DETECTIVE CONAN PEOPLE

@ibooksandfandomscazyworld

I am a detective Conan freak. FEEL THE TRUTH

THIS RIGHT HERE

You guys are dangerously close to realizing specifically what kinds of people they keep from voting and why.

Avatar

I want to drill this into everybody’s head:

  • The United States of America has the highest prison population in the world
  • Black Americans and Latin people make up the majority of this population (many of whom are non-violent offenders)
  • Federal Prisons in America require that their state keeps their prisons at a maximum occupancy at all times.
  • The 13th amendment did not entirely abolish slavery…just one form of it. It remains legal through industrial prison system

Oh and we have privatized prisons which allow companies to actually make money off of keeping people incarcerated

Avatar

Here’s what’s really perverse: prisoners, who cannot vote, still get counted in the U.S. Census. The more prisoners a county has, the more representation it gets, even though the prisoners cannot vote. See how that works? The more black and brown people they lock up, the more government resources and political representation they get. Even though those prisoners have no say and cannot vote.

If county-A has a population of 50 voters but no prisons, and county-B has a population of 50 voters and 50 prisoners, the county with the prisoners gets more government funding and more political represention. This is sometimes called “prison gerrymandering” and it is used in redistrictring.

Not so fun Fact: Southern states that reliably vote for Republicans also have the highest prison population in the United States. (source). So mass incarceration is a double whammy. It’s both a form of voter suppression and a tool to strengthen white people’s political power.

Abandoned Soviet buildings aren’t near as depressing as fast food restaurants around every corner in America

this image is depression

Most of all how placeless and contextless it is. If you live in America, you have been here. No matter where in America you live. No matter how far you run, this place will always find you, and you will always end up there.

Anything looks depressing and contextless when snapped on a cloudy day in late fall/early winter (especially after recent rain). And especially from the industrial, inorganic style of things favored in the 90s (I know others have pointed out the cars and the blockbuster).

And every corner? No, that’s a single street. One street, right off the highway, close enough for the signs to be seen. Fast food, yes, along with other things a weary traveler needs. They’ll usually have an auto parts store or two, maybe a garage. A couple competing gas stations. Definitely a Walmart or Target or grocery store nearby, as well. And some sit down franchises too. An IHOP, an Outback, a Steak’n’Shake. And maybe a little family owned diner, that thrives on regulars and passers-through.

The town will be nearby, tucked around or behind, but you won’t usually find homes in this stretch. You won’t find the local stuff. The unique, the homey, the special. Those guys will build on Main Street. They’ll build on town center. They’ll build in the areas where you go when you really want to get to know a place.

This is for passers-through. For a slice of home for all. For something you know, and can trust, and can take a small measure of comfort in. For high-schoolers with small budgets and big appetites, for busy parents with too many school events and no time to cook tonight. For the businesspeople who worked too late. And for the traveler, far from home, who simply wants a moment of rest or a moment of the familiar.

Because, yes, they are liminal spaces. They’re for travelers. People going to and from work, to and from events, to and from cities. America is big. Big and spread out and moving and living. And when you travel it, you can go hours without seeing civilization. Without seeing anything familiar. Hours on the road and away from your home and your comfort and your known.

And then you see this stretch of road off the exit. And you know you can take a moment somewhere you’re familiar with, even miles, even states, away from home, and rest. You don’t have to wander and wonder and hope they’ll have what you like. You don’t have check the menu to see what you can afford. If you have a few dollars in your pocket, even some change in the ashtray, you can get something warm, and quick, and familiar, to hold you over until you’re home again.

And people comment on how this is depressing, and unoriginal, and placeless. And I wonder if they’ve ever known that bone-deep exhaustion from a whole day driving through miles and miles of fields and mountains and trees, with not a town to be seen. For those of us who have, this sight signals an oasis of familiarity. Of simplicity. It’s a waystation.

And as someone who has often travelled far from home, both with others and on my own, I will defend these rest stops as the source of comfort to the weary traveler they are.

It’s literally impossible for you to make yourself known to everyone you meet. Some people will just get the wrong impression about you and you have to let it go.

I was walking down the street with my brother on a hot day on our way into a bookstore and I said “I hate the sun. It’s too hot. Name ONE reason we need the sun. Literally I can’t think of a single reason why we can’t just figure out a way to block it”

And a guy turned and looked at me with the most dumbfounded and horrified expression Id seen since the last time someone looked at me like that (about a week before) and then turned to the girl with him and they both looked mistified in the worst way.

They really thought I don’t know what the sun’s for.

I could’ve told them I work in environmental science but I was having a conversation with my brother.

Those two people think that’s the day they overheard probably the stupidest thing any human being has ever loudly said in a bookstore.

That’s fine.

I know I know what the sun’s for.

Spiritual/Yokai anime you may never have known about

I totally did not keep up with my plans to do a series of movie/anime recommendations. So sorry. Medical issues distracted me. But I have a lull day today, so here is a list of little known anime dealing with the spiritual or ‘demonic’ that you may not have heard about.

Rules of selection:

- An animation style that is compatible with the sometimes disturbing or spooky narrative.

- I’m sticking with the creep factor for the most part, so there wont be much comic relief. And if the show isn’t out-and-out ‘creepy’, it will at least be contemplative and serious about it’s own story.

- ‘Spiritual’ is a deliberate and broad genre title, because even though I aimed for stories that dealt with yokai and traditional Shinto lore, there isn’t much of a selection. So I did my best with some good ol’ mysteries that have the air of the supernatural.

Alright, here we go.

Red Data Girl

Red Data Girl is a beautifully animated show that follows the troubles of Izumiko Suzuhara, a girl fated to be the final, heavily protected vessel of the entity known as the Himegami. The show mostly follows the burgeoning friendship (and maybe romance) between Izumiko and her reluctant bodyguard Miyuki, along with the shadowed idea of a hierarchy of exorcists that go to this one upscale school and vie for political power. The supernatural themes showcased in this anime are relatively unique, to the point of being a little hard to follow if you look away for a moment, so don’t do that. But all of the characters are relatable, and the annoying ones get a back bone pretty quick.

Red Data Girl is an adaptation of a novel series by Noriko Ogiwara. It has been adapted into a manga as well. If you like this, I would urge you to seek out the English translation of Noriko’s other novel Dragon Sword and Wind Child (and it’s sequel). It is exquisite. Red Data Girl is comparably low-key, as Red Data Girl focuses on what happens to a 21st century school girl, and DSandWC is a high fantasy based on Japanese mythology.

Psychic Detective Yakumo

It seems to me that despite being an excellent supernatural show with enjoyable characters and fascinating plot-twists, Psychic Detective Yakumo was somehow eclipsed in the west where shows like Ghost Hunt and Ergo Proxy and what not managed to get more publicity (those are good shows too, if you are interested).

Reserved college student Yakumo Saitou was born with a red left eye that allows him to see ghosts and spirits. He uses it with the belief that if he can communicate with them and resolve any issue they may have, then the ghost or spirit can move on to the afterlife. A fellow college student named Haruka Ozawa appears one day, asking him for help to save her friend, who she believes is being possessed by a spirit. He reluctantly accepts and afterwards gets involved in other supernatural related mysteries with her helping him.

Mōryō no Hako

If you start this show and are put off by the bizarre story telling that surrounds the two high school girls at the center of this murder mystery, try not to be. After the first two episodes, once the story really picks up steam, it isn’t quite such an uncomfortable or bizarre watch.

The story brings together a war traumatized cop, a strange novelist, an eccentric detective and a brilliant bookstore owner/Onmyōji (esoteric priest) who are involved to various degrees with a prolific and incomprehensible dismemberment case.

The Twelve Kingdoms

The Twelve Kingdoms is a great coming of age adventure story that takes place in a world of Asian myth and heroic empires. The lead female protagonist Yoko has probably the best character arc I’ve ever seen in an anime. This show also has some of the greatest quotes for anybody ever that’s looking for some inspiration.

Give it a watch if you like swords and sorcery, because this is a beautified Japanese version of that classic trope. It’s more fantasy than it is supernatural since all the mythical creatures exist physically, but I’ll break some of my original parameters with this list just so I can spread the word about this under-loved anime.

Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit

Moribito, like The Twelve Kingdoms, is a fantasy adventure, but unlike the aforementioned tale, the supernatural goings-on in this story are strictly limited to their own world and rules.

Balsa, spear wielder and bodyguard, is a wandering warrior who has vowed to atone for eight deaths in her past by saving an equivalent number of lives. On her journey, she saves Prince Chagum, and is tasked with becoming his bodyguard. His own father, the emperor, has ordered his assassination. The two begin a perilous journey to ensure the survival of the prince. Balsa’s complicated past begins to come to light and they uncover Chagum’s mysterious connection to a legendary water spirit with the power to destroy the kingdom.

Great characters and a fascinating mythos. Also, it is one of those rare anime that showcase middle aged persons as the main characters.

Mokke

Mokke is a beautiful slice of life series in a similar vein as Natsume Yuujinchou and Mushishi. It follows the sisters Shizuru and Mizuki, the older of which possesses supernatural sight and the younger of which is easily possessed by all manner of strange and mysterious yokai.

The sisters are very cute and enduring and their encounters are often very touching and deep. It is a manga original, and I would recommend the manga over the anime because I think it does a better job of showing the growth and seriousness of it’s characters.

A+ (for the manga)

Karakuri Zoushi Ayatsuri Sakon

I’m willing to bet most of you have never even heard of this one. It’s from the late 1990′s and centers on a sweet and usually quiet young man who solves murders with his trusty Bunraku puppet, Ukon. It’s actually very enthralling and unique. Though it is more horror than supernatural, the ambiguous nature of Ukon provides this anime with a safe position on the list.

Really it is very good. I’d recommend it to anyone who thought they’d exhausted all of the good mystery anime out there.

Witch Hunter Robin

Witch Hunter Robin is a little remembered gem from the early 2000′s. It follows a young witch named Robin who is tasked with hunting down her fellow witches, being led to believe that many of them have gone mad due to their power. The relationships between characters are subtle, but meaningful. Most, if not all characters are likeable. It has a steampunk/gothic flavor to it, and the cases Robin and the gang solve are unique unto themselves and generally sorrowful. It is sort of episodic, but the individual cases eventually help to weave a clear picture of the linear plot line.

Unlike the aforementioned shows, Witch Hunter Robin is an anime exclusive series with no novelised origin or manga adaptation. It’s a great one for all of us that love a little paganism in our animation. It’s one of those Japanese originals that did it’s non-Japanese myth material justice.

A+

English dub: Excellent

Dantalian no Shoka

Dantalian no Shoka is an episodic anime. There really isn’t an over arching plot, aside from the rules of the story which are as follows: At some point in the past (as in thousands of years ago) a few young girls were somehow turned into mystical vessels that, when ‘unlocked’ by their keykeeper, can be used to retrieve phantom tomes (huge ass alchemical texts) in order to counteract the supernatural crimes that seem to abound in this post-WWI English setting. So aside from the weird sprinkle of near loli-ness that is the ‘opening of the vessel’ (young girl) and retrieval of the books, this story is pretty enjoyable. Huey is Dalian’s Keykeeper. Dalian is the ‘Dark Reading Princess’/gateway to the mystic library of Dantalian. They have a pleasant relationship, the poetry that is read in nearly every episode is great, the animation is good and the crimes that we see them solve are very fairy tale-esque. That is important, guys. You might be put off by the non-sense that is half the show, unless you accept before hand that you are watching a straight up fairy tale. But for me, I love that shit. And the characters are all really sweet. The crimes we see can be a bit disturbing at times, but the soft animation sort of takes away the true brutality of it.

This too, is based on a light novel series, and there is a manga as well. So if you want more once you finish the anime, you might step on over to a scanlated version of the manga and check out what other troubles our lovely leads find themselves in.

Romance is questionable in this one, but there is genuine love of some sort and since you can find any anime that gives you lolicons, I’m glad this one leaves that alone in favor of the show’s more unique aspects.

One 12 episode season + one OVA

Bonus: This one has my favourite opening song in any anime ever :)

Wolf’s Rain

It’s hard to say how Wolf’s Rain really fits into this list. There aren’t any yokai, unless you consider the wolves themselves to be that, and the setting is about as un-Japanese as one can take it. But Wolf’s Rain is a fantastic anime, rich in myth-like lore and vibrating with desolation and the strong bonds that can be forged in the hopelessness that accompanies it.

Every character in Wolf’s Rain is likable and interesting and the story has a satisfactory conclusion despite the sadness in getting there. Watch it for the beauty, the intelligence and for the music. And skip episodes 15-18 as they are completely useless recaps.

A+

30 episodes, the last 4 of which are considered to be OVAs

Terrific dub

Though this is an anime original it has a questionable manga adaptation which I do not like.

Mermaid forest

This little gem is a work of horror by the very same author as Inuyasha and Ranma ½. Though there isn’t much ‘spiritual’ about this show, the themes and atmosphere create the same appeal.

Yuta and Mana are travelling companions, forever searching for a cure to their immortal condition which was brought on by the consumption of mermaid’s flesh. Along the way the two meet many tragic characters whose pursuit for or misuse of mermaid’s flesh has turned them into monsters. We also get several flashbacks to the time before Yuta met Mana and was travelling alone.

I prefer the manga original called Mermaid Saga, but the anime is good and the English dub is well done. There were a couple older OVAs before the creation of the 13 episode Mermaid Forest anime, but I think the latter is the most well done.

A-

Hoozuki no Reitetsu

Okay, I know I said the shows would be creepy, and this totally is! It is hilarious but if you really think about all that goes on in this series it is black humor to the max.

Hoozuki no Reitetsu follows the daily exploits of Hoozuki, King Enma’s second in command, as he troubleshoots the many issues that occur in Japanese hell. (So, yeah, plenty of yokai and ogres and what-have-you)…

Oh, god, is it funny. The show is set up episodically with two distinct stories about ten minutes apiece in each 24 minute long episode. There are 13 episodes and four OVAs and no dub. (And a second season on the way! AH!)

You may need to have a greater understanding of Japanese custom and lore to totally appreciate and pick up on the hilarity that lurks in every second of this show, but even without that knowledge, i’m sure it is worth trying out.

The original manga and the anime adaptation are exactly the same, so I’d recommend the show since it’s fun to watch comedy in action.

anyways hermione is a cutthroat bitch and her demonizing divination is due to the fact that she literally #cannot with emotional forms of magic. quidditch? which requires an emotional partnership of trust with the broom? nope. divination? which requires an emotional openness and willingness to forego logical conclusion at the whims of fate? are u fuckin kidding me. patronuses? which require not just technical skill but also a deep connection with your own emotional core? uhhhhh we’ll just let harry handle that one.

movie!hermione, w/ her advanced emotional intelligence and absolute willingness to meet each and every emotional need the boys have, should have of course been good at emotional magics like divination. shes fucking superwoman. but book!hermione? who destroyed a girls face without mercy because she ratted out the DA? who erased her parents memories so she could fight in a war? who solved dumbledores’ mysteries using ancient runes, an art that is practically the math of magic? book!hermione will destroy you and she will do it armed with the cold hard facts and the cold hard facts alone. book!hermione doesn’t give a shit. instead of getting a regular pet, book!hermione was drawn to a magical cat who is self-serving and intellectual and helped her gather clues rather than serving as an emotional companion. i mean fck.

full offense but hermione is so hardcore and logic-driven and she literally could give a SHIT about ur feelings

In book 1 when their major plot puzzle is character establishing to set us up for the series, Hermione straight-up explains to Harry that she kicks butt because she has logic (which is apparently rare for wizards) and Harry kicks butt because he has emotional understanding and heart. (Ron is unconscious for this conversation and doesn’t get a speech, but presumably he kicks butt for being the only one of them with an ounce of common fucking sense.)

Hermione: High Int, average Wis, Cha dump stat. Ron: High Wis, average Cha, Int dump stat. Harry: High Cha, average Int, Wis dump stat.

There’s a REASON they’re basically unstoppable when they work together.

Alien: You’re telling me that in times of great distress humans have been known to suddenly gain the strength necessary to lift objects more than a dozen times their own weight?!

Human: Yeah, it’s called “hysterical strength” and it usually happens in life-or-death situations, like when someone gets stuck under a car or something and someone lifts the car to get them out. We can’t really test it though, ‘cause it only happens spontaneously.

Alien: Humans have the ability to tap into untold strength and power and you don’t even know how you do it?

Human: Pretty much, yeah. We think it has something to do with temporary analgesia, so we just don’t feel the pain we should when we pick up a 3000-pound car.

Alien: YOUR PAIN RESPONSE JUST SHUTS OFF?

Human: Yeah, it’s like an adrenaline thing? Do you not have that?

Alien: Fuck you and your entire species of tiny juggernauts.

SCIENCE!

Just so you guys know. Hysterical strength is basically your body not holding back and going %100 though there is a great danger of you hurting yourself or breaking something since your ignoring pain and going %100. There was a case where a kid deadlifted a car to save a sibling but, cracked 8 of his teeth during it because he was clenching his jaw so hard. So whilst you can lift a car or fight off polar bears. Your probably going to break something. Because most of the time when we are “giving our all” we are only giving a fraction of what we could give and this is because if we truly give our all we can seriously injure ourselves.

This is literally an explanation of Deku and his abilities with One For All.

Humans naturally hold back because our muscles have enough strength to rip themselves apart

STOP GIVING THE ALIENS REASONS NOT TO VISIT.

@celestial-naiad the whole one million percent smash was actually hysterical strength, according to horikoshi.

on an unrelated note, did you know that if all the muscles in your back clenched at once your spine would shatter? have fun!!

Thats a horrifying and empowering thought at the same time.

Also: when you are sufficiently electrocuted and “thrown back” what is actually happening is your muscles contracting so hard and fast you essentially fling yourself away from the dangerous thing.

This is the same stuff that stops you from biting off your own fingers and whatnot. Our brains just say ‘no, don’t,’ whenever we try to do some dumbass shit, until we reach the point where it’s either do the dumbass shit or die/watch someone else die. I think it’s really cool though that we can shut off this function for others than ourselves. It shows a lot how we truly are social creatures at our core, that we don’t just do this when it’s our own body that might die, but for others in our community as well.

Avatar

This is why a zombie would be extremely terrifying for a short period, and then neutralize itself. No fear and no pain means it could rip apart the gates to your fortress with its bare hands, but it would tear its arms or break its back in the process and never do anything very dangerous again.

This also means that anybody with a magical super-healing power would essentially get super strength out of the mix for free if they could get past the psychological limitations. That’s probably what makes vampires so strong; they don’t actually put out any more force than a normal human but they repair any damage they take in the process almost instantly.

Interviewing Tips

Recently, I conducted a job interview (on the more comfortable side of the table) with two candidates. Before walking into the room, I was pretty sure we would go with the first candidate. After the first interview, I was pretty positive we would go with the second.

Interviewing is hard. It always sucks, but interviewing well is a skill that can be learned. For those who are now - or will be in the foreseeable future - interviewing for jobs, I thought I’d put together some advice. Because when you’re in a job market where you’re competing with hundreds of equally (or even better) qualified candidates, you don’t want to lose your chance due to an easily avoidable mistake.

Here are some tips:

* It sounds obvious, but prepare for the interview. Know who you’re meeting with and what job it is you have applied for. (I had an interview once where for many hilarious-in-retrospect reasons, by the time I got to the interview, I had no idea what company they worked for, even. When they asked what I liked best about the work they did, I had no idea. Needless to say, did not get a call back. My hose abandoning ship mid-interview probably didn’t help. Like I said, hilarious in RETROSPECT.)

* Consider the appropriate attire. When in doubt, don’t go more casual than business casual. If it’s a company where everyone wears suits, you should do the same. It is better to err on the side of being a little more formal than you need to be, rather than being too casual. Too formal may seem a little stuffy; too casual can come off like you’re not taking the job or interview seriously.

* You can never predict what you’ll be asked and chances are likely you will come across at least one question you weren’t expecting in every interview. However, there are some questions that are pretty common, so you should know what you’ll answer if they’re asked, before you even walk into the room. Questions like: - What are your skills? - What are your strengths and weaknesses? - Talk about a challenge/problem you’ve faced at work/school and how you’ve overcome it. - How do you work in a group? - Where do you see yourself in five years? - Why do you want to work here? - Why are you leaving your former position? - What kind of management style do you work best under? - How do you deal with difficult people/situations/deadlines at work? - Do you prefer solving a problem by yourself or as part of a team?

That is by no means a comprehensive list. However, I’ve interviewed dozens if not hundreds of times in my life and I’ve rarely if ever had an interview where at least three of those questions didn’t come up. You don’t want to be in a position where an interviewer asks why you want to work there or what your skills are and your answer is “I don’t know.” It is the fastest way to not be asked back. Believe me.

* About your former job…I really cannot stress this point enough. I don’t care if your current/former boss stole your lover and kicked your dog. When you get the job, you can share war stories around the water cooler. DO NOT TRASH TALK YOUR CURRENT OR FORMER JOB/BOSS AT YOUR JOB INTERVIEW FOR A NEW JOB! In fact, any question you get asked that could be negative, find a way to put a positive spin on it as much as possible. You don’t want your interviewer to walk out of the room wondering why you and your boss don’t get along. You want them thinking about the positives you bring to the table.

* This may take practice, but try to bring the answers you give around to the job or company. “What is the most fun think about my current job? Well, I really enjoy doing this thing and what I would REALLY love about being able to do this thing for THIS company is that it would give me the chance to…”

* Ask questions. Ask questions. ASK QUESTIONS. At least one. Write down 5-6 questions before the interview - some specific about the job, some that you can throw to the interviewer at the end of all your job-related questions are answered during the interview. Some questions to consider: - What would you say are the challenges of this position / what would you say people in this position have struggled with in the past? - What do you find most fulfilling / challenging about working for this company? - Does this company engage in any mentorship of new employees (dependent on job)? - How do you see the person in this position helping you most in your job in future?

Again, you don’t want to be in a position where you are asked what questions you have at the end of the interview and you say “none.” Even if you’ve asked questions during the interview, ask something at the end! Particularly if the bulk of your interview is with one person and the last of it is with someone else or several new people. They didn’t hear your brilliant and insightful questions you asked of the one person! They just hear you say you don’t have any and that seems like you are so disinterested. (As a bonus, several questions listed above can still be asked at the end of new people, even if you asked them of the original interviewer!)

I’m sure there are other tips, but these are good to bear in mind. I will say to remember to be enthusiastic - and a lot of the points above are meant to show your enthusiasm for the job. As an interviewer, it doesn’t matter how qualified and brilliant and nice and overall great you are. If you come off like you don’t really care about the job and have just applied because it’s there, even if this job is in reality your every dream come true, you’re probably not going to come off like the best candidate.

Good luck!

Okay but for anyone who legit wants to know how to calculate it correctly:

The elbow joint on average rests a couple inches higher than the navel, so if you measure how long the distance is from the middle of the shoulder to that point then you have the length of the upper and fore arms!

So if anyone’s wondering about legs too, the simplest rule of thumb is that the length from the top of the leg to the knee is equal to the distance between the top of the leg and the bottom of the pectorals:

And I wanna stress that when i say “top of the leg” i’m not talking about the crotch (please don’t flag me tumblr it’s an anatomical term) i’m talking about the point where the femur connects to the pelvis, which is higher up on the hips:

It’s easier to see what I’m talking about in this photo of a man squatting:

So yeah if you use that measurement when using this technique you should get fairly realistically proportioned legs:

But remember! messing with proportions is an important and fun part of character design! Know the rules first so you can then break them however you please!

You know what? This actually isn’t funny at all because this really does happen. Baby boomers can’t afford to retire; that’s a big part of why millennials can’t find jobs in their fields. And if they lose their jobs (which can mean a variety of things, including their companies finding an excuse to fire them so they don’t have to pay anything for their retirement, which happened to my uncle and 5 people he worked with over one year), they aren’t as desirable because they’re retirement-age. The world has changed a lot since they got jobs they thought were supposed to be secure, and now their old strategies that used to work for finding a job don’t work anymore and they don’t know what does work. So a lot are desperate; I recently talked to a woman who had to be in at least her mid-60s who was begging on a street corner because she was replaced by a younger person and lost her job of 18 years, and it’s not the first time I’ve heard a story like that. A lot of people who were never rich to begin with lost a lot in the 2008 financial crisis and never fully recovered. Baby boomers didn’t all just magically become financially secure as they got older.

This generation war bullshit is 100% manufactured to keep our anger misdirected. It’s not baby boomers screwing over millennials. It’s rich capitalists of every living generation screwing over baby boomers, their parents, gen x-ers, millennials, and gen z-ers all at once and all in different ways. And if we collectively realize that we’re not enemies and that we actually have a common cause with common enemies, it’ll be really bad for the people doing this to us, which is why they’re pushing the generation war thing so hard.

^ wisdom on Tumblr. That’s rare.

  2. Characters who just freaking lose it when someone is found captured, dead, dying, or gone, and the black rage that comes over them when they find out who’s responsible
  3. A character gently pushing or nudging another character behind them for protection
  4. Characters who threaten in a whisper (PLEASE)
  5. A character going deathly still when they ask, “Who hurt you?” or “Who did this?”
  6. A character angling themselves in front of another character when things get tense or uncomfortable, stepping between them and harms way
  7. Characters who shelter another character with their body, pressing them down, asking if they’re okay while they’re the one bleeding, taking shots
  8. Characters who catch the arm or waist of another character who starts to stumble, unwilling to let go (maybe urging them to rest, sleep, lean on them, or lay down)
  9. Characters who knock someone out of the way just before a fatal blow hits (maybe taking the blow or dying instead)
  10. A character who keeps an eye on another character’s whereabouts when entering dangerous territory, purposely staying near them “just in case”
  11. Characters who notice another character’s absence and are knocked sideways by a stab of fear, panic, suspicion, or foreboding, and the worried/uneasy facial expressions they’re unable or unwilling to hide (bonus if they go after them and find them hurt/unconscious/drugged/ill/running away/bewitched).
  12. Characters overcome with fear, dismay, and affection when they see another character asleep beside them— shockingly vulnerable and oh so completely defenseless— and how because of that, they become all the more protective, determined to keep them safe (as if moved emotionally by the other character’s trust in them)
  13. When a character wakes and feels their teammate pressed against them- that sudden urge to nestle deeper into the safety and shelter of their hold, to erase the gap between them, to soak in their warmth- and the subtle shift in feelings from friendly affection to something far more passionate.
  14. When a character checks in on another character sleeping to make sure they’re okay, struck dumb by how innocent they look (bonus if they reach out to brush the hairs on their head out of the way, or stay up watching over them, or decide to lay down beside them, resisting the urge to touch or pull them close)
  15. Characters who try to act normal, fighting to hide the agony of their injuries or the lightheadedness resulting from blood loss or a fever, only being found out when their lips let loose a low moan or cry (maybe a facial grimace or groan)— the urgency, rage, and fear that overcomes the character who hears (maybe forcing them to lay down while gently trying to examine them/ pressing down here and there/ going back and forth between cursing at them and trying to shush them)
  16. A character who stops at nothing to rescue another, even if it means teaming up with the enemy, or even becoming one
  17. Sick and feverish characters feeling a touch on their brow, seeing another character’s deepened frown, the crease of worry between their eyebrows (how they gently urge them to sleep and rest— telling them not to worry because they were here)
  18. Caregivers becoming attentive to every drop and swallow the sick character takes, encouraging them gently, never letting on how worried they are
  19. Sick characters who stir when they feel a small pressure against their wrist, then a voice saying, “Shhh, go back to sleep,” while laying a cool hand on their brow. They lean into the touch. They might have heard a laugh. A sigh- a breath.
  20. Characters who clutch at their stomach, overcome with nausea- heaving- then vomiting- feeling careful hands hold back their hair, rub slow, soothing motions down their back, making small hushing sounds (bonus if the sick character collapses against the other one suddenly, feeling arms wrap around them, then the brush of fingers against the forehead, feeling)
  21. Half conscious characters dimly aware of someone calling their name. The sensation of rising and then the tug of someone guiding limp arms around that someone’s neck
  22. Just, being carried, being held (legs give out, weak, illness, injury, fatigue, fear), or being able to carry someone, to hold someone safe in your arms, to cradle them close
  23. Characters forced to hold down another character during a painful medical or first aid treatment while enduring the screams and cries of their teammate, knowing that if they don’t force them through it, they’ll die— knowing they’ll be hated
  24. Likewise, characters required to be held down while desperately trying to get away, thrashing, hating the other character, not understanding, heart begging them to stop, “Please, no more, no more!” And the other character is just like, “Soon, I promise; It’ll be over soon,” or “Shhh, hold on; we’re almost done,” or “Take my hand- look at me. I’ve got you.”
  25. A character insisting they stay near another character when they bathe, fearing that they’ll fall unconscious/asleep and drown (bonus if they actually do fall unconscious, and the other character — too upset to blush— rushes in (maybe to scoop them out, wrap a towel around them, carry them to bed, or to shake them awake, holding their face)
  26. When a character sees cuts and bruises on another character (possible abuse or self harm) and go still, maybe asking, “How long?” “How can I help?” or saying, “Please, no more,” or “Talk to me,” or even, “I’m not leaving you until I know you’re safe” or “Whatever you’re hiding, please tell me.” For abuse: “Who did this to you?” “How did I not know?” “This ends now,” “You’re staying with me,” “I’m not leaving your side,” “Please, don’t face them alone” “Its not safe-”
  27. Characters who silence another character’s screams, cries, or moans of pain with a kiss (maybe unexpected, or because that other character couldn’t stand to listen anymore, or because they want to distract them from the pain by giving them pleasure).
  28. Characters waking up in someone else’s bed, either dressed in someone elses’s clothes or completely without them, bandaged and sore
  29. A character who can’t stop blushing after walking in on someone changing or bathing
  30. Characters who bite their lips and blush when they catch another character glancing at their lips (and the ache of want that throbs in that other character on seeing them blush)
  31. Characters wrists held above the head while someone straddles them, fingers roaming, eyes waiting, lips devouring— savoring their moans, watching their gasps
  32. Characters pushed up against the wall with a knee between their legs
  33. The first brush of lips, either tender, teasing, gentle, or painful, passionate, and full of uncontrolled desire
  34. Tongues that brush another’s lips, either requesting entry or demanding it
  35. The gentle nip of teeth on a character’s skin and the resulting shiver of bumps along a character’s exposed flesh, the rush of white hot bliss tingling up and down their whole being, fingers digging into flesh
  36. The first touch- the gasp that escapes, the unintelligible sounds, the hiss of delight, the plea for more, the sharp inhale (sometimes the vain struggle to hide while the other character, delighted, takes control)
  37. That moment when a character, in ecstasy, moans or screams, and the other character places their mouth over theirs to quiet them, devouring every vibration of noise as if it were the most delectable fruit on earth; as if it were the first drops of rain in a century of drought
  38. Characters who stay up all night after a heated argument with another character, only to grab and catch them before they stumble over and hit the ground in the morning
  39. Characters who forgo sleep due to worry and fear for another’s safety, taking a break only when absolutely necessary
  40. A character’s screams being hushed or soothed away by a heartless, cruel character (maybe because they have a soft spot for that one character or feel guilty for causing their screams in the first place)
  41. When a character subconsciously pulls themself closer to another character seen shivering or shuddering, taking off their own jacket and putting it on the character despite their protest, grabs a blanket for them without being asked, pays closer attention
  42. Characters just being noticed by another character— the subtle changes, like: when their voice sounds tight trying to conceal pain, or how their hand suddenly shakes, or how little they’ve eaten/rested, or how angry they suddenly get/how argumentative they’ve become
  43. Characters who toss and turn in sleep, unable to wake up until another character grabs them, calling their name, pulling them close, rubbing their back, their arms, their hair- reassuring them over and over that they’re safe/home/free
  44. Wrist grabs. PERIOD. Maybe to stop a character from walking away, to yank them out of harms way, to pull them behind them, or to convey the type emotions only touch can translate, or even as a warning to stay close
  45. Enemies who rescue each other all the time, saying how annoying they are when really they’re just annoyed with themselves for how fearful/emotional they became (or how that other character makes them)
  46. Characters who couldn’t care less until someone important to them is threatened- then all bets are off, hell is breaking lose, forgiveness will have no say, and may god have mercy on that poor character’s soul
  47. When a female character starts their period and are crippled with the pain of a tearing/ripping uterus (because honestly, some have it worse than others) and another character tries to make the pain lessen by rubbing their back, lulling them to sleep, using powers to take pain away
  48. Characters rolling sleeves up to their forearms (maybe when things get serious/sticky/desperate). Also characters with long hair who only tie it back when things get rough, tricky, or bleak. I can see a character’s mouth drop open when they catch sight of another character- maybe the most unexpected one- pull back their hair before taking a stance to fight or defend (bonus if that character before was considered nonessential)
  49. Funny characters who become dead serious when necessary (like when someone threatens them or someone they care for)- and oh, if they aren’t the most badass character after all, like holy crap
  50. Characters who feel like a nobody finding out they’re a somebody
  51. The most insignificant character turning out to be the most significant
  52. The weakest character turning out to be the strongest
  53. The evilest character turning out to be the most heroic
  54. Villainous characters coming to the hero’s defense (and vice versa)
  55. I especially love it when the enemy is the one who heals a hurt character, maybe performing an emergency procedure like inflating a collapsed lung, holding pressure on a bleeding wound, cutting open someone for an emergent operation, bracing another character’s neck, injecting someone with a drug to knock them out or ease their pain (maybe even saying something like, “Tell anyone about this, and I’ll undo all the work I’ve done.”
  56. Cowards becoming brave
  57. Brave characters acknowledging their fears
  58. Hard characters becoming soft
  59. Soft characters becoming hard, especially to fight and defend, rising to the occasion
  60. Side characters who turn out to be main characters
  61. Nonessential characters turning out to be the most essential
  62. Pompous, prideful characters humbled by circumstance, forced to acknowledge their limitations
  63. Worthless characters discovering their worth
  64. Also, words like “Trust me,” “Stay close,” “Dont go far,” “Squeeze/Take/Hold my hand,” “Stay behind me,” “Get down!” “Sleep now,” “Just rest,” “Stop fighting me,” “It’s for your own good,” “Dont make me do this,” “Try. See what happens,” “Are you alright?” “Shh, I’m here,” “Close your eyes,” “you’re going to be okay,” “I’m here,” “I won’t let go,” “Look at me,” “Back off,” “take one more step-” “You wouldn’t dare,” “I’ll never forgive you,” “please, don’t look,” “Let me take a look,” “Deep breath- good,” “Hold still,” “Don’t move,” “I’ve got you,” “You’re safe,” “Lean on me,” “Rest on my shoulder,” “Lay down,”

every time i look at the mystery gang i have this like visceral feeling that someone is missing. but nobody ever is. who are they. what happened to them

logically i know this is them. these are the only people in the mystery gang. fred, daphne, velma, shaggy, and scooby. thats the 5 of them. but something deep within my lizard brain is telling me theres a 6th member that has been, for unknown reasons, banished from this timeline and our collective memory as a species
