one. In season two when we first meet her she’s against the Specialists if only because she knows what her mission is and how to execute it, and some of them come off as chauvinistic.
So back to my request, anti-winxers. I just want you all to please, just ignore the first season if you can’t get past the Miss Magix episode. I want you to start season two, instead.
The first scene we meet Aisha, she’s in the Underrealm scaling a mountain wall to save her pixie friends. Without having transformed, and limited magic resources. And later she’s fighting the monsters there alone. And after season two, keep watching to season three, then four, and keep going until you reach the end. The show to most people in our age group has “gotten childish”, but Aisha’s passion and fire never quit. She’s grown so much from season two to season seven, and she is a wonderful character and a fantastic role model, not just for people of color but for all Winx fans.
Don’t shut down this show without giving it an actual chance. It’s been around for 12+ years, it doesn’t deserve that with everything great that’s come out of it.
No, I’m not back. I got an email saying I’d been mentioned in this post, and I wanted to pass it along.
Winx fans, we’ve got to protect this show. This isn’t about nostalgia and dubs or anything like that. This is about ignorant people making accusations and condemning a show they haven’t even watched.
The scene they’re focused on is from TWELVE YEARS AGO. This show has changed since then, and so has our culture. Even the black community has changed in regards to this very issue they’re calling the show out for!
Winx Club does NOT deserve to be cancelled or taken off Netflix over this. The critics should judge the show by how it is NOW, not by how it was over a decade ago. We need to stop them from destroying something they know nothing about.
Please reblog @inactivemermaid’s post or write your own and help save this show!
@BeMiraculousLB: #MiraculousLadybug has not been cancelled/pulled. The programming plans require continuous adjustments that will support Miraculous throughout all of 2016. Some weeks there will be new episode premieres, some weeks there will be reruns, and some weeks, Miraculous will be on rest. Nickelodeon continues to be a great partner to ZAG and Miraculous in the United States. :-)
The entire thing is due to programming block issues. Miraculous will continue to air on Nickelodeon with unspecified possible breaks between episodes. Which isn’t entirely good from prior experience but never the less, Miraculous will continue to be put in English on Nickelodeon but the blocks are to accommodate other Nick shows.
Still doesn’t justify how Nick treats girl brands.
“But the blocks are to accommodate other Nick shows”. So you mean to tell me, that whenever Winx (used to) and Miraculous are on a fudging three to six week hiatus, but Nick’s shows (Spongebob, Every Witch Way, Other Kingdom etc.) Get ONE EPISODE EVERY DAY?! No Nickelodeon. You are pure bull crap.
I don’t know why companies like Nickelodeon. I hope LoliRock and EVERY future Western magical girl show doesn’t get on that damned channel.
