Ziggy here. I am a work in progress and that's okay. she/her or he/him|27|Vancouver, BC. I have ADHD and lingering post-concussion syndrome so sometimes my brain goes sideways and twitches for a bit. I blog about books and theatre and a lot of queer stuff. I also write. More professional writing blog can be found over at ziggyschutz.tumblr.com, but honestly I am mostly on twitter (@ziggytschutz).

A Blacksmith’s Dream

Avatar

[id: a digital comic in black and white.

1: a blacksmith is hammering a hot piece of metal against an anvil. They have mid-length light hair (burnt at the tips) and light skin. Their face is covered with a mask, and they’re wearing a light shirt, a skirt, and a dark apron. The text reads,

“I know what I look like doesn’t matter / Especially in my line of work”

2: two well-dressed figures in the foreground admire a necklace in their hands. The blacksmith stands behind them (still wearing their mask) and wipes their hands, looking towards the figures. The text reads,

“It doesn’t matter.”

3: the blacksmith sitting on a bed, with their hair down, lit by a bedside candle. They’re facing away from the viewer, instead looking out through a dark window. The text reads,

“It doesn’t.”

4: The blacksmith is in a crowd, being offered a sword by two figures. They’re small, with elfin ears, dark skin, and long hair. One holds a delicate and wrapped up sword up to the blacksmith, the other holds a bag. The blacksmith is pointing to themself as if to say “me?”. The crowd around them appears shocked. The text reads:

“But I think I’m close to something / There’s a shift”

5: The blacksmith hammering something outside of the image, sparks flying. Their hammer is raised high to strike, and the muscles in their neck and arms are taut. Their hair is flying out behind them. The text reads,

“It’s in my hands / the hairs on my arms”

7: A closeup of the blacksmith’s eye through the slit in their mask—it’s wide and intense. Their other eye is slightly visible to the left, and sparks fill the foreground. The text reads,

“A pulse in my eye”

8: a silhouette of the smithy against a dark grey background, casting long shadows. The blacksmith is working inside, also a silhouette lit by the forge, still hammering. The text reads,

“I think maybe if I do this / (and nothing but this)”

9: a silhouette of the blacksmith being thrown backwards, against a bright white background. Pieces of metal and the blacksmith’s mask are also being thrown backwards, casting dark shadows that emphasise the explosion. The text reads,

“I might make something so extraordinary, / that I, / my body / my face / will be blasted off the surface of the earth.”

10: the blacksmith on the ground, with only their feet visible. Their mask is also on the ground. Everything is casting long shadows, as if what’s in front of them is shining. The text reads,

“No one will ever see me again, / but not because I’m not there / Their eyes will simply glance off.”

11: The blacksmith holding the sword triumphantly in front of them, surrounded by burning ruins. The sword is thin, and embellished with curls of metal around the hilt—it’s shining brightly. The blacksmith’s posture is braced as if holding it is an active effort, and their hair is loose and half covering their face. Through the hair, their eyes are shining too, and they’re smiling. The text reads,

“Blinded completely / By what I’ve made.”

It's time we decolonize the Cascadian volcanoes

If we can say Denali instead of Mt. McKinley then we can say Lawetlat'la instead of Mt. St Helens. The mountain is named Tahoma, not Rainier. Naming a mountain after Jefferson doesn't erase its true name of Seekseekqua.

One name tells of the thousand years indigenous history and culture of the tribes who live there. The other name tells me nothing but colonialism.

at one point gansey's parents tell him he can only bring one plus-one to an important political dinner because "the rules are the same for everyone and we're trying to be fair," and then they very friendly-like encourage him to bring blue because "she doesn't often get opportunities to attend events like this," and so forth

and gansey's like. i know you want me to be straight and monogamous in public but. uh. mom. dad. i cannot POSSIBLY express enough just HOW MUCH you'd rather i be publicly gay with henry cheng than bring BLUE SARGENT to your REPUBLICAN POLITICAL FUNDRAISER.

Iroh: so Toph, what are your goals in life?

Toph: I’ve been banned from every major city’s transportation system except Omashu

Toph: I don’t know what their limit is but I will fucking find it

King Boomie, having exactly zero limits:

Unstoppable object meets immovable force

[Toph eventually slips up and is captured by the city guard force. Instead of being imprisoned or exiled, Toph finds herself being given audience with the King of Omashu.]
Bumi: Well, well, well. It seems I have finally met the troublemaker who has been causing such chaos with my rail systems.
Toph:
Bumi: I must say, I am thoroughly impressed with your earthbending abilities. You remind me of myself when I was a lad.
Toph: Get to the point.
Bumi: I see great potential in you, Toph Beifong. I want you inherit my title once I am no longer fit to rule.
Toph: Wait what the fuck

Why wasn’t this Toph’s future instead of becoming a freaking cop. This would have made so much more sense.

My favorite part of this is “when I am no longer fit to rule” because

1. Implying Bumi was fit to rule at any point

1.1 except maybe in the sense that he was completely shredded

2. That he has no plans to die, (nor would death necessarily make him unfit to rule), but that he apparently intends to like. Tuck his arms and legs into himself and just roll off into the sunset.

3. Given that the Earth Kingdom has an actual ruling family that causes some drama in LoK, Toph continuing to cause monarchy confusion is both 100% in character and fucking hilarious.

Toph takes over as King Bumi the second and everyone is like “no that’s not how inheriting works” and Bumi is like “No no she’s right, I did say “inherit my title!”

When toph is no longer fit to rule, she instills bumi (Aang’s son) as her heir and he is known as bumi 3.

Her first act as ruler is to ban herself from Omashu’s transportation system, thus fulfilling one of her life goals.

all in favor of this guy getting a break, say “eye”

[ID: A colored, marker-textured drawing of Jon from TMA as a creature of many eyes. Jon is drawn pink-toned in profile in the bottom right corner of the work. He wears a dress shirt and trousers and leans forward wearily, resting his forehead in his hand and holding a smoking cigarette. His face is a giant orange and red mass crowded with dozens of eyes. The eyes are of various sizes, and the irises are all colors of the rainbow, gradients blending into each other. They look in different directions and fill up almost the entire page. The remaining background is dark blue.
