I sat in on a lecture that Ross Gay gave a couple of months ago and it was all about how no one ever talks about the empire of time and how the idea of time colonizes the imagination and poisons a lot of art and artists because they all want to make something that will last forever and outlive them, this was inside a larger lecture about gardening and how poetry should be more like the act of gardening, how you pour all your time and attention into it even though it won't outlast you or even outlast a cold season, but no one would ever say that making things grow was futile or useless, and then he read a poem from an old undergraduate student of his that had never been published and never would be, it was about the students mother dying of cancer, and everyone in the room was crying, and I think about that poem all the time and will probably never hear it again, even though I can only remember the way the poem moved and the last image, and the way it made me feel. It would be easy to be dismissive of these ideas when they're transmitted by a wildly respected writer whose been published widely but I found it very liberating and I really can't stop thinking about it.

american leftists seem extremely focused on anti imperialism (good) but rarely- if at all- discuss decolonization in their own fucking country, despite acknowledging that it is a settler colonial state.

im serious about this though. as an urban indian, i definitely cant speak on this as much as a rez indian could. but i know from talking to rez friends i have and from what the american indian movement has screamed for over the years that we need land we can grow on, we need clean water, we need to allow the wildlife that once lived in this land to live here again (meaning you need to listen to us before building those high speed rails you all get so hard over).

I hate those posts that are like "if you believe businesses have a right to turn people away for being gay, then you can't be upset when they turn you away for not wearing a mask. you can't have it both ways!!!" bc the kicker with that is that the speaker wants it both ways too! We want businesses to be able to turn people away for not wearing masks but not for being gay, and that is a good and right thing to want! But it is counterproductive messaging to reduce it to an issue of mere logical consistency in order to own the other guy when our own desires are just as "logically inconsistent"*

*they aren't inherently logically inconsistent because being gay and not wearing a mask during a pandemic are not similarly situated, but they have inconsistency imputed to them when they are rhetorically positioned as being similar for the purposes of owning ppl with a zingy one-liner

Rule number one of any type of messaging should be to not give up more ground than you claim — that if making a minor, banal point would require you to accept your opponent's premise/s, then it's flat out not worth it.
