Did You Know That Not Every Villain Needs A Redemption Arc Sometimes People Are Just Bad

Often Characters Commit Irredeemable Atrocities And Should Rightfully Be Vilified And Not Every Show Is Avatar The Last Airbender

For Clarification I Am Using ATLA As An Example Of A Well Executed And Deserving Redemption Arc (Zuko) But Even ATLA Knew Which Villains Shouldn’t Get One Because It Would Be Undeserved Or Remove The Potential For A Satisfying Conclusion Or Just Simply Wouldn’t Make Sense (Ozai) And A Lot Of Villains In Other Pieces Of Media Objectively Fall Into The Ozai Category But Are Treated Like Zukos By The Fanbase And It Simply Doesn’t Fucking Work That Way Sorry For The Weird Format Anyone In This Thread Chew Bubblegum

to be honest there has never been a fictional character i’ve actually wanted to date. like. i want them to date each other. i don’t want myself as a person to be involved in this scenario whatsoever. what would i add to this narratively? what’s my thematic purpose in the narrative? immersion breaking.

“Who is she when, for once, no one is looking?”

- I Kissed Shara Wheeler by Casey McQuiston

This book goes on sale tomorrow, and all I can say is that Casey is three for three on books that make me roll with laughter, choke up, and surge with hope. Unlike RWRB and OLS, Shara Wheeler is a YA novel, but it never underestimates its reader, delivering a plot that makes you just about as obsessed as Chloe is with the hunt for the missing prom queen, Shara. This story tackles religious conservativism, gender/sexual identity, the red state/blue state divide, among other themes, but the theme that spoke most to me was about truly seeing people as they are, as opposed to through the filter we unwittingly apply through a combination of social conditioning and our own hidden wounds.

For that reason, I painted Chloe seeing Shara through a looking glass. <3

I can’t recommend this one enough y’all. Grown-up readers: You will love it too! (I sure did!)

PS: Easter eggs abound….👀

i am shook to my goddamn CORE. THIS IS THE FUNNIEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE

peak LGBT ally is robert pattinson and taylor lautner kissing each other so that kristen stewart didn’t have to be straight live on TV

OKAY BUT LOOK AT HER FACE! LOOK AT HOW HAPPY SHE IS THAT HES NOT MAKING HER GO THROUGH WITH WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT

The movies might have sucked, but the actors have redeeming qualities

every single thing robert pattinson ever does is intentionally genetically engineered to make stephenie meyer’s mormon blood boil hot enough for her to feel the constant neverending pain he experienced having to make and promote her movies for all those years. this is more than lgbt allyship. this is revenge.

PSA Regarding Hateful Anons

Tumblr recently made it a requirement for you to be logged in to send asks anonymously. If you receive a hateful ask, don’t publish it - report it to Tumblr. It can be traced back to the user that sent it and with enough reports that person’s account will be suspended.

Share to raise awareness but also to make the clowns who think this behaviour is acceptable think twice before acting brave behind the guise of invisibility.

i don’t know what’s cooler tbh:

  • Demon horns being broken halos from when they were angels.
  • Demons willingly grow their own halos, but never complete the circle to symbolize their rebellion against heaven’s strict order.

In addition to the second one, angels are GIVEN their halos rather than earning them. Demons like Lucifer rebelled for freedom and individuality, thus demon horns all look different compared to an angel’s boring halo.

Horns are useful tools, but if you join them into a circle they become useless badges of authority.

And the thing about wearing a badge is that you become a symbol of someone else. You’re not you, you’re an extension of the entity whose authority you’re borrowing. You can’t be yourself until you ditch it

Here’s a visual representation of angels and demons.

I figure that as angels, their “horns” would glow when connected to become traditional halos. However, this blinds the angel with heavenly light, making the angel rely on God’s guidance.

Angels who break their halos become demons, and willingly grow their horns in obscure shapes so it won’t connect back into a halo. Because the halo no longer blinds them, demons can finally see but can no longer communicate with God for guidance – the light they once gave to heaven now belongs to them, hence demons being proficient with fire allowing them to see in the dark.

Extra notes on horns & halos:

Circular horns (Halos) are smooth and easy for God to “grab” like a chain.

Jagged horns are sharp to the touch and can pierce God.

Crucial notes I forgot to add:

  • The only way angels can break their own halos is through strong, direct, hard force; rebellious angels willingly fell from heaven, breaking their halos upon hitting our world’s surface. That’s why demons are called “fallen angels”.
  • The only thing that can hurt God and other angels is another angel, so the shattered remains of a demon’s old halo would be reformed into tridents and pitchforks commonly associated with the devil.
  • Regretful demons wishing to commune with God again would either try to grow their horns back into a halo, or clasp their hands in prayer to form a circle with their own body mimicking a halo. It would faintly work. These demons would become the first priests, and spread the practice to humans.

Now imagine the demonic equivalent of braces. Put on the horns instead of the teeth, to encourage the horns to grow apart.

i'm AWARE this is a stupid hill to die on, but like. trope vs theme vs cliché vs motif vs archetype MATTERS. it matters to Me and i will die on this hill no matter how much others decide it's pointless. words mean things

trope: 1) the use of figurative language for artistic effect; includes allegories, analogies, hyperbole, & metaphors, among others. 2) commonly reoccurring literary devices, motifs, or clichés. Includes things like the medieval fantasy setting, the Dark Lord, enemies-to-lovers, and the Chosen One.

theme: the reoccurring idea or subject in a work of art. Death, life, rebirth, change, love, what it means to be human, the definition of family, the effects of war, etc.

cliché: an element of an artistic work that has been overused to the point of losing its original meaning or effect, even becoming annoying or irritating. (Most clichés are tropes but not all tropes are clichés.)

motif: a distinctive repeating feature or idea, such as the green light in The Great Gatsby. May overlap with tropes and is often used to further explore the theme.

archetype: a constantly-recurring symbol or motif; it refers to the recurrence of characters or ideas sharing similar traits throughout various, seemingly unrelated cases in classic storytelling. E.g. rags to riches, the wise old mentor. Again may overlap with tropes, clichés, and motifs, but they're not the exact same thing.

don’t talk so loudly, or so often. you talk too much. give other people a chance to speak. your voice shouldn’t be the only one heard. it’s not cooperating when you’re just ordering everyone else around. hear other ideas. listen to them speak. shut your mouth for once in your life.

be yourself. don’t close yourself up inside of you. let it out. breathe. speak. you do not have a responsibility to the world to be quiet for the sake of their comfort. you have thoughts & opinions & ideas and you must speak them aloud because nobody else will. do not silence yourself for the sake of everyone else. who cares what they think of you?

you cannot live your life alone. you must live with other people. you must learn to make yourself part of the world. you live in the world. you are of the world. you cannot live in defiance of the world. shape yourself so that you do not cut everyone else on your rough edges. smooth yourself out so that you can slide through life with ease. do not push others away for the sake of it. you are one part of a whole. be sensible and be somebody people want to spend time with.

you can find people to like you, whoever you are. anyone who doesn’t like you for yourself isn’t worth it. let your voice be heard.

your voice is too fucking loud.

one fun thing about being a teacher in march 2023 is that chess is a literal epidemic among teens. we are starting to have meetings about how we can STOP teenagers from playing too much chess which is like if we were trying to figure out how to stop them from reading for fun. When i was in high school five years ago chess was nerd shit only but now it is transcending every social and language barrier and is absolutely rampant. kids aren’t on their phone texting in class anymore it’s ONLY chess.com. kids are playing chess on their phones while playing chess in real life. this is still better than tiktok because at least the kids are developing an attention span from this

the worst part of this is that they’re on chess dot com instead of getting an education. but the BEST part of this is watching high schoolers develop the weirdest goddamn strategies I’ve ever seen. One of my students invented something he calls the “evil advisor gambit” where he gets a third person to give out constant terrible advice to both teams hoping that his opponent falls for it straight-up or that his opponent thinks HE fell for it and will act accordingly thus worsening their own strategy. he has won every game he has been able to pull off a coordinated evil advisor gambit in. this is chess innovation never before seen in its 700 years on earth
