it’s so weird to no longer have someone in your life. whether it’s a friend you don’t talk to anymore or a partner you’ve broken up with, it’s so weird to be left with all of this knowledge of someone else and have no use for it anymore. like the way they drink their tea, their favourite meal when they’re sad, a story they told you abt their childhood when you both saw something that reminded them of said story so now you’re reminded of it too when you see that thing. and to have someone out in the world with so much intimate and casual knowledge of you and you wonder if they feel happy or sad or uncaring when they see something that reminds them of you too.

I just saw a post saying that it’s Bad and Gross and Wrong for adults to write coming-of-age stuff with teenagers discovering their sexuality. It implies that said adults are Secretly Pedophiles and so on.

Like … you know when people write that sort of thing, they’re usually going “I, an adult, was formerly a teenager, and I remember what this felt like. I remember how confusing and messed up everything felt, so I am drawing on those experiences” and they may very well be going “This was a story *I* needed many years ago, and maybe I would have felt less alone/bad/broken/dirty if I had had it.”

If they’re not ace, they quite probably had crushes on someone and remember what that feels like, too, and may have either dated someone or wanted to date someone. There are also authors - often queer authors - particularly, who didn’t have the same experiences of figuring out crushes/dating/etc, for various reasons. They’re also not bad and dirty for saying “I’d like to write a story where someone - maybe someone like me when I was that age - DOES get that experience”. Which is not to say it’s a self-insert, but people draw on their real life experiences and extrapolate things to write.

I don’t know how to break it to you, but you don’t magically become a completely different person when you hit 20 or 25 or whatever the magical cut-off age for Creepy Bad Adult is in these circles now. You still remember what Scared Confused Overwhelmed 15-year-old feels like, and remember all of the other versions of yourself.
