Mark Waid's Fantastic Four Manifesto (+ individual character breakdowns)

So I was lucky enough to get a hardcopy of Mark Waid's Fantastic Four with all of the behind-the-scenes material, including his thought processes behind what makes the team (and each individual character) tick--essentially the "director's cut" of his F4 run. For any F4 fans' consideration, here are scans of what he had to say (sorry for bad quality):

biggest protection from internet brain poisoning is remembering the idea “are people making up a guy and then getting really mad at that made up guy?”. sometimes you gotta just take a step back and go is this this an actual issue with actual discourse or is it just something like four people on tiktok are saying? By getting mad at this do I sound like new stations talking about a “new teen drug craze” that 100% is not a thing?

A couple of other tips, not just for internet brainrot but for brain poison in general:

  1. If It’s an actual Dude™, are you getting mad at The Actual Dude™ or getting mad at a Made Up Supervillain Version of the Dude who is really easy to get really mad at? Sometimes you’ve got to take a step back, pull out your Hanlon’s Razor and reality-check whether you’re making a monster out of a moron. Infuriating ≠ evil.
  2. Are you letting yourself be enraged by something that is, when put in perspective, only Worthy of Mild Annoyance™? If you’re starting to sound like a callout post when you talk/think about it then maybe it’s time to cool the jets.
  3. What can you do about it? Sometimes it’s cathartic to let yourself be mad for a bit, but if you’re regularly getting Über-mad over something then you should consider what you can personally do to fix the Thing™. If there isn’t any practical action you can take then…
  4. Why are you allowing this thing to upset you? Initial feelings may be beyond your control but dwelling on them is something you have power over, so why are you giving this Dude™ or Thing™ that you don’t like power over you?
  5. Who’s actually winning if you allow this Dude™/Thing™ a rent-free all-access pass to occupy your time and brain space? Because it doesn’t sound like it’s you. I guarantee that who/whatever you’re mad at, the person(s) responsible have spent far less time thinking about you personally than you have thinking about them.
  6. Who’s benefiting from you being mad? Sometimes it’s literally no-one (not even you). In which case, why not let it go. And sometimes the outrage is being manufactured to further profit/ engagement/a political cause. In which case you should really let it go.

Sometimes it’s not A Thing™ at all. And sometimes The Thing™ really isn’t worth that much of your time.

Don’t give it that power.

Natural Readers is a robotic-reading app, but it's robot voices are designed to sound natural (and they're pretty damn good). There's 20 minutes for free a day, but their subscription cost is super low too for unlimited reading.

In love with the idea of social media in a superhero vigilante universe. Imagine you've grappled with the ethics and morality of interfering with criminal acts and operating on limited information and the possibility of bringing danger to the innocent and the ultimate futility of the criminal justice system and you come out the other side still determined to do what you do and then you read a tweet that says "I used to steal cars for the thrill of it but then one night Power Guy showed up and pinned me to a wall and it was the hottest thing that's ever happened. Realized I'm onto dudes, joined fetlife, found a great Dom, three years on the straight and narrow, thanks king"

How would you recover

Denji is an incredible protagonist for one simple reason:

He is SO respectful.

He's a horny touch starved teenage boy. He's a pervert, he thinks about sex and girls all the time. His entire goal in life at one point was to touch some boobs.

And yet never, EVER, has Denji violated anyone's consent. Ever.

He's never peeped on anyone. Never groped anyone against their will. Never took pictures or even really gawked at anyone. He's had sexual thoughts about almost every woman he's met, sure, but he never acted on it without some form of consent.

The most he's done is make deals with various girls about doing various things with them ... Thing is, it was usually offered to him BY the girls.

Power offered him to let him touch her chest if he helped - and when he did, Denji did not even bring it up again until she did. He didn't demand she uphold her side of the deal nor even really mentioned it - she could've just let it pass and he wouldn't say a word.

Himeno offered to kiss him if they made it out of the hotel. Again, Denji didn't bring it up until she did, though he was considerably enthusiastic about it.

Makima offered him 'anything', and Denji decided to ask for sex - however he checked and double checked if that would, in fact, be okay to ask. (And he didn't even end up asking for it).

He's a genuinely believeable teenage boy, he's gonna be horny, he's gonna think about sex, but he's also a NICE teenage boy, and he has no desire to make anyone uncomfortable.

And the author doesn't see sexual assault as a hahah funny !!!

Denji is proof that you can write a likable pervert character.

All you have to do is make them respectful.

"Where has all the genuine self-expression gone? Now what used to be authentic subculture is turned into a performance of Aesthetic!" so many posts exclaim, usually concluding that the problem is Capitalism.

I don't disagree entirely, but. The problem is that y'all are so deathly fucking afraid of things Cringe, Weird, and Uncool that anything unmarketable, subversive, or oddball enough to be "genuine subculture" is gross and unacceptable to you.

People wish to see "genuine self expression" that is not a performance or a commodity.

Very well then. I assume you're appreciating and celebrating the dress, style and behavior of somewhat shabby, weird outcasts who firmly refuse to make themselves palatable to you?

I think some of you are forgetting what "subculture" means. If it makes everybody around you think you are cool and look nice, that's missing the point a little bit. That's just...culture!

When people express themselves in a way that is not a performance to appeal to others...

...it is actually very likely that they will...not appeal to you.

"Why can't people be unapologetically themselves, in a way that is of course never "cringy" or too weird or too ugly or uncool? Why can't we have self-expression without performance, in a way that is not boring to me and that doesn't weird me out?"

Do you see the problem?

There are still robust, thriving subcultures full of unique fashion and artistic expression...

"Ah, but you see, that one is personally unappealing to me!"

That's the Point, you fools!

I see how people talk about non-binary youths with hair dyed in funny colors. But there is such a young person of indeterminate gender I see sometimes on my college campus with "Trans Liberation Now!" and a bunch of other symbols and slogans hand-painted on their jacket, and they are a million times more "Punk" than anyone with simply piercings and spiky chokers

I was thinking about the incredibly cruel phenomenon of taking photos of strangers without consent and uploading them to websites so others can mock them, in the vein of "People of Walmart" and other such things, and when looking it up, I was disturbed to see how many of them are just 1) a fat person is in public (wow!) or 2) a (perceived) man is being obviously gender non-conforming

they are just existing. probably at a more advanced level than you.

Louder, for the folks in back...

"There is no escape. You can't be a vagabond and an artist and still be a solid citizen, a wholesome, upstanding man. You want to get drunk, so you have to accept the hangover. You say yes to the sunlight and pure fantasies, so you have to say yes to the filth and the nausea. Everything is within you, gold and mud, happiness and pain, the laughter of childhood and the apprehension of death. Say yes to everything, shirk nothing. Don't try to lie to yourself. You are not a solid citizen. You are not a Greek. You are not harmonious, or the master of yourself. You are a bird in the storm. Let it storm! Let it drive you! How much have you lied! A thousand times, even in your poems and books, you have played the harmonious man, the wise man, the happy, the enlightened man. In the same way, men attacking in war have played heroes, while their bowels twitched. My God, what a poor ape, what a fencer in the mirror man is- particularly the artist- particularly myself!"

Love goth culture but not really loving this prevalent shift into distinct gender presentation that's developed as its become accepted in society. Or the... I guess gentrification is the wrong word.

Like. You remember goths with huge ratty hair and KISS makeup and men in heels and corsets and women in huge shapeless sweaters till you couldn't tell who was under what? Remember when the clothes were hand-shredded from the thrift store for five dollars and some spit?

My first black lipstick was eyeliner. What's this Women Get Crop Tops Only For $60 crap. What's this Being Goth Too Expensive shit. Girl draw ur nails on with sharpie and embrace damnation wtfff

Alt fashion being gentrified (which is the right word, you nailed it) is the most bullshit thing. My forebears didn't thrift/shoplift leather and jeans and hold their clothes together with pins and dye their hair together at whoever's house had a sink sprayer just so modern punks could lament the cost of a good battle jacket and ripped pair of off-the-rack jeans like! Girl!! Rip them yourself!! Throw box dye in your hair and leave it on for an hour before rinsing in the sink!! Keep your jeans for so long they tear THEN pin that shit together!! The entire point was that we didn't contribute to the capitalist machine by buying new things!!

Cheap, shitty, and now!!

Lost Fic #125

1. I am looking for a fic I read like 2 years ago. It had a very oblivious Aziraphale, a pining and horny Crowley and a date at an ice cream parlor. There was a scene were two man at a neighbouring table talked lewdly about Aziraphale, which made Crowley jealous. Also, at the end Crowley comes untouched in his jeans. I think because he fell into Aziraphale’s lap and he tried to wriggle away to escape. Does someone remember this fic? I was certain I bookmarked it, but I cannot find it. Help, please? - @mxster-jocale

2. Hello!! I’ve been looking for a fic where Crowley wants to stay close to Aziraphale but doesn’t want to crowd him, so he’s secretly relaxing outside in a little unused patio/garden connected to the bookshop. He’d stretch out his wings and relax in the sun, and one time he fell asleep and Aziraphale noticed him there. Aziraphale decided to clean the patio area up so it’s nicer for Crowley, but Crowley assumes this means his secret hiding place has been taken and is very hurt about not being able to go back. I’ve been looking for this fic for a while… I’d really appreciate any help! Thanks so much! - @unuora

3. Hello, it’s me again, back looking for another fic!  This time I can’t remember which archive it’s even on, but it has to do with Crowley adorning Aziraphale with gold jewelry, including (ahem!) little golden nipple clamps shaped like flowers. (Sorry for typing that phrase just now.)  He also wraps some wisps of silk around him (yes, Az is, at least mostly, naked in this one.)  Any ideas on this one?  Again, sorry for the smutty phrases. - @xendria

4. Hi! Love this blog thank you so much for everything that you do for all of us in this fandom 💖 I’m looking for a fic that’s hard to find I’m sorry 😭 All I remember is that it’s explicit pwp of Crowley f*cking Zira at his flat (he’s quite dom & rough in this) and one of his plants fell over, smashed its pot cause it was trying to get an eyeful so Crowley f*cked Zira where they could see them. He said something like “You want to see my angel?” to the plants beforehand lol. Please help 🙏🏼 - anon

5. Hi!! I’m looking for a fic I read a while back it’s pre-canon and involves aziraphale performing a temptationIt was a pretty short fic, not sure if it was a standalone one shot or part of a series of one shots. It featured aziraphale in a bar talking to some mob guys who were being rude about crowley not being there before crowley saunters in like this dude should be treated with equal respect to me. And the mob guys think they are like gay husbands running a criminal empire. I’ve looked at so many mafia fics on ao3 but i cant find it. its definitely not a human au and i remember aziraphale being pretty sauve and bamf while talking to the mob guys but not really any other details. Help! - @killerkittens22

If you know any of these fics please include the number in your reply! Thank you :)

Actually yknow what. WTNV should be considered revolutionary and significant gay media that played an important role in the growth of gay representation in media especially in podcasts. When people talk about important gay media in the early 2000s I want wtnv to be one of the ones people talk about. No if ands or buts about it.

Actually I cant shut up about this. In 2012, people did not even think about putting gay representation in popular media. Gay representation wasn’t considered profitable yet. Gay marriage would not be legalized for another three years. The Legend of Korra, a show that fought to the death to have their main lead hold hands with another woman, just released their first episode earlier that spring. Steven Universe, a show well known for its gay representation, including having the first gay proposal + marriage on a kids cartoon tv show, would begin a year later in 2013, but wouldn’t show their gay representation hand until 2015 with the episode Jail Break. The Adventure Zone, a podcast currently well known for it LGBTQ+ representation, wouldn’t begin until 2014, and didn’t show their hand until 2015. In my young queer experience, representation was covert, secretive, only implied or dead.

and then in the summer of 2012, wtnv introduced itself to the world, proclaimed its main character gay in the first episode, and played it gay (pun intended) for years. Being gay wasn’t a trope, or a goof, it was normal. Cecil Gershwin Palmer was just a canon, gay character who fell in love and stayed in love and was happy. and that was that.

if we talk about revolutionary queer media, we talk about Welcome to Nightvale. No exceptions.

I think it’s really important Cecil Baldwin credit for this. I’m not saying Fink and Cranor and later Dylan Marron have nothing to do with it, because of course they do. But Cecil being gay was not something the writers intended. Because initially, Carlos was not intended to be a love interest for Cecil. He was just meant to be a character that showed up occasionally to be a tongue-in-cheek goof on scientist characters in shows like Fringe or the X-Files. But Cecil Baldwin made the decision to make his character utterly in love with Carlos, because he was gay, and wanted his character to be as well.

For those who don’t know Cecil Baldwin is HIV+, and he’s openly discussed his struggle with it. This is a large part of why his playing a man who is openly gay and sexually active is also really important. The importance I think of having LGBT people playing LGBT people really shines through with both Cecil and Dylan’s characters. They can be authentic, they can be a source of hope and representation. Behind the scenes, Night Vale is just as diverse as the show itself. Cecil Baldwin’s pretty incredible and it’s worth it to read what he’s had to say on WTNV if you have the time.

Oliver then proceeded to detail how with $50 and knowledge of the law he was able to successfully apply online to create a debt buying company named “Central Asset Recovery Professionals,” or as Oliver put it, “CARP” named after “a bottom-feeding fish.”

After setting up a rudimentary website for CARP, the satirical, but still real company was offered a $15 million package of medical debt for $60,000.

Oliver explained that the debt was out of statute, which means it is the kind of debt that a collector can only continue to collect, but not sue the debtor for.

Then, instead of chasing down the 9,000 debtors in the debt package as a normal collection agency would, Oliver decided to stage the largest one-time giveaway in television history and work with the nonprofit RIP Medical Debt to forgive the $15 million with no consequences for the debtors.

Okay but now I know what I want to do of I get rich?

You dont have to be rich to do a bit of this actually

RIP Medical Debt is a charity (and therefore takes donations). They buy the rights to medical debt and then forgive them. So far they’ve forgiven over 1B in medical debt.

So a little ray of hope for someone out there today.

Donating $10 buys $1,000 of medical debt. This is real, it works, and we’ve done it ourselves. You can too.

My hypothesis is that in like 10 years gen z is gonna have a big cult boom the way the boomers did in the 70s

It’s already happening on tik tok. There’s a fun new thing going round that’s citing common symptoms of depression and anxiety as signs you’re about to have your awakening and that you are actually an alien and the reason you don’t feel right is because you’re home sick for your own galaxy. So that’s fun.

Avatar

agreed, and i don’t mean this in a “haha gen z is so dumb they’re gonna join a tiktok cult lmao” i mean that conditions are perfect for the formation of cults right now.

  • high unemployment and a lot of underpaying, pointless jobs = people are looking for things to do with their life, a purpose
  • skyrocketing cost of living = most young people will not be able to live on their own, meaning some will end up in a group living situation with people interested in recruiting them
  • it’s a time of great cultural and political upheaval, nothing feels real, people are desperate for meaning and human connection. cults promise that
  • there is a new wave of acceptance and understanding for ways of life outside the norm, which is great! …except for when cult leaders tell you abusive and controlling practices are just their culture, their religion, their lifestyle, their beliefs, their tradition, and if you disrespect it you are the problem
  • social media influencers have already shown us how easy it is to build a cult of personality and attract people from anywhere in the world who are interested in the exact brand you are selling
  • spirtuality is having a boom, as are things like astrology, crystals, tarot, meditation, energy… those things aren’t bad on their own but they are often used as tools of cult spaces
  • wellness. i think a lot of people are already in wellness cults. you can make people do a lot of things in the name of “wellness” and a big factor of maintaining a cult is keeping members in a state of decreased cognition….. like say, with regular fasting
  • i think people are just unaware in general of how cults function, especially because the satanic panic was a big stupid false alarm that convinced the youths that dungeons and dragons or doom were gateways to cults, which are scary evil child murdering, satan-worshipping gangs. people don’t know how to spot them in real life.

as a cultic abuse survivor with a half-decade of academic research on how these groups work, here are some quality, public-friendly educational resources to help you learn what high control groups look like, how they work, and the methods they use to influence, draw in, and control/coerce literally anyone.

education about this subject is SO importanthigh control environments and their methods for influencing and controlling people often go totally unnoticed unless you’ve learned about them, and there’s a long history of mainstream misinformation on what thought reform and cults are, what they look like, and how they work. there’s also a huge misconception that “no way that could be me!” when unfortunately, because of how high control influence works, it’s possible for anyone to get drawn into a high control group or relationship without realizing that’s what it actually is.

Cults/High Control Groups and Influence 101:

  • BITE Model by Steven Hassan: criteria for identifying undue influence and high control groups/cults
  • “On Destructive Groups” section of BITE Model Analysis’ Resources page. The collection of links here are all to quality, highly respected references and resources (including videos) on Cult and High Control Group 101 information.
  • A Little Bit Culty podcast. This podcast is hosted by former NXIVM members Sarah and Nippy, who are now cult education and survivor healing advocates. Episode 2 (titled “Cults 101″ with guest Steven Hassan, creator of the BITE model) introduces what cults are, and why humans are universally vulnerable to cult abuse.
  • “Is Trump a Cult Leader? A Scientific Perspective” by Telltale. This video has a catchy title, but the creator does a great job on 1) knowing his stuff, and 2) explaining what’s required to be a cult, and what does/doesn’t qualify as a cult. The video also has really interesting insight/analysis on the current conspiracy theory cult movements we have today (QAnon, flat earthers, anti-vaxxers). The channel is a good source on both those subjects, as well as groups like the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

TV Series/Films (Bit More In-Depth):

  • Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath (Emmy award-winning TV series, it’s on US Netflix now). Really digs into the specifics of Scientology, but they do a great job portraying to the general public how cults operate, and how even a destructive cult can recruit people, cover up abuses, evade the law, and keep members within the group.
  • Seduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult (TV Series, available on Amazon Prime)
  • The Last Stop: The True Story of the Elan School (Warning: All of the TWs. Seriously.) Film on the Troubled Teen Industry, aka what happened when the War on Drugs combined with the 1960s anti-drug cult Synanon and LGAT seminars to create a still-active billion dollar industry of cult-based institutional child abuse in the name of teen rehabilitation. There is actual footage, it is deeply upsetting. Use the trailer to gauge your limits. Spoiler: fuck Nancy Reagan.
  • If you can’t watch the Last Stop, or even before you do, watch the video “The Elan School: Death by Misinformation” (it has its own bullet point later, too). It’s shorter, and the creator does well in giving you information from The Last Stop in a less harrowing/triggering delivery format. The video highlights the cult history of the US rehab and residential treatment industries. Also, once again, fuck Nancy Reagan.

Wellness/Self-Help Cults, including Corporate Cult Seminars/Workshops:

  • “What is the Landmark Forum?” by iiluminaughtii. A 101 on the cult corporate seminar industry. Landmark is one of the most well-known examples of a corporate seminar/workshop cult.
  • The channel above goes over a *lot* of the self-help/wellness industry cult groups/businesses, including MLMs. I’d genre her videos as true crime, but the research is really solid, the presentation is respectful, and there’s a good balance of education and entertainment.
  • Also check out Lifespring and Large-Group Awareness Training (LGAT) seminars. These are 1000% endemic, and yes, they’re high control groups. Their seminar methods are all various implementations of abusive high control tactics. Not good :(

Cult Origins of and Ongoing Destructive Cult Presence in the Modern US Drug Rehabilitation, Residential Treatment, and Troubled Teen Industries (including the origins of anti-LGBTQ conversion therapy camps):

Some More Podcasts!:

This list seems really long, but I actually cut a lot out. Happy to field asks if that’s helpfulthese links are meant to be easy-access for a general audience, but there are many more *really* fantastic resources besides these ones I’ve mentioned above :)

Books That Will Ruin Your Life

(trigger warnings under the cut)

  • A Little Life, by Hanya Yanagihara

This book, which is about 800 pages long, is one of the best pieces of literature I have ever read. It follows four friends after they move to New York City and pursue their goals, but most of the story focuses on one of the men: Jude St. Francis, who has a mysterious past that has wrecked him emotionally and physically. But despite the darkness of the subject matter (and it gets DARK) the acts of love and kindness and friendship from the people in Jude’s life will bring you to tears. It’s a gorgeous study of trauma, human relationships, and the marriage of joy and pain that inevitably comes with living. I read it two months ago and have thought about it every day since. It’s one of those books you want everyone to read and no one to read. (DEFINITELY check out the trigger warnings for this one.)

  • The Traitor Baru Cormorant, by Seth Dickinson

This book is a sprawling political fantasy, packed with detail and diversity and some of the best, most complex worldbuilding I’ve ever seen. Baru grows up under the shadow of imperialism and eventually joins a rebellion to break free of the empire that has begun to take over the world. She’s also a lesbian, which is forbidden in the new empire, but against herself is drawn to the enigmatic Duchess Tain Hu. There are devastating twists, loves, and heartbreaks that will break your heart along with Baru’s. To say anything else would be a spoiler, but if you like complex, morally ambiguous fantasy, check this one out.

  • As Meat Loves Salt, by Maria McCan

This book follows a man named Jacob as he slowly falls in love with a fellow soldier during the seventeenth century English Revolution. After the war, they attempt to establish a utopian farming commune and keep their relationship together. This book is a really interesting foray into 17th century England, but it is ultimately a dark, passionate tale of obsession and vindication that will leave you as sick with the actions of the protagonist as he is with himself.

  • The People in the Trees, by Hanya Yanagihara

This book is written as a memoir of a disgraced scientist, who discovers a hidden tribe in a small Pacific island that he believes holds the key to a longer (and even immortal) life. You almost forget that the events of the book are fiction and not a real memoir–everything described seems meticulously researched and vividly real. As always, Yanagihara’s writing is gorgeous, absorbing, and well-paced. It’s a haunting tale of how science, hubris, and greed can lead to someone’s personal downfall, as well as colonialism and cultural genocide.

  • The Goldfinch, by Donna Tartt

You might have already heard of this one, but I had to put it on the list anyway! After a traumatic accident kills Theo Decker’s mother, his life is thrown into turbulence and eventual crime, all stemming from a stolen painting. The story is tense, beautifully written, and will make you root for yet another morally gray narrator. For fans of dark thrillers, art history, homoerotic friendship, and/or coming-of-age stories, this one is for you.

  • Daytripper, by Fàbio Moon and Gabriel Bà

Although Daytripper is a graphic novel, it deserves a spot on this list. It follows Bràs, a Brazilian writer, and his journey through specific turning points in his life, each represented as a “death.” The art is gorgeous and the story flows impeccably, capturing the beautiful mundanities and joys of life. This book will leave you touched, inspired, and deeply affected.

  • The Vintner’s Luck, by Elizabeth Knox

After a vintner saves his life, an angel named Xas visits him every year for a single night. As the vintner grows, so does their relationship, just like a fine vintage. It’s difficult to say too much about the plot without spoiling the story, but I can say that this book explores the nuances of human relationships and the love we feel for each other, as well as the hate and fear that can pervade those relationships.

  • Beloved, by Toni Morrison

Toni Morrison is one of the greatest American novelists and Beloved is my favorite of her works. The book follows Sethe, an ex-slave, and her daughter Denver as they reckon with a ghost from Sethe’s past that begins to haunt them more literally than metaphorically. The story is both captivating and difficult to read, but Morrison’s writing is gorgeous and the characters come to life on the page. It superbly explores the depth of trauma and motherhood, as well as depicting the horrors of slavery in a way that doesn’t feel cartoonish or exploitative.

  • Everything I Never Told You, by Celeste Ng

Celeste Ng’s work has gotten a lot of hype recently, and for good reason. This book follows a family after the middle child, Lydia, drowns. We see the buildup to Lydia’s death and its brutal aftermath, as relationships are challenged within the family. It’s a brilliant look at familial dysfunction, generational curses, and interracial marriage in 1970s America, and a deeply haunting portrayal of how these issues can tear apart a family.

I made a thing! I was thinking about this for a few days - because I realized that when I was young, I was also frustrated about being given the same advice over and over - without really knowing what it meant!!

Here’s 5 techniques which I have done before which have helped me grow as an artist, which are good for 5-minute warmups or just straight up challenges for your sketchbook!

Obviously, these are not the ONLY techniques - they’re just the ones I find most fun! And maybe they’re not the most ‘correct’ ones out there, but it’s better than another comic about practicing more, right?

Good luck to everyone on their drawings!
