Archive of Interest

@hundredsandthousandsandmillions

This is my new blog exclusively about me screaming about my interests. This is a discourse and hate free zone, and fact checking is encouraged, ‘cause I love learning! (But please be nice about it, hate will be blocked). I may or may not cite my sources, but i will if asked.

The notes of that anti-live post are hilarious because they're full of people saying "I didn't consent to seeing this at the top of my dash" AND saying "bring back the porn."

It has been only five years and now tumblr users are handwringing about tits at the top of the dash and going "Teacher, teacher, how come tumblr live user PayMeDeer gets to post female presenting nipples and I don't?"

Hall monitor behavior, that. You can complain about Live without throwing cammers under the bus.

Remember kids: if you see someone doing sex work on tumblr, no you didn't.

I broadly agree but the issue is that there's no way to not see it. You can't unfollow the people rebloging it to your dash like you can with sex worker accounts making posts.

Okay so this is not a dig at you and a lot of this post isn't even about what you're saying here but people say this (which is correct) and a lot of incorrect information about Live and the attitudes I constantly see about Tumblr Live (which are not reflective of your response here) irritate the hell out of me so I'm responding here.

There's no way to permanently turn off Live on mobile so block tumblr live tuesday is probably your best option on mobile.

As to why tumblr doesn't allow that to happen I need people to understand that Live is generating ad money. I don't know if Meet is paying tumblr to have access to viewers or if tumblr is taking a cut from the ad money but one way or another it is a revenue source. Is it ideal that Tumblr is partnering with a streaming service that collects user data? Not really, no. But the site needs money to exist and Live/Meet is significantly less repugnant than several other options.

Tumblr live DOES collect more data than tumblr and it is good to keep that in mind but people are calling tumblr live spyware and I need people to A) learn the what the fuck spyware actually is and B) start to recognize the data that pretty much all other apps are collecting on you; twitter and yelp collect a similar amount of data to Tumblr Live, Facebook (including IG) and Amazon collect a lot more data than Tumblr Live. This is not spyware (also for the record Live never violated GDPR that's just straight up tumblr reading comprehension circulating as fact.)

BUT OKAY SO YOU WANT TUMBLR LIVE OFF YOUR DASH. HERE'S HOW TO DO IT ON DESKTOP.

THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE FOR FIREFOX ONLY BECAUSE YOU SHOULD BE USING FIREFOX ONLY I'M SORRY CHROMEBOOK USERS. ALSO CHROME COLLECTS A FUCKLOAD MORE DATA ON YOU THAN TUMBLR LIVE SO IF YOU USE CHROME BUT ARE CALLING TUMBLR LIVE SPYWARE KINDLY STFU.

(again i'm sorry @alcibiades-hacks-it this yelling is not about you the next bit which is about removing it is a response to you I recognize you are not doing the other things i'm yelling about sorry sorry)

So: step by step,

How to remove Tumblr Live from your dash on desktop

  • In the Dashboard select "My Filters"
  • Paste this text: www.tumblr.com##.EiXnY.wQ2Ma into "My Filters"
  • hit "apply changes," refresh Tumblr, and watch Live disappear.

Before:

After:

I can't say for sure if this particular filter will last or will be universally successful, but if you get tired of seeing things you don't want to see on the internet I really really really suggest installing firefox + ublock origin and getting comfortable with using element blocking with ublock. Generally all that you have to do is right-click the page, select the element blocker from the menu, then click on whatever is irritating you, then select "create" and the irritating thing is gone.

Once you get used to using the element blocker the power that websites have to irritate you is greatly reduced.

(for instance if you have the shaking gift box because your delightful friends sent you crabs last year that you aren't ready to use yet you can block " www.tumblr.com##.pSHgK.EvhBA " to make the shaking vanish from the corner of your vision)

to remove live from the sidebar as well as the dash, I used the element picker and filtered

www.tumblr.com##.gM9qK > li.g8SYn.IYrO9:nth-of-type(4) > .tDT48

works perfectly atm.

Howdy! I saw your post about car buying and I just wanted to recommend CarComplaints.com. It lists the most common issues associated with the year, make, and model of a vehicle along with the average price of repair and mileage. Definitely a useful resource if you don't know a lot about cars (like me!) (P.S used Toyotas, esp RAV4s, are pretty much always overpriced unfortunately...)

Avatar

thank you! this is just the kind of really helpful website I was looking for. and dammit that sucks to hear about toyotas, those are the most reliable and easy to fix from what folks told me. I really do not have any frame of reference for how reliability and fixability drop between a toyota and something else, so I was looking at toyotas.

So I thought this was commonly known internet navigation (but apparently it might just be those of us who have been using the internet since the 90's who still know it). Or so it seems based on... a grumpy comment I got.

When you see an arrow like this:

It means you click it to expand out a hidden section.

It's an accordion section/menu! It's useful in web design to hide information that may be overwhelming under specific headers so people can only see what they need.

Here I'm using it for people who need the content warnings to be able to check, but for those who don't need them and don't want to be spoiled to just move right past without accidentally reading anything.

It's still the user's responsibility to click the arrow and read things as they need! But it is all warned. (And, yes, the all encompassing issues are already a tag on the fic, I'm just providing additonal warnings per chapter.)

Listen to your elders

So last week I posted abut the importance of downloading your fic. And then three days later AO3 went down for 24 hours. No one was more weirded out by this than I was. But while y’all were acting like the library at Alexandria was on fire I was reading my download fic and editing chapter eight of Buck, Rogers, and the 21st Century. And also thinking about what I could do to be helpful when the crisis was actually over.

So first off, I’m going to repeat that if you’re going to bookmark a fic, you really need to also download the fic and back it up in a safe place. I just do it automatically now and it’s a good habit to get into.

But let’s talk about some other scenarios. Last October I lost power for over a week after hurricane Ian. Apart from not having internet or A/C I did find plenty to do, I collect books so I had plenty to read, but maybe, unlike me, your favorite comfort reads aren’t sitting on a bookshelf. So let’s do something about that, shall we?

In olden times many long years ago around 1995 we printed off a lot of fic. It was mostly SOP to print a fic you planned to reread and stick it in a three ring binder. And that’s totally valid today too, but you can also make a very nice paperback with a minimum amount of skill and materials.

Let’s start with the download; Go to Ao3 and select your fic, we’ll be working with one of mine. This method works best with one shots, long fic tends to need a more complicated approach. Get yourself an HTML download

Open up the HTML download and select all then copy paste into any word processor. Set the page to landscape and two columns, then change the font to something you find easy to read, this is your book, no judgement. This is all you have to do for layout but I like to play a little bit. I move all the meta, summary, notes to the end and pick out a fun font for the title:

No time like the present to do a quick proofread. Congratulations, you’ve just created your first typeset. On to the fun part.

Now you’re going to need some materials:  8.5x11in paper ruler one sheet of 12x12 medium card stock (60-80lb) scissors pencil pen or fine tip marker sheet of wax paper white glue two binder clips 2 heavy books or 1 brick butter knife

You’ll also need a printer, if you’re in the US there is almost a 100% chance your local library has a printer you can use if you don’t have your own. None of these materials are expensive and you can literally use cheap copy paper and Elmers glue.

Print your text block, one page per side. Fold the first page in half so that the blank side is inside and the printed side out:

use the butter knife to crease the edge. Repeat on all the sheets. When you’ve finished, stack them up with the raw edge on the left and the folded edge on the right. I used standard copy paper, because you’re only printing on one side there’s no bleed to worry about. Take the text block and line everything up. Use the binder clips to hold the raw edge in place.

Wrap the text block in the wax paper so that the raw edge and binder clips are facing out. I’m going to use my home built book press but you don’t need one, a brick or a couple of books or anything else heavy will work fine.

Once the text block is anchored down, take off he binder clips and get out the glue.

You can use a brush but you don’t need one, smear some glue on that raw edge.

Go make a margarita, watch The Mandalorian, call your mother. Don’t come back for at least an hour

In an hour smear some more glue on there and shift your brick forward so that the whole book is covered. This keeps the paper from warping. While glue part 2 is drying we’ll do the cover. Get out your 12x12 cardstock

Mark the cardstock off at 8.5 inches and cut it. Measure in 5.5 inches from the left and put in a score line with the butter knife (the back edge not the sharp edge)

Carefully fold the score line, this is your front cover. You have some options for the cover title, you can use a cutting machine like a cricut if you have one, you can print out a title on the computer and use carbon paper to transfer the text to the cardstock. I was in a mood so I just freehanded that beoch. Pencil first then in pen.

Take your text block out from under your brick. Line it up against the score mark and mark the second score on the other side of the spine

Fold the score and glue the textblock into the cover at the spine. Once the glue dries up mark the back cover with the pencil and then trim the back cover to fit with your scissors.

Voila:

I’m going to put this baby on the shelf next to the Silmarillion.

The whole process, not counting drying time, took less than an hour.

If you want to make a book of a longer fic, I recommend Renegade Publishing, they have a ton of resources for fan-binders.

Screw Up Your Taxes? Here’s How To Get Out of Paying Tax Penalties

For anyone who has ever fucked up their taxes and received a hefty fine, there is a little known and seldom used get-out-of-jail-free card (and by “jail” we mean “penalty fees”).

It’s not complicated, it’s easy to obtain, and anyone who pays taxes can use it. Yet since this lovely loophole was established in 2001, it’s been used relatively infrequently. This is because, according to a report by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), most tax payers and tax preparation professionals don’t even know it exists (more on this later).

So if this is the first time you’re hearing about a tax penalty get-out-of-jail-free card, trust us: it does exist, we’ve personally used it, and so can you.

It’s called a first-time abatement waiver, and it’s how we got out of paying a $4,800 fine to the IRS.

so, some other useful tips. Note that some of these are from my experience in Canada, so mileage may vary depending on nationality.

  • File your taxes every year. Personal taxes always, business taxes if you have one. Even if you don’t have any income or lost money (looking at you, bitches). This tells the CRA/IRS/insert tax body of choice what you’ve been up too. For personal taxes, it may also entitle you to a lot of nice tax rebates worth some serious $$ (in Canada, for example, a lot of disability payments and child credits from the gov’t come through the CRA). For businesses, you can carry forward some business losses and count them against future profits.
  • If you’re unsure, get help. Especially if you have business taxes or complicated personal taxes. The peace of mind is worth the cost. See if you can take advantage of free/cheap tax help if you’re doing personal taxes and you’re short on cash. Or if you’re doing an occasional thing like winding up a business or dealing with the last filing for a deceased person.
  • do your best to understand tax-related deadlines. Avoid some problems by knowing when you have to get shit done by. see the relevant websites and/or talk to your tax person from point 2.
  • Keep paperwork related to money stuff. Even if it’s just tossed into a box. That way you have it when deadlines loom. Obviously it’s better if you organize it, but having it is better than not having it. And if it’s in a box it’s probably in decent condition. From personal experience, don’t make your accountant have to try and decipher a receipt that’s been on the floor of your car for six months and is covered in bootprints, coffee, and manure. Just don’t.

More tips for our Canadian bitchlings!

Y’all in the American SW and west Mexico better check the national hurricane center and your weather for this weekend and next week.

Hurricane Hilary is about to make landfall and that whole desert area is supposed to get a years worth of rain or more. Death Valley is supposed to get twice the annual rainfall. Severe winds, massive flooding, and landslides are all strong possibilities.

This is gonna get ugly. Please spread the word. This is a majorly anomalous event and people may be unaware of the threat headed their way.

Holy shit thank you OP. I lived on the east coast and moved to AZ 4 years ago… thought I was done with this stuff. Literally this is the first I heard about it so thank you for getting the word out.

Shit. I have a post I've been holding onto about hurricane preparation. One moment, I'll post it.

I’m sorry what

“you need documentation” ok fine

i have no idea if this will help with your situation, but erin reed has a map with all informed consent clinics- this may be completely unhelpful but i know these clinics make it easier to access hrt with less barriers.

so I made the original post as a joke, but then I saw this and found an informed consent provider in my area and I’m gonna make an appointment. genuinely thank you, this reblog could make my healthcare journey so much easier. hope this helps someone else too <3

Please keep this circulating. Cops are getting more and more brazen, know your rights!

good to know

Reblogging every time this goes past

I had to learn my rights the hard way…read this, study it, memorize it, this is insanely valuable information.

Im not even in the US (where I assume this is from) and I’m reblogging it, amazing information to try and give to anyone who may need it

Just adding that there was a case where a man asked for a lawyer “dawg”, and wasn’t given one because the cops purposely misunderstood him saying “I want a lawyer dog”. Please remember to state that you are invoking your right to remain silent and that you are invoking your right to an attorney. Cops will purposefully lie to you and will twist your words extremely so they don’t have to enforce your rights. Never give them the chance to do so.

Hello language learners!

Have you tried Librivox?

It's a website that has public domain audio books in TONS (47 to be exact) of languages! (my followers, yes, it has Finnish too!)

You can find loads of free books on there! I recommend it a lot!

For Finnish books, I noticed they even have Seitsemän Veljestä which is a must-read for every Finnish student.

Here's a link:

PSA:

Acetaminophen/paracetamol has a hard stop upper dose limit, above which it becomes extremely toxic.

That limit is 4g (8 “extra strength” (500mg) tablets) in 24 hours (about 2 tablets every 6 hours).

A single dose of 22 extra strength tablets can kill you.

Taking 12 or more tablets per day for more than a week can also kill you (this is about 3 tablets every 6 hours).

Symptoms of overdose take up to 24 hours to manifest, and are fairly difficult to distinguish from other problems. They include abdominal pain (especially right upper quadrant), nausea, malaise, and confusion.

The antidote (n-acetylcystine) must be given within 8hours of ingestion in order to be useful.

After 10 hours the only thing that will work is a liver transplant.

You might think “why would I ever accidentally take so much?”

Well, acetaminophen is in almost everything in the cold/flu/pain aisle. Migraine combos like Excedrin, cold and flu combos like NyQuil, basically anything that says “non-aspirin pain relief”, and anything that’s branded as a fever reducer. It’s all probably acetaminophen/paracetamol.

So the goal of this post is to get you to read the labels on your medications. Because taking taking Tylenol and NyQuil together for a week (like you might if you had the flu) could kill you.

It’s also a terrible way to die. If you die from this, it will probably take months and you will suffer very much the entire time. It is not an escape, you’ll still have all your same problems and many more.

if you are dealing with extreme heat or even just. moderate heat in your area right now. 80f/26c is when it starts getting toasty for a lot of people. if you are in a heat wave and you have not done yourself the favor of googling fucking "heat exhaustion symptoms" i am shaking you violently right now. look it up. burn the symptoms into your brain. heatstroke is no joke and it can and WILL sneak up on you before you're aware it's even an issue. ohh my god

if you are outside and it is hot and sunny and you are sweating thru your clothes or feeling tired or starting to get irrationally agitated or upset in another way or feeling nauseous or your heart is pounding etc etc if you are feeling Weird and Bad for no apparent reason while you are in a warm/hot area then i have news for you! you need to cool down! right now! oh my god.

Avatar

and there's a very good chance that you're gonna think "it's not heat exhaustion, i don't feel any warmer than i have all day" when you consider it as a reason why you are suddenly feeling weirdbad for no apparent reason during a record-breaking heatwave and i would like to say. there is no harm in sitting in the shade and drinking some water even if heat exhaustion isn't the cause of whatever ailment is inflicting itself upon u. once i swore up and down to my bf that i was just kinda tired and headachy and got bitchy about the possibility of being overheated and needing to drink water. because heat exhaustion tends to make you bitchy. but i did as he asked and drank some cold water and my condition immediately improved. because it was heat exhaustion and heat exhaustion is evil and a liar. sit down. drink water

Kitchen appliances I would recommend purchasing when moving out on your own:

  • Air fryer
  • One of those panini press grill things (not only can you make sandwiches but you can grill chicken and steak if you have an expensive model)
  • Rice cooker (not only good for rice but quinoa and any other grain, alternatively you could buy an Instapot)
  • Electric kettle (depends on how much tea you drink but it’s good for boiling water for cleaning and preheating water for pasta etc)

Kitchen appliances I would not recommend buying when you move out on your own:

  • Counter top coffee maker (you should not be drinking an entire pot of coffee on your own and it will be stale by the time you get to the bottom, plus these bitches suck to clean, Keurigs, French presses and stove top percolators where you make one or two cups at a time are more practical for a single person)

Here are some things it’s okay to buy off brand/cheap:

  • Cleaning supplies. Most cut rate sponges, bleach sprays, Clorox wipe knock offs and cleaning chemicals get the job done just fine.
  • Food staples like pasta, canned vegetables, rice etc.

Here are some things you should never buy off brand/cheap:

  • Trash bags. I made the mistake of buying Dollar General brand ones and they ripped several times, sending garbage all over my yard while I tried to take the trash out. I had to double and sometimes triple bag which was not economical in the long run.
  • Toilet paper. The two and one ply stuff sucks. You you have to use much more than you would if you bought quality paper.

Good luck and God bless you to any college freshmen out there.

toaster ovens are also very useful, much more than a regular toaster. you can do many things you can do in an oven, just faster and with less hassle

I second toaster ovens. I cook 70% of my meals in there and it was the best gift i was ever given.

Using this anon hate I got as a teaching example

So if you get anon hate like this, there is a few things you can do. (Also once again the person linked is totally innocent, anon is just using a link to them for some reason, do not bother them)

First of all, Tumblr made it so only people who have accounts and are logged in can send anons AT ALL. So if you want to you can click the three little dots in the upper right corner and report them

Anyways once you’re there, select the type of harassment you’re getting, after consulting a few people on discord I decided it was the second to last one.

Then of course you fill out the little form

Afterwards you can hit “Submit and Block”

Fun fact: when you block an anon you permanently (there is no way to reverse it) block their IP address and they can’t send you any more anons, also as a bonus, if you’ve received a LOT of anon hate and then you block one of them, reload your inbox to see how many it got rid of, because it might have just been one loser spamming you. If you don’t feel like reporting them then that’s fine too, just block those suckers.

And finally, you can take solace in the fact that you could never be as big of a loser as the anons sending people hate.

TIP for any fellow disabled folks who have cats ❣️ if you got chronic fatigue or back pain or POTS where you cant bend down easily or even if you're able bodied and just feeling sick get one of these shits ↓↓↓

It's got one huge sifter so after your cat(s) use it you just grab it, shake it side to side a little, dump the poop into a bag, put the now clean litter in a fresh box (this one gives you two litter boxes for this reason) and pour the clean litter in the box on top of the pan. You can put the second box under it to keep it out of the way for when you switch over again.

This Arm and Hammer one was only 15 bucks on amazon and it's so much easier to clean. It is heavy to lift up the full pan and dump the cleaned litter into the second box so keep that in mind, but it's so much faster and less arduous than shoveling the caked up cat shit for 10 minutes and having your back screaming in pain, numb feet, and a head rush from bending over 😭 i didn't know these existed until now so that's why I'm talking about it anyway if you see this you should pet your cat for me maybe give em a kiss on their stupid little forehead 🤎🐈🐈‍⬛

how to find literally any post on a blog in seconds (on desktop)

there are so many posts about ~tumblr is so broken, you can’t find any post on your own blog, it’s impossible, bluhrblub~

I am here to tell you otherwise! it is in fact INCREDIBLY easy to find a post on a blog if you’re on desktop/browser and you know what you’re doing:

  • url.tumblr.com/tagged/croissant will bring up EVERY post on the blog tagged with the specific and exact phrase #croissant. every single post, every single time. in chronological order starting with the most recent post. note: it will not find #croissants or that time you made the typo #croidnssants. for a tag with multiple words, it’s just /tagged/my-croissant and it will show you everything with the exact phrase #my croissant
  • url.tumblr.com/tagged/croissant/chrono will bring up EVERY post on the blog tagged with the exact phrase #croissant, but it will show them in reverse order with the oldest first
  • url.tumblr.com/search/croissant isn’t as perfect at finding everything, but it’s generally loads better than the search on mobile. it will find a good array of posts that have the word croissant in them somewhere. could be in the body of the post (op captioned it “look at my croissant”) or in the tags (#man I want a croissant). it won’t necessarily find EVERYTHING like /tagged/ does, but I find it’s still more reliable than search on mobile. you can sometimes even find posts by a specific user by searching their url. also, unlike whatever random assortment tumblr mobile pulls up, it will still show them in a more logically chronological order
  • url.tumblr.com/day/2020/11/05 will show you every post on the blog from november 5th, 2020, in case you’re taking a break from croissants to look for destiel election memes
  • url.tumblr.com/archive/ is search paradise. easily go to a particular month and see all posts as thumbnails! search by post type! search by tags but as thumbnails now
  • url.tumblr.com/archive/filter-by/audio will show you every audio post on your blog (you can also filter by other post types). sometimes a little imperfect if you’re looking for a video when the op embedded the video in a text post instead of posting as a video post, etc
  • url.tumblr.com/archive/tagged/croissant will show you EVERY post on the blog tagged with the specific and exact phrase #croissant, but it will show you them in the archive thumbnail view divided by months. very useful if you’re looking for a specific picture of a croissant that was reblogged 6 months ago and want to be able to scan for it quickly
  • url.tumblr.com/archive/filter-by/audio/tagged/croissant will show you every audio post tagged with the specific phrase #croissant (you can also filter by photo or text instead, because I don’t know why you have audio posts tagged croissant)

the tag system on desktop tumblr is GENUINELY amazing for searching within a specific blog!

caveat: this assumes a person HAS a desktop theme (or “custom theme”) enabled. a “custom theme” is url.tumblr.com, as opposed to tumblr.com/url. I’ve heard you have to opt-into the former now, when it used to be the default, so not everyone HAS a custom theme where you can use all those neat url tricks.

if the person doesn’t have a “custom theme” enabled, you’re beholden to the search bar. still, I’ve found the search bar on tumblr.com/url is WAY more reliable than search on mobile. for starters, it tends to bring posts up in a sensible order, instead of dredging up random posts from 2013 before anything else

if you’re on mobile, I’m sorry. godspeed and good luck finding anything. (my one tip is that if you’re able to click ON a tag rather than go through the search bar, you’ll have better luck. if your mutual has recently reblogged a post tagged #croissant, you can click #croissant and it’ll bring up everything tagged #croissant just like /tagged/croissant. but if there’s no readily available tag to click on, you have to rely on the mobile search bar and its weird bizarre whims)

Fuck it, Urbanism hot take night, none of you bitches actually know what gentrification is

Those dilapidated warehouses being demolished and turned into a restaurant or an apartment complex is not gentrification

No, that man with a metrosexual haircut wearing airpods on the bus is not gentrifying your neighborhood, he is a person, not the American socio-economic landscape

@clearancecreedwatersurvival You'd be surprised how many people fail to grasp this

Like people will see affordable housing being built and say "Gentrification" because it's a 5 over 1 and has modern architecture

@timelineman-of-titors-edge A 5 over 1 is this bitch, the most hated architecture in the nation:

They are incredibly cheap to build apartment buildings with the current building codes. They are called 5 over 1's because they are 5 floors with wooden frames over a concrete base

Shout out to someone finally getting the point of this post

As soon as I read this article I ordered a copy for myself. I prefer physical books for cookbooks so I am waiting for it to arrive next Monday. (I enjoy flipping through, discovering interesting recipes and seeing the pictures without being online.)

This is the book I've been dying to read, as I told Jules when I found him on twitter. He's very kind and says he looks forward to hearing what I think after I've had a chance to read and use it.

Before this the only thing I found was a guide to baking with brain fog on the King Arthur's flour site. Useful but I needed so much more.

I look forward to more volumes, such as Cripping Your Outdoor Kitchen. I'm guessing this first book will start many conversations and that will lead to a mass sharing of tips and tricks throughout the Disability Universe. We Spoonies already discuss getting calories in on days when it seems impossible. But this makes me think that cooking more often may be doable with a bit of guidance.
