funniest language thing in modern greek is that the word for baby/infant is “moro” which literally means “idiot.” like someone looked at a baby 1000 years ago and was like “this guy doesnt know shit.”

just to be clear it meant idiot BEFORE it meant baby so like, this wasnt an insult born out of comparing people to babies, it really was people looking at babies and thinking “i dont think theres a better word to describe these things than “moron”” (which “moro” is the root word for)

i just remembered this post. i think i should add onto it:

“moro mou” (my baby) is an affectionate nickname for a partner in greek, the same way “baby/babe” is in english. however this does mean that you are ostensibly calling your partner “my moron <3”

Word for today: moro

Idiot; baby; sweetheart. In that order.

listen I expected literally Nothing from the D&D movie okay, like I can't make it clear enough that I expected the most soulless money grab with a good cgi budget imaginable, I went in having already gone through every stage of grief and landed on acceptance and LISTEN

I fucking CRIED during this dumb RPG movie. it wasn't just "not terrible" it was objectively good with a clever plot and compelling characters and sincere emotional beats. this movie loves D&D so fucking much and it NAILS the "a bunch of goobers try to be cool and accidentally discover The Power Of Friendship And Also Great Violence" classic D&D party vibe. their barbarian's last name is fucking Kilgore and my entire family cried in the theater.

I hope they make twelve of these motherfuckers.

the state of tiktok skits about having a rude customer is getting out of control i just saw one from a pharmacist and the whole skit was like someone comes in and goes “you shorted me on pills” and the pharmacist goes “no we didn’t you can see on the prescription it said to give you this many” and the patient goes “well i usually get more so i’m gonna call my doctor about this” like how is that customer being unreasonable or a karen or whatever

Avatar

but the whole skit was about pain meds and we all know if someone wants more pain meds it’s bc they’re a lying addict trying to scam you and not just someone who’s confused bc their doctor made a mistake so it’s ok to post skits on tiktok portraying them as a villain for wanting the medication that was prescribed to them

Karen is quickly becoming one of those terms that's lost all meaning, like so many before it.

Like. You ask me to define "Karen" and I'd say it's the lady today who said she wanted a chicken sandwich then threw a fit when I told her we've never served chicken but could do a turkey burger, calling me stupid, insisting we've always given her chicken before, then insisting she speak with the manager (which is me).

Meanwhile, my 16 year old sister was telling me about a Karen at her work (she works in a really nice retirement home) who was a lady who asked for no sugar in her tea, was given sweet tea, and then explained she couldn't drink it because she was diabetic and it might kill her. "Like, she was such a bitch," my sister said, "She wouldn't even drink it! Told me to send it back and get her a new one!" Which, like, maybe it's because I'm old now, but if I messed up someone's drink and they had a medical condition that kept them from drinking that drink, they're not the bad guy in that situation. The proper response is to fix it, but my sister's been raised by her phone and is on TikTok all the time and thinks that "Karen" and "mild inconvenience" are the same thing.

I also see a lot of people being called "Karen" for things like telling people not to shoot at crows or feed dangerous foods to their dogs or telling you not to microwave something because it could blow up and burn the shit out of you.

Like even stuff like "hey don't microwave eggs they can explode when you touch them and since the microwave is at eye level I don't want you to be blinded and permanently disfigured by molten egg" or "stop letting your toddler ride your dog like a pony it's obviously trying to get away and I don't want your small child to be bitten by your 80 pound lab husky pitt mix"

And without fail someone is like "don't tell me what to do KAREN it's my God given right as an AMERICAN to horribly injure myself my children and any animal I see fit and if you warn me you're the problem!"

you know you're good at your job when every single person tells you "thank god you're back"

Boss makes a dollar You make a dime You read unsanitary pirate slash On company time

Look if you read fanfic on the clock and everyone is still relieved that you're back you must just be that got-dang good at your job

Avatar

Fam, some jobs are like being a firefighter. 90% of the time you're not doing anything that important, but by golly, when they need you, they need you.

Some jobs, you can fuck around for six hours a day, but you know what you're doing so well that the work you do in two hours would take somebody else ten.

Some jobs, you spend those two hours preventing other people from making mistakes that would take 100 hours to fix if you weren't there to steer them right.

So don't buy into the idea that if you're not working 480 minutes a day, you're not doing enough to get paid a day's wages. That's the capitalism talking.

You're a better employee when you keep your morale up, and sometimes you do that by reading fanfiction on the clock in between putting out your little fires.

My grandad worked nights for the railroad, and he liked to say that he got paid for what knew, not what he did. There would be nights without a single train, but someone had to be there to make sure that any train that came by was on time and on the right track. It could be so slow the guys set up a projector and watched x-rated films on the clock. OP, I think your okay.

When I found out Paramount+ was removing Star Trek: Prodigy I bought all 20 episodes of S1 from Amazon Video since that was the only way for me to watch all 20 at the time. On 6/27, I lost access to episodes 10-20. Amazon has done what they can, which isn't much.

All 20 were accessible when I paid for all 20. The full season is what I was buying. Now, I only have access to 9 of the episodes.

What is the point of buying digital content if they're just going to steal it back from you afterwards?! Is this not false advertisement?

Seems appropriate

People don’t seem to realize this. Digital purchases are great until the seller no longer has the rights to the media and suddenly its not yours anymore

Pirate and download and back up EVERYTHING. And if you don't know how, ask someone who seems like they might be able to walk you through it. It really isn't that difficult and you don't need to understand the inner workings of your computer or any fancy-schmancy technology lingo either.

if i heard that a woman aborted a fetus because prenatal screening had revealed a disability that i shared, i would simply not shame her

RIP to people who think bodily autonomy is conditional but im different

i’ve been getting a lot of comments/questions about this post. some is good, some is bad. i’ve decided not to respond individually and instead say:

  • i said what i said. i wasn’t confused about saying it.
  • if i found out a woman had aborted a fetus because she found out that fetus had a disability that i have—disabilities that i have firsthand knowledge of being painful, difficult to live with, and often resource-intensive—i would not be angry with her. i would not feel like she doesn’t think people like me should not be alive (unless she actually said so).
  • fetuses are not little potential “you”s. projecting your own anxieties onto a woman’s abortion (”i wouldn’t have wanted to be aborted” is common reasoning in plenty of pro-life circles; it’s not better here) is invasive and nonsensical.
  • bodily autonomy isn’t conditional. you don’t know a woman’s exact reason for abortion and you don’t need to. women’s rights to abortion need to be protected, even if you feel icky about some potential reasoning behind an abortion, which you aren’t even fully privy to in the first place.
  • disabled people should always be in the care of people who have the resources and desire to take care of them. insisting that disabled children be born simply to ease your own moral qualms with abortion is frankly unethical in my opinion, resources are often very slim for disabled people. not to mention our quality of life is often just lower in general. you can argue all you want in the notes about “mild” disabilities but you aren’t the arbiter of what constitutes a mild enough disability to make an abortion terrible and immoral and shame-worthy.
  • women aren’t vessels. regardless of how morally pure you feel your crusade is, they simply aren’t.
  • speaking as a disabled person, energy is literally always better spent on changing society—by increasing resources for caretakers and disabled people alike, speaking frankly about quality of life, correcting notions about what disabled people’s lives are like, punishing mistreatment of actual disabled people [not potential ones], and putting research into easing the pain/suffering of people as much as possible—than it is on getting mad about women getting abortions. and it isn’t just better spent that way, it’s just immoral to do the latter.
  • in conclusion: RIP to people who think bodily autonomy is conditional but im different.

If I believe that everyone should be able to access abortion, at any time, for any reason - and I do! - then that’s also allowing that people may have abortions for reasons I disagree with - and it is none of my fucking business, because it’s not my body.

How would that even work? How could you even enforce that? “Anyone can have an abortion EXCEPT you, because your fetus would be born with a disability”? That’s just nonsensical.

I’m disabled and I’m sick of those anti-bodily autonomy assholes using disabled people as a prop - or those same people using “disabled children” as a euphemism to mean a fetus with fetal abnormalities that are incompatible with life, as a way to prevent people from accessing abortions later in pregnancy.

RIP to people who think bodily autonomy is conditional but I’m different.

No forced pregnancy or forced birth is moral. I don’t care why the force is being applied.

You can advocate for more resources and education so more people are able to care for a disabled child

AND

support complete bodily autonomy and a person’s right to choose in all cases. Even if you personally don’t like it

You can support two things

Howdy

I'm under the weather right now, sitting up in bed, but I should be back at work tomorrow. It is heartening reading your kind notes and comments. The support for the Good Omens graphic novel is amazing.

I do feel tremendous pressure to make everyone happy, and I know that's not possible. Someone somewhere is not going to like this little detail, this creative decision, that costume. That's just the way it is, and it is 1000% even more intense because the fandom loves the story so much and they want what's best for it. And that's a good thing.

Naturally, my primary thoughts are making Neil Gaiman and the Terry Pratchett estate happy, and the chips will fall where they may elsewhere.

There are little changes I feel it is important to make, such as body language, as I need to be more expansive in a static medium like comics to convey life more than one would require in prose. So if someone is described as sitting, I am likely to have them get up and walk around.

Or not.

It depends.

Things in the show won't be in the book, because Gabriel, heaven and hell aren't depicted in the book.

But things in the book are in the graphic novel, like the Bikers of the Apocalypse, and trees growing uncontrollably, and a big pile of fish.

I sometimes feel a bit pecked at over it all, but who wouldn't.

But I also recognize I have a wonderful project to work on and I am so grateful for the enthusiasm and support.

I need to take some drugs, take a nap, and maybe I will have the energy for a little work in a couple of hours.

Take care.

From the Neil Gaiman fan page on Facebook.

This book is being self published by the Terry Pratchett estate via their company Dunmanifestin.

I am under contract to Dunmanifestin, but Neil gets say in what I do.

I hope this answers all the "Why Kickstarter?" questions.
