@hudhaver

just hanging out (white)

On this day, 24 July 2009, 3,000 steel workers in Tonghua, China rioted and beat an executive to death when threatened with privatisation and job losses. Jianlong Steel Holding Company official Chen Guojun, who earned over 3 million yuan the previous year, planned to take over the majority state-owned Tonghua Iron and Steel Group. He announced plans to cut the number of workers from 30,000 down to around 5,000, with those made redundant receiving around 200 yuan in compensation. The firm was still profitable, but the planned restructuring was aimed at increasing profits further amidst a global economic downturn. Outraged, the workers shut down production and rioted, beating Chen, blocking roads and smashing police cars to prevent police and ambulances from reaching him. The sale was subsequently scrapped. “Back in the day my father knew a space ship captain, real good with the ladies. He used to say, “that Captain Kirk, he was as smooth as a Klingon forehead.” Well, I always thought that was odd, ya know?”

ERASE the idea that America saved lives by dropping two atomic bombs on Japan from your minds. ERASE the idea that it was anything more than a political move to scare Russia and also to satiate US curiosity as to the true ability of nuclear weapons. Nagasaki and Hiroshima were not military bases. They were heavily populated civilian cities chosen precisely bc the U.S. wanted to see how many people an atomic bomb could kill in one go. Japan was on the verge of surrendering, the U.S. literally wanted to test out their nuclear weapons on people that they deemed disposable. That is it. If those bombs were dropped by any nation other than the US veryone involved would have been tried as war criminals.

Also erase the idea that America was the hero of WWII and got into the war because they wanted so save people. They couldn’t have cared less about the victims of the Holocaust, proven by the fact that they turned away so many shiploads of refugees that went on to die at the hands of Nazis.

“the us wanted to see how many people an atomic bomb could kill in one go” oh really? Source your bullshit, asshole

i left out sources bc i figured most tumblr users know how to use google but ok

- Report produced by the U.S Strategic Bombing Group (employed by Truman) to survey the air attacks on Japan concluded that:

“Based on a detailed investigation of all the facts and supported by the testimony of the surviving Japanese leaders involved, it is the Survey’s opinion that certainly prior to 31 December 1945 and in all probability prior to 1 November 1945, Japan would have surrendered even if the atomic bombs had not been dropped, even if Russia had not entered the war, and even if no invasion had been planned or contemplated.” - page 52-56

- Dwight Eisenhower future president and then Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces also said:

I had been conscious of a feeling of depression and so I voiced to [the then Secretary of War] my grave misgivings, first on the basis of my belief that Japan was already defeated and that dropping the bomb was completely unnecessary, and secondly because I thought that our country should avoid shocking world opinion by the use of a weapon whose employment was, I thought, no longer mandatory as a measure to save American lives.” - page 380

- Admiral William Leahy, one of the highest ranking officials in the US army during WW2 wrote of the usage of the bombs:

It is my opinion that the use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. […] My own feeling was that in being the first to use it, we had adopted an ethical standard common to the barbarians of the Dark Ages. I was not taught to make war in that fashion, and wars cannot be won by destroying women and children.” - page 441

- General Douglas McArthur, another high ranking US official in the war:

[When asked about his opinion on bombing Japan] He replied that he saw no military justification for the dropping of the bomb. The war might have ended weeks earlier, he said, if the United States had agreed, as it later did anyway, to the retention of the institution of the emperor.” - page 70-71

- On September 9, 1945 Admiral William F. Halsey commander of the Third Fleet publicly quoted as saying:

“The first atomic bomb was an unnecessary experiment… . It was a mistake to ever drop it… . [the scientists] had this toy and they wanted to try it out, so they dropped it… . It killed a lot of Japs.” - online source

- The US secretary of war, Henry Stimson, speaking to President Truman:

“I was a little fearful that before we could get ready the Air Force might have Japan so thoroughly bombed out that the new weapon [the atomic bomb] would not have a fair background to show its strength.” - diary of Henry Stimson which can be found online here

- Even those deploying the bombs questioned the decision to drop them on civilian cities:

I thought that if we were going to drop the atomic bomb, drop it on the outskirts–say in Tokyo Bay–so that the effects would not be as devastating to the city and the people. I made this suggestion over the phone between the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings and I was told to go ahead with our targets.” - online source

- Lewis Strauss Assistant to the Navy Secretary James Forrestal on the locations of the bombings:

I remember suggesting […] a large forest of cryptomeria trees not far from Tokyo. The cryptomeria tree is the Japanese version of our redwood… I anticipated that a bomb detonated at a suitable height above such a forest… would lay the trees out in windrows from the center of the explosion in all directions as though they were matchsticks, and, of course, set them afire in the center. […] Secretary Forrestal agreed wholeheartedly with the recommendation.” - page 145

So to recap:

  1. A lot of American generals were against using the bomb as they felt it served an empty purpose.
  2. Those who agreed with its usage completely disagreed with dropping them on cities.
  3. Truman went ahead and had them detonated in two highly populated civilian cities anyway. Two cities that had remained mostly untouched by regular bombings throughout the war precisely bc of their lack of value to the Japanese war effort.

Draw your own conclusions.

Me: So there's been a lot more beheadings than usual, right? And decapitations?

Like i cannot emphasize enough that I cannot fucking eat without digging myself deeper in the negatives. I literally cannot afford to feed myself, get gasoline or pay tolls to get to work, pay for essential utilities like water, gas, and electric, so on and so forth. This is way more than a little urgent. Can someone please just care enough to help me survive?

dragon ball characters if you came out to them as trans because that other post annoyed me a little bit. i dont even do posts like this ever.

vegeta: he would NOT call you slurs. maybe he would have in saiyan saga but we’re talking DBS he’s pretty alright now. he would be like tch whatever i dont care but he wouldnt call you slurs. bulma however would put her foot directly up his ass and tell you they’re both very happy for you.

bulma: she would be thrilled frankly. if there’s one thing bulma loves its more women around. she would personally offer to develop capsule corp hrt and would invite you to girls only brunches with videl and chichi.

gohan: that other post was pretty much right he would say 👍 and move on. he’s the most normal person in dragon ball he would just be normal about it.

piccolo: ok he probably does know what being transgender is he’s been on earth a long time but he does not have any opinion on it. you would tell him and he would look behind you to silently ask gohan what to say because naturally gohan is there too and gohan would be like 😇👍 and piccolo would look back at you and be like 😐👍

future trunks: “oh wow me too!”

chichi: she would be kind of weird about it not like transphobic but she would ask invasive questions with good intentions. she would ask if you can have kids or something and tell you that you cant get a good husband without being able to have kids. she would tell you that she thought gohan was going to turn out to be a girl for a few years there.

goku: goku would literally not have the first clue what that shit means. someone would have to explain it to him and he’d be like haha wow thats awesome.

18: she would not fucking care.

krillin:

yamcha: unfortunately i do believe yamcha is a chaser.

instead of watching Oppenheimer, you should instead watch:

  • Barefoot Gen (dir. Mori Masaki, 1983)
  • Children of Hiroshima (dir. Kaneto Shindo, 1952)
  • Casting Blossoms to the Sky (dir. Nobuhiko Obayashi, 2011)

instead of watching Barbie, you should instead watch:

  • King Lear (dir. Jean-Luc Godard, 1986)
  • Koyaanisqatsi (dir. Godfrey Reggio, 1982)
  • The Wall (dir. Alan Parker, 1982)
  • Godzilla (dir. Ishiro Honda, 1954)

My favorite gag is mixing up the distinction between oft confused terms. Like, oh no, it's quite simple: stalactites have hit the earth's surface but stalagmites are found in space. Meteorites can be distinguished by their round snouts and asteroids by their sharper snouts. Oh, and remember: crocodiles hang from the ceiling. It's alligators that point up from the ground.

okay see this xkcd addition kind of annoys me because I'm 100% sure there's an xkcd which is 1:1 with this post joke

After the first nuclear test at Los Alamos

Many of the scientists and technicians who understood the destructive potential of the atomic bomb felt that the U.S. should first conduct a peaceful demonstration to warn the Japanese of the consequences of refusing to surrender. Szilard and several other Met Lab scientists had collaborated on the Franck Report, issued in June of 1945, which called for a demonstration. However, the Franck Report was rejected by the scientists who served on the Interim Committee’s Scientific Panel – J. Robert Oppenheimer, Enrico Fermi, Ernest Lawrence, and Arthur Compton – who wrote, “We see no acceptable alternative to direct military use.”
[...] Szilard toned down his rhetoric over the course of several different drafts of the petition. Between 65 and 150 people signed the various different drafts that he proposed at the Chicago Met Lab and Oak Ridge project site [...]
The petition fared better at Oak Ridge than at Los Alamos. Another Hungarian-American physicist, Edward Teller, brought the petition to that site with the intent to gain signatures there too. However, at the advice of J. Robert Oppenheimer, he ultimately decided not to do so. “Oppenheimer talked me out of it, saying that we as scientists have no business to meddle in political pressure of that kind. We know too little about that. I am ashamed to say that he managed to talk me out of the right intention,”

Don’t forget the first victims when you go see Oppenheimer this opening weekend. Unforgivable not to include them in the narrative.

We love us some Nolan and Cillian but this is also a story that should never have taken place.

This is what happens when the US government goes nuclear-crazy during the Cold War and mines a shit ton of uranium. Lambs born with three legs and no eyes, and human stillbirths and agonizing deformities for those that survive. For decades it was referred to as a Navajo-specific hereditary illness. No one made the link to the mines and the drinking water.

PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO LISTEN AND SHARE THIS STORY 🙏🏾. This is the story of my mother Debrah Daniels who has been held in jail in riverside county since March 2023 for aiding and protecting her grandchild (which is my niece) from two girls that attacked her at her job and even sliced her arm with a pocket knife. Those two women have been walking around free with no repercussions for what they’ve done while my mother has been in jail for 4 months. They are trying to OVERCHARGE my mother with 1st degree attempted murder among other charges and stick her with a life sentence. My mother has been underrepresented by a public defender who did not fight for her during the pre trail and now that we were finally able to provide her with a lawyer her fate is in the hands of the jury now. She has not received ANY support from her family except for me and my older sister, our family has turned their backs on us and has not contributed anything to help, they don’t even ask how’s she’s doing. Our last hope is to rely on the kindness and support from strangers to help spread awareness of my mothers story and put pressure on the courts for their injustice. This is our last hope in bringing my mother home.
