40yo Romani man was murdered by the Hungarian police last month (December 22nd, 2024)
WE STAND BY OUR POLICE! in bold caps, was the social media response of the local police chief to calls for an independent investigation after the death of a 40-year-old Romani man following a struggle with arresting officers in east-central Hungary.
As reported in 444.hu, a police officer can be heard shouting “Stop, you motherfucker!” in a video of the incident, which shows the police pursuing, grappling with, and handcuffing the man, who can be heard shouting “I’m sick, I can’t bear it”, to which the police shout “give me your hand”. The man then lost consciousness, and neither the police officers nor the paramedics who arrived nine minutes later were able to resuscitate him. The video footage broadcast on national TV was heavily edited by the police.
The man, who died while being arrested on 22 December, was named as József Zsákai, from the town of Zagyvarékos, in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County. The police chase and arrest operation was just down to the fact that officers knew József Zsákai was driving without a valid licence.
On 8 January, the police issued a statement claiming that the man died during a lawful operation. Following a vehicle pursuit which ended in a collision, and the driver’s attempt to flee, “The police caught up with him several hundred meters after he ran between parked vehicles to elude his pursuers and fell. The man, who was still resisting, was handcuffed using physical force.”
According to the statement, the prosecutor's office was notified and launched an internal investigation which concluded that the police acted lawfully, and that an emergency autopsy confirmed “that the man's death was not caused by police action, especially unnecessary violence."
“Why did my brother have to die because he didn’t have a driving licence?”
Relatives dispute the police account, and told TV reporters that the police used excessive force and believed that the man was severely beaten, "kicked, sat on, squeezed the air out of him and shocked with a taser", traces of which they say remained on the man's head.
The police claimed the family’s accusations were based on a video of the incident which “was obviously edited and does not allow for a full assessment of the case”; and fully rejected “accusatory statements that question the legality of the measure, the professionalism and impartiality of the official procedure without good reason.”
In a Facebook video, József Zsákai’s sister Edit blamed the police for her brother's death, and claimed that when they caught him between two cars and brought him to the ground, despite him being compliant and begging them not to hurt him as he was suffocating, one officer continued to strike him kneeling on him, while his female partner repeatedly tased him. She claimed they only got off József when he was already dead and asked “Why did my brother have to die because he didn’t have a driving licence?”
The family have filed a complaint, and want an external investigation and an independent expert opinion on the cause of death, because the internal investigation merely stated that death was due to heart failure. This call was echoed by Roma civil organisations, which echoed the shock and anger felt by the local Romani community. In a statement issued on 4 January, the Méltóságot a Romáknak Mozgalom (Dignity for Roma Movement) called for a public investigation:
“Considering the history of racially driven assaults on Roma, the movement urges a fair and thorough investigation to uphold confidence in justice and harmonious coexistence. They also seek the suspension of the officers involved throughout the investigation to avoid additional local tensions.”
I’m noticing an increase in new fic writers on AO3 who…uh…mayy not know how to format their fics correctly..so here is a quick and VERY important tip
Using a random fic of mine as example..
The left example: ✅✅✅
The right example: ❌❌❌
Idk how many times I’ve read a good fic summary and been so excited to read before clicking on it and being met with an ugly wall of text. When I see a huge text brick with zero full line breaks my eyes blur and I just siiiigh bc either I click out immediately or I grin and bear it…it’s insufferable!
If a new character speaks, you need a line break. If you notice a paragraph is becoming too large, go ahead and make a line break and/or maybe reconfigure the paragraph to flow better. I’m not a pro writer or even a huge fic writer but…please…ty…
This is a good thing to keep in mind! It is often and unfortunate that a really good fic doesn’t get love because its formatting makes it too difficult to read!
I think I figured out why this happens!
AO3's posting form has two modes: Rich Text and HTML. the vast majority of people write in Rich Text editors, aka any normal word processing software (MS Word, Google Docs, Apple Pages, what have you). but when you first open it, the posting form opens in HTML view. if you paste formatted text into HTML view, it erases every piece of formatting, including paragraph spacing.
this is an easy fix. when you go to post your fic, make sure the posting form looks like this:
not like this:
and please spread the word! this is an important piece of computer literacy that nobody is teaching to the new generations and they deserve to know
Oh, if you're posting by copying from tumblr and pasting to AO3, use Rich Text. It'll keep the paragraph spacing. If you don't, you get the jammed up version.
Just want to add, if you post in HTML you can still go in there and add line breaks/paragraph breaks.
Sometimes I have to adjust the breaks in rich text, too. Point is you don't have to leave a wall of text as-is. You can fix that before posting. Please do!
im sure someone already made a post about it but i came across a ublock origin add-on that blacklists around 950 AI websites and disables AI overview ☝️ so u can be free from seeing AI in your search

She's not a good person, but with or without the presence of an enabler, a predator is still a fucking predator. Without a predator, then the enabler has nothing to enable.
Some idiot in the notes is comparing a human predator to a fucking dog.

Let’s talk about everybody’s favourite socialisation scapegoat: mothers. People often confuse the idea that mothers do most of the childcare with ‘mothers do most of the socialisation’, which isn’t true, at least not in the way most people think it is.
Many mothers consciously reinforce patriarchal ideals, but this is not the only way that we learn patriarchy. We observe and internalise our mother’s place in the world, how men treat her, what work she has to take on and what she doesn’t, we learn what to expect from our mothers vs our fathers and match up what we know of them to society and vice versa. Pretty much all of us will realise our mother doesn’t hold the most power and we will also be conditioned to expect more from her ourselves (the classic example is the father hurts the child and the child is angrier with the mother for not protecting them)
So even if a mother is a passionate feminist or even just a non-feminist who firmly believes in men respecting women, this doesn’t necessarily socialise her children to respect women. Her children will recognise her lack of power instead. This is why it is not true that if mothers just did a better job in our society patriarchy would be over, the very role that mothers occupy in patriarchy mean a lot of the socialisation is done already by the structure.
this is very clear through a study i read that found that male abusers aren’t more likely to become abusers if they’re abused in the home by their mothers, but they are more likely to become abusers if they witness their MOTHER being abused. so, many male abusers learn their ways from how the men in their lives treat the women they’re closest to, not through having the woman they’re closest to abuse them.
men are also more likely to hold sexist beliefs if they have sisters, showing that witnessing the treatment of girls and women and how they as boys and men benefit, is the core responsibility for how they turn out into horrible adults. they see what they benefit from and think it’s what’s natural and normal and use it.
PEOPLE’S MARCH???? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?? THIS IS WHY THE LEFT STAYS LOSING BYE
women are straight up not allowed to focus on advocating against the specific form of oppression they face as women. When women attempt to band together on this shared issue, we are instantly demonized for not also talking about 8,500 other societal issues instead, then shoved aside and steamrolled.
That said, there are plenty of other sources to share about this that are not blatant hyper-conservative pro-trump nonsense mongers. I initially reblogged without reading the whole article and wowie. Talk about missing the point.
