People horrifically fucking up facts about evolution and genetics too support their stupid beliefs or to seem smart and “rational” is probably one of my big pet peeves

Yeah. An enormous number of racists, misogynists, homophobes and transphobes I’ve met eventually whip out something about evolutionary biology and they never, ever, ever, ever have the slightest shadow of even a half-right idea what any of it means or ever cite a claim ever actually made by a scientific study.

Here’s a quick handy reference list or anyone who isn’t sure:

  • Homosexuality does exist in almost all social species.
  • “Alpha males” are not a real phenomenon and in fact the most aggressive males tend to be the least reproductively successful.
  • “Survival of the fittest” simply means that the success of a species hinges on how well it “fits” its environment. It does not mean that stronger or smarter individuals are supposed to succeed. Those things can even be a detriment in nature by wasting too many resources.
  • “Race” is not a biological concept. Someone who looks different from you has the same human genes, just a different grab-bag of dominant traits.
  • Evolution is not a march towards higher complexity, more intelligence or even more adaptability. It’s just a fluctuation of characteristics dictated by environmental pressures and mutation. A slime mold isn’t “less evolved” than a hawk, just adapted for success under different parameters.
  • People didn’t evolve “from apes.” It’s more complicated than that. We are a category of ape, sharing a common ancestor with the other apes.
  • No human on Earth is “closer” to an evolutionary ancestor than any other. We all descended from the same one.
  • Neanderthals were also a “sibling” species of ours. We didn’t evolve from them.
  • Some of us did, however, cross-breed with Neandethal man. It is exclusively non-African races, such as white people, who still carry hybrid human/Neanderthal genes. Whoops, sorry “white purity” skinheads, you’re actually mixed with a whole other species.

Some more stuff!

  • Humans are actually more genetically homogeneous than most people suspect. This is possibly due to a population bottleneck at some point in our evolutionary past. Two chimpanzees from different sides of a jungle are likely more genetically different to each other than any two human beings in the world.
  • Our big brains may help us use tools, but what was really principal in their development was the need for empathy, communication, and cooperation.
  • Humans. Are. Social. So social it drove an incredibly energetically costly increase in our brain size.  Don’t believe anyone who says its our nature to fight “every man for themself.” We’re humans, not bears. We fight for each other.
  • And we always have. Fossil remains are found of ancient humans who bore signs of crucial mobility impairments that lived to notable ages. Some even have sticks or other mobility aids – community care and support is our way. We don’t cast off those with impairments, we stand by them.
  • Human sexual dimorphism is on a decreasing trend. Our ancestors had greater difference in canine size and overall size. Our dimorphism gap has gotten smaller.
  • Occam’s razor is the principal that whatever is the simplest explanation is probably the most likely one. Don’t believe someone who says the reason we evolved bipedalism is so that males could carry gifts to females to woo them. Yes, this is a real ‘theory’ on how bipedalism evolved.
  • Skin tone is an adaptation of UV levels vs vitamin D levels. Both come from the sun. UV is harmful, so where sun is plentiful populations develop a darker skin tone for more protection. The skin needs sun to create vitamin D, so where sun is scarce, the skin tone lightens to allow more sun in. This is literally all it is.
  • Final thing: No one’s mind is really equipped to fully understand how long a billion years is, or a million, or even tens of thousands of years. Evolution takes place over a loooong time. Its very, very, slow, slower than we can really comprehend. We can’t “stand in the way” of natural selection by caring for our ill. We don’t need to “help” evolution in any way. It inevitably happens, but not on any sort of timescale we could possibly affect, so don’t fall for anyone that tells you not to “stand in the way” of natural selection. That’s fascism, and its utterly pseudo-scientific.
  • Not to mention natural selection doesn’t have a “will” that you can stand in the way of. Its not an entity with wants, its a millions-year long process. And its impossible for our decisions to “stand in its way.” Our decisions to care for one another are what brought our species where it is, plain and simple.

Throwback to all these Jesus comics I drew in 2012…

Good post OP

Good post, OP, and if you ever decide to do another may I please suggest “NOT IN HEBREW IT DOESN’T” as a punchline? So much of the Old Testament is HORRIFICALLY translated from the Tanakh, it drives me batty.

WAIT WAIT WHAT DOES IT SAY?????? I NEED TO LIKE,, DESTROY MI MUM FOR BEING REALLY HOMOPHOBIC

Okay, so, strictly speaking, the infamous Leviticus 18:22 does say “forbidden.” Here’s the thing:

Apparently tumblr mobile doesn’t want to show @prismatic-bell ’s long and in-depth essay, so here’s the screenshots, because it still shows up on mobile browsers:

Much appreciated.

I love when scholarship and history debunks bullshit

…I sadly have more bullshit to report.

“removed for violating guidelines”, EVERY screenshot.

Let’s try this again

I am horrified that @prismatic-bell keeps getting censored + this info is gold.

Many thanks, @pulmonary-poultry. This isn’t the only Jewish post of mine that’s mysteriously stopped showing up in searches and/or vanished from my blog entirely, but it is the one I get the most requests to repost, so this saves me from having to rewrite the whole damned essay. @the-invisible-self, thanks for bringing it to my attention that someone was able to preserve the post!

what the FUCK??? WHICH community guidelines would an analysis of the Old Testament violate??

unless tumblr staff is just removing images that get reported a bunch of times

Never not gonna reblog

@prismatic-bell RESPECT 💜

I mean I’m not Christian, so I don’t completely understand everything going on here, but… proving the fact that all these ___phobes twist religious literature and religion into something they can use to manipulate people into doing and believing what they think is ‘right’ and exposing all their asses is worth the confusion. So… HECK YEAH REBLOGGGGG!!!!!

since halloween’s right around the corner here’s a reminder from your local Jewish Person to not dress up in antisemitic caricatures ie as a stereotypical jew (big nose, yalmulke, payot, dark curly hair, etc), it’s not funny and it’s incredibly offensive. my people are not costumes and neither is our culture.

hi hello it’s your Local Jew again with another reminder to reblog this everyday until halloween and after it bc i see a lot of you ignoring this like you do the other times when jews try and reach out to you so please keep giving this attention and educating yourselves pls and ty

@SaraSoueidan: Dear men, This is how you greet a veiled Muslim woman (a Hijabi). Hand on your chest, not offering to shake hers. 🙋

so prominent BLM activist deray mckesson just retweeted this which i think is super cool for various reasons :)))

I did not know this. Is it OK for a non Muslim woman to shake hands with a Hijabi? Or do we do the hand on chest thing too?@popcanpoli

hey so i don’t wear a hijab and i’m not muslim so i definitely don’t have the authority to answer this question (or any other questions i’ve been getting abt this) (i’m just a lil canadian politics blog i didn’t expect this to blow up lol)

BUT here are some tweets by the original tweeter (who wears a hijab) that clarify some things

one:

two:

three:

This is also good if you’re meeting an Orthodox Jewish person who’s not the same gender as you!  Not all Orthodox Jews hold by this restriction, and many consider it a permissible exception to shake hands in a formal greeting context; I’d guess this is parallel to Ms. Soueidan’s last-quoted tweet above.  And as that says, the sensible thing is to wait for initiation.

learned something new. awesome

On that note, it’s also no wonder Kanagi dislikes the Wings as much as she does, the Magius are all, for the most part, rich, privileged West Kamihama girls who go into the more economically disadvantaged East side and manipulate girls into joining them. Whether they meant to or not, they took advantage of and perpetuated the classism of the city for their own selfish goals and I can see exactly why Kanagi’s so disgusted by them. It’s also why she just gave Tsukasa a figurative slap on the wrist and related to Midori so much when she tried to appeal to her.

The Thing with Raymond

So thing is about Raymond is that there are a lot of factors as to why he is so popular and it’s getting really out of hand with people trading him

The fact that he’s a new interesting looking cat villager isn’t least among them. Cat villagers have always been pretty popular, and so it’s not surprising that a new one would get a lot of love. He is also smug, which is probably the male personality type that bothers people the least. The fact that he is very anthropomorphized, has glasses and heterochromia only makes him more of an interesting looking villager.

And of course he fits the cartoon twink aesthetic a la onceler that large parts of fandoms like

But it’s not just his appeal that has lead to this whole Thing. It’s also his rarity. Raymond is actually the most rare villager in the game, which a lot of people probably don’t realize.

You might think you get an equal chance to get any villager when you go to mystery islands, but that isn’t the case. See, when the game decides what villager will be at your island, it rolls two factors. First it rolls for the species of the villager. So here, there is an equal chance of any species. After it figures out the species, it rolls for the specific villager. Here is what makes some more rare than others. There are more cats than any other species, so your chances of getting the specific cat you want are much slimmer than, say, getting the specific octopus you want.

Now you don’t have a slimmer chance of getting Raymond than any other cat, so what makes Raymond more rare? Amiibo cards.

Raymond is the only new cat, which means that he is the only cat that doesn’t have an amiibo card. This means that the only way you can get Raymond with 100% certainty is by trading him with someone else but also means that more Raymonds aren’t being introduced into the ecosystem like character with amiibos are.

And people might not realize this, but there IS an ecosystem when it comes to the pool of villagers available. When you let a villager leave without someone taking them, that villager doesn’t just disappear. They will go into a queue of villagers and then move into an empty space that someone on your friend list has if it’s left open too long. So once a villager exists, it exists for theoretically all AC players and can jump from friend list to friend list as long as they aren’t allowed to leave while you have no friends or aren’t connected to the internet.

So villagers with amiibo cards can be introduced into this ecosystem all the time, but Raymond and the other new villagers can only be introduced when they’re found, and Raymond is the one least likely to be found.

So that is basically why this Whole Thing with Raymond is happening. There is a scarcity of Raymonds that doesn’t exist as severely with any other villager. But the good news is, this will calm down. More people will find more Raymonds over time and introduce him into the internet ecosystem and his value will decrease when more and more become available. Nintendo is going to print amiibos for him eventually which will mean there will be a code to introduce him, which will probably cause the Raymond market to collapse. Raymond is an investment that will decrease over time, so if you want him, just wait. Don’t spend real money on him or trade a thousand NMT. He will become much less scarce over time. He may stay popular, but the scalper market will shrink for him.

Do not invest in the Raymond markets. His stock value will plummet.

Raymond is a lesson in artificial scarcity

I’ve started converting some of the Science Pusheen illustrations into Animal Crossing patterns for everyone to use. Feel free to use them as you wish. Will make more in a week or so when I have more spare time! 😊

shen,,,,,,,,,,im thirsting for pegoryu,,,,,,,plz hmu w fanfic recs my dude

Okay I have like.. sadly not too many on rec right now because I haven’t gone around to really dedicate time to reading a bunch… but here are a few that were short and sweet!

———

‘requiescence’ by wynnings is a very short and sweet fic about the two dudes being cute and cuddling on a couch. That’s pretty much all I can say. Very sweet, Ryuji is prime gay™ so all is well

‘i think i’ll shout’ by unsungilluminationis also REALLY short, literally just a tiny dialogue fic but the idea behind it is super cute and the custom skin for it makes it seem like the game too! Showing other dialogue options was a nice touch as well!

‘Couldn’t Endure‘ by kibouin is a 6 chapter fic about Ryuji ‘dying’ (reaching 0 hp) in mementos and the aftermath of them reviving him… also Ryuji is trying to accept that he has feelings for Akira. Pretty adorable, I’ve read up to chapter 4, still have to finish the last two but I seriously recommend!

‘the kids aren’t alright‘ by avianmalware is a fic that hurts me deep inside by how sweet and sad it is at the same time. This is a heavy spoiler fic after the 6th palace. The PT’s (especially Ryuji) are immensely worried about Akira and how he’s been doing. Ryuji is also being strangely intimate and it’s really adorable.
