Not that there's anything wrong with having something wrong with you
Thinking about this documentary I saw about this Christian missionaries that got kidnapped in Mindanao by a Moro group and at first they tried to preach to their captors but that didn’t work and after awhile they were like “heyy uh doesnt the Koran say to treat People of the Book well and stuff? We count as that” and the captors were like “huh?” and a little while later they came in with a Koran and we’re like “oh yeah it does say that!” and gave them a mattress to sleep on instead of just the floor and removed some of their shackles
Now that I'm working in the anthropology department and we're teaching human evolution, I wonder how many anthropologists looking for ancient hominids must have found modern human remains instead. You didn't find a fossil of human evolution... but you did find the remains of a person. Isn't that meaningful, too? And also... they are so similar to us, that it's not unlikely that so many remains that could have been key to understanding human evolution have been misidentified as just humans (which raises the question "weren't they just human" but I digress)
There's an interesting story about Sahelanthropus (a hominid similar to chimpanzees who walked upright about 6 millions ago in modern Chad). When it was discovered, the remains presented wear and tear from wind and sun exposure, which was wierd because they were found buried. It was then the anthropologist noticed it was buried with its head facing towards Mecca, like in proper Muslim burial practice. Muslim nomads must have found the remains of Sahelanthropus, they would have thought it was a human, and decided to give it a proper burial, even if they didn't know its story or who was it life, they thought those bones deserved to rest.
Alt history where the cold war ends in 1981, because AT&T launches a coup of the United States with the assistance of the USSR.
Seeing the breakup coming as their long antitrust trial comes to an end, the bell system secretly coordinates with the soviets for military support, and takes over the US. They officially end the Truman doctrine, to allow the Soviet union to bring socialism to the world. AT&T doesn't care who runs the world, so long as they're allowed to provide phone service to it.
Governor Ronald Reagan never takes office after winning the 1980 election. The 40th president of the US is instead Chairman Charles L. Brown, formerly CEO of AT&T.
The United States of Bell is begun.
If a space alien visited earth, or if we built a superintelligent computer of some sort, or if perhaps we brought back a really smart guy from the dead, then they would of course agree with my political beliefs

What's going on here, Gallagher? How does this work?
i am! obsessed! with this book from the late ming dynasty about scams to watch out for (esp. if you are a traveling merchant). this guy is like, there ARE immortals who can survive without food but you WILL NOT encounter them because they live alone in the mountains and don't talk to anyone. if a monk comes to your house and claims to not need to eat, it's probably because he's secretly eating human fetuses, or something. eunuchs are invariably corrupt and the court system is useless. however, do NOT try to bribe anyone for a better SAT result for your idiot failson; this never works. nuns WILL try to seduce your wife into cheating on you. if your idiot failson does really badly on the SAT, make sure to have his father's remains buried somewhere with A+ fengshui; this is Guaranteed to work (unless your wife is cheating on you).
if your idiot failson does really badly on the SAT, make sure to have his father's remains
so your own remains? assuming this book is aimed at men
sorry, i phrased this badly (and it's been bothering me), but 1) there IS advice for women too (although it's mostly stuff like "only make friends with integrity or you might get seduced by a nun 😳"), 2) iirc you might also need to move his grandfather's remains/other male line relatives to the place with good fengshui, and 3) i regret to inform you that this particular piece of advice was accompanied by a story about a woman who fucked A MONKEY THAT SHE WAS KEEPING AS A PET, got impregnated by it, and gave birth to a son with adhd, which she passed off as her husband's. and she had to bury the monkey's corpse next to her husband's in the place with good fengshui in order to get this kid to pass the SAT. and this worked, somehow
From the LEGO expert-level Detective's Office, this wanted poster features a description fitting every minifig.
As Cliff recounts, the “landing party had assumed that Hindu temples were Christian churches, they had misconstrued the Brahmins’ invocation of a local deity as veneration of the Virgin Mary and they had decided the Hindu figures on the temple walls were outlandish Christian saints.” True, “the temples were also crammed with animal gods and sacred phalluses,” but these surely reflected exotic local Christian practices. What mattered to the Portuguese was that these long-lost Indian Christians permitted images in their “churches.” Thus, whatever their idiosyncrasies, they could not be Muslims. The Portuguese joined in the chants and invocations with gusto. When the Hindu priests chanted “Krishna,” the Portuguese heard it as “Christ.”

As part of the temple endowment ceremony each Mormon receives a new name which they are instructed that they "should always remember and which (they) must keep sacred and never reveal, except at a certain place..." (footage)
Since January 1, 1965 each Mormon who goes through the temple on any given day receives the exact same new name, regardless of which temple they attend across the globe.
These names are given to the temple workers each day during a special prayer meeting. Every temple has a set of placards with male and female names on them, in addition to a small number. The number is the day of the month. The choice of which new name a temple patron receives depends only on their gender and the day of the month.
The only confirmed exception to this rule occurs when the new name of the day coincides with the person's actual first given name, in which case he/she receives the replacement name of Adam/Eve respectively. This has been known to occur even in cases of near matches, such as Paul/Saul. For endowments given in languages other than English, new names are translated to their nearest equivalent in that language.
