What I think some people are missing is that there's this whole genre of discourse about how society needs to return to a state where there's. to put it simply, more interdependence (especially regarding things like the family unit).

The modern world makes you lonely, they say. Then they sell trad lifestyles as the solution.

But personally I'm really glad I live in a world where if my family and my country suck I can just ditch them and go to a new place where I barely know anyone and be completely fine even if I never bother to learn who my neighbors are or anything.

People talk about this false and idealized version of the past like it was a heaven of social harmony where you happily rely on your family and have all of these nice social events full of people you are intimately familiar with and they never seem to consider what might happen if your ~community~ would rather kill you than let you be yourself or have any freedom.

Being able to both exit such groups and survive without them is life-saving.

This is a good thing in the same way no-fault divorce is a good thing.

I'm conflicted on this, personally.

I don't like the idea of everyone being either completely on their own or at the mercy of bureaucracy when it comes to having their needs met. I like being part of things, and I don't like how it seems like there aren't very many things to consistently be part of that don't involve religion. I like helping other people and I tend to not expect much in return other than "judge me by how I helped you, not how I look/act or which minority groups or subcultures I'm part of". I value community deeply, when I am able to find it and when it gives me space to thrive.

But, on the other hand, I like privacy. I find it hard to function when I have to be around large crowds for long periods of time. I can become oppositional and even combative when I'm not given a certain degree of autonomy. Sometimes I very pointedly do not want help with things because accepting the help means either compromising my privacy or deviating from whatever plans I had regarding the task in question. I like being able to express myself and live in a way that works for me without fear of losing access to my needs.

I think what's always gotten me is how, in any society that skews too far individualist OR collectivist, those who deviate from the norm will always be screwed, no matter what extent to which we can control our deviation. I would actually love a more interdependent society, but I would not want to take steps in that direction until we can somehow get more people to make their damn peace with deviations from the norm.

i hate seeing people now making fun of those who care about privacy online. i've seen people saying things like "well they already have your data. what are companies going to do with it" and it's like, that's not the point. it's that companies /shouldn't/ be able to have my data and sell it. am i aware they probably already have my data? yes, absolutely. but i'm still going to try and keep them from monetizing it any further, why are we defending companies selling data they shouldn't have to begin with though?
