Ok but people can seriously look at Bones' speech to Spock and hear him say "All these things you'll never know, simply because the word 'love' isn't written into your book" and not think Spock is aro???
And also people can look at Spock going to Bones about Jim acting weird because of a girl, and Bones saying "Has it occurred to you that he might simply like the girl?" and Spock saying "It occurred to me. I dismissed it." and Bones going "You would" and not think Spock is aro????
And also people can really look at the spores scene where Spock falls to the ground in agony and says "No, I can't, please don't" and the girl he's with is like "It shouldn't hurt, not like this! It didn't hurt us!" and Spock replies "I am not like you!"...
...and only after this excruciating drugging does he say, shocked, "I can love you!" and not think Spock is aro???????
And also people can look at Spock being with that cave lady in pre-reform-Vulcan time and in that exact same environment be filled with shame and say "Please pay no attention, I am not myself," "What is wrong with me?!" and "I have lost myself" and not see that he's only interested in her because he isn't himself and his whole state of being has been fundamentally altered???? Because he's aro??????
And also people can REALLY look at Spock not picking up that the Companion is in love with Zephram Cochrane until Bones and Kirk fill him in, and him then saying "Though I do not completely understand the emotion, it obviously exists" and NOT THINK SPOCK IS ARO????
And also people can really look at Spock during S1E4 (Naked Time) and see how when
- Christine confesses to him and holds his hands he looks genuinely horrified, immediately tries to pull away, and can't say anything except to apologize, and
- How when he's talking with Jim, he mentions he couldn't tell his mother he loved her (doesn't mention anyone else), and Jim says "Love...you're better off without it, and I'm better off without mine" implying that Jim loves someone (the Enterprise) but Spock does not
...and NOT THINK SPOCK IS ARO????
And also for some non-TV pieces of evidence (@noromanceplease figure you'd like to be tagged!):
- The novelization of TOS Season 2 Episode Return to Tomorrow
- This TOS-era comic:
- This excerpt from a TOS novel--a constant aro mood
Also the sheer amount of descriptions, in both TV and extended canon, of Spock and Jim's relationship that just scream QPR is another super compelling insight, might add some of those. But just. How is all this not aro??? How can you look at these and not think Spock is aro???????
Further insights from Leonard Nimoy himself (in his book I Am Spock) and Season 3 producer Freddy Feiberger (in a quotation from William Shatner's Star Trek Memories):
Falling in love is so out of character for Spock that, per Nimoy himself, it represents an erosion of his character, is on par with him braying like a donkey, and is only remotely understandable if Spock is under some influence that makes him completely different than he would normally be. In fact, Spock falling in love without those mitigating circumstances contradicts everything Leonard knew about Spock and "violat[es] the character's basic premise."
And D.C. Fontana, legendary Star Trek writer (both shows and books) agrees (also in Star Trek Memories):
They could only "get away" with having Spock "finally be able" to feel love by fundamentally altering his natural state. Considering all this, can we please agree that Spock is aro?????
Even Jim recognizes this--here's an excerpt from The Autobiography of James T. Kirk:
So Jim himself recognizes that Spock and romance do not mix--aka, SPOCK IS ARO!!
Some further evidence from Black Fire and Star Trek Vanguard: Harbinger:
Is that last not such an aro line??? Well that makes sense because Spock is aro!
