The notes of that anti-live post are hilarious because they're full of people saying "I didn't consent to seeing this at the top of my dash" AND saying "bring back the porn."
It has been only five years and now tumblr users are handwringing about tits at the top of the dash and going "Teacher, teacher, how come tumblr live user PayMeDeer gets to post female presenting nipples and I don't?"
Hall monitor behavior, that. You can complain about Live without throwing cammers under the bus.
Remember kids: if you see someone doing sex work on tumblr, no you didn't.
I broadly agree but the issue is that there's no way to not see it. You can't unfollow the people rebloging it to your dash like you can with sex worker accounts making posts.
Okay so this is not a dig at you and a lot of this post isn't even about what you're saying here but people say this (which is correct) and a lot of incorrect information about Live and the attitudes I constantly see about Tumblr Live (which are not reflective of your response here) irritate the hell out of me so I'm responding here.
There's no way to permanently turn off Live on mobile so block tumblr live tuesday is probably your best option on mobile.
As to why tumblr doesn't allow that to happen I need people to understand that Live is generating ad money. I don't know if Meet is paying tumblr to have access to viewers or if tumblr is taking a cut from the ad money but one way or another it is a revenue source. Is it ideal that Tumblr is partnering with a streaming service that collects user data? Not really, no. But the site needs money to exist and Live/Meet is significantly less repugnant than several other options.
Tumblr live DOES collect more data than tumblr and it is good to keep that in mind but people are calling tumblr live spyware and I need people to A) learn the what the fuck spyware actually is and B) start to recognize the data that pretty much all other apps are collecting on you; twitter and yelp collect a similar amount of data to Tumblr Live, Facebook (including IG) and Amazon collect a lot more data than Tumblr Live. This is not spyware (also for the record Live never violated GDPR that's just straight up tumblr reading comprehension circulating as fact.)
BUT OKAY SO YOU WANT TUMBLR LIVE OFF YOUR DASH. HERE'S HOW TO DO IT ON DESKTOP.
THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE FOR FIREFOX ONLY BECAUSE YOU SHOULD BE USING FIREFOX ONLY I'M SORRY CHROMEBOOK USERS. ALSO CHROME COLLECTS A FUCKLOAD MORE DATA ON YOU THAN TUMBLR LIVE SO IF YOU USE CHROME BUT ARE CALLING TUMBLR LIVE SPYWARE KINDLY STFU.
(again i'm sorry @alcibiades-hacks-it this yelling is not about you the next bit which is about removing it is a response to you I recognize you are not doing the other things i'm yelling about sorry sorry)
So: step by step,
How to remove Tumblr Live from your dash on desktop
- Install Firefox
- Add the Ublock Origin Extension
- Click on the Extension icon and at the bottom of the menu select: "Open the dashboard"
- In the Dashboard select "My Filters"
- Paste this text: www.tumblr.com##.EiXnY.wQ2Ma into "My Filters"
- hit "apply changes," refresh Tumblr, and watch Live disappear.
Before:
After:
I can't say for sure if this particular filter will last or will be universally successful, but if you get tired of seeing things you don't want to see on the internet I really really really suggest installing firefox + ublock origin and getting comfortable with using element blocking with ublock. Generally all that you have to do is right-click the page, select the element blocker from the menu, then click on whatever is irritating you, then select "create" and the irritating thing is gone.
Once you get used to using the element blocker the power that websites have to irritate you is greatly reduced.
(for instance if you have the shaking gift box because your delightful friends sent you crabs last year that you aren't ready to use yet you can block " www.tumblr.com##.pSHgK.EvhBA " to make the shaking vanish from the corner of your vision)
to remove live from the sidebar as well as the dash, I used the element picker and filtered
www.tumblr.com##.gM9qK > li.g8SYn.IYrO9:nth-of-type(4) > .tDT48
works perfectly atm.
