Hound- a family of dog breeds, known for hunting ability and independent nature; Troglodytes- the species name for the chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes. This is my personal blog, which will reflect my passions for dogs and non-human primates.

Urgent- Commissions!

Hey friends! I've been a bit quiet recently; things have been pretty hectic as I'm preparing for a chimpanzee care and conservation internship in Sierra Leone. I'll be leaving in a few days and I'm equal parts crazy nervous and crazy excited! This will mean, however, that for the next three months, my only source of income will be what I can earn doing art commissions, so if you're thinking of asking me to draw some doggies for you, PLEASE don't hold back! My finances are going to be really tight, so being able to do a bit of commission work will make a massive difference to me.

And some examples of my work- I draw canine characters, and can draw your dog (or cat!) in a cartoony style-

if only there was some easy, free way to keep your cat from being bitten by a venomous snake. if only there was something the humans could have done. not one, not two, but three times this cat has had to go to the vet because he’s been bitten by a snake, and there’s nothing in the world that could stop this or prevent it from happening.

“we thought that this could be it for the wandering cat,” says his owner, less than twenty seconds into the video. “we’ll probably pay it again,” she says of the ten thousand dollar price tag that’s come with this animal’s repeated vet care for envenomation by a snake. tragic, that they have no option other than to let their cat go outside by himself.

if only there was some way to keep the cat out of danger. if only there was a way to keep that domesticated animal away from native wildlife. if only there was some way to maybe… i dunno, let him out on some kind of harness device with… supervision? or maybe just play with him indoors? or perhaps build some kind of enclosure- something like a cat patio? no, that’s impossible. far too advanced. this is the only way.

alas, we will never have that technology.

People who keep non-disabled cats permanently inside shouldn’t own cats.

People who don’t know anything about the dangers to cats, nor the dangers to the environment from cats, shouldn’t spout a bad opinion.

Cats are meant to be outside, socialising, hunting, exploring. Feel free to take all their freedom away, but I’ll be here to say that you’re abusing them.

You are entitled to your opinion. I am entitled to my professional opinion. Being a vet, in Australia and all, working in the city where the cat in the featured article is from.

You wouldn’t let a dog free roam. You’d call that abuse. A cat does not need to free roam, that’s archaic and laughable.

  • They do not need to hunt living things. They can hunt toys, it’s called playing with the cat.
  • They do not socialize like humans do, most cat-cat interactions outside end in a cat fight. By the way, transmission of FIV is a thing.
  • You can take a cat exploring on a harness, or just add variety to their safe, enclosed environment.

A cat certainly does not need to be permitted to free roam and get bitten by a tiger snake, which is more venomous than anything you’d find in the USA, on three separate occasions. If that happened to a dog, or even a child, that would be called abuse instead.

I’m just about giving up. Life is trash. I’m useless and I’m drowning.

WHAT A GREAT POST

Love it!!!

Hey. LIVING COSTS MONEY! How about giving more money to the companies that employ me and MAYBE I MIGHT BE OK

This is such a funny thing to me because in Thai culture, it’s completely normal to live with your parents when you’re an adult. In fact, most people live in their family home until they’re married ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Saaaame in Pakistan dude and being abroad for grad school is really fucking me up I am not built to be even slightly independent 😂

In Western culture (including America!) it was completely normal for people to live with their parents in adulthood–sometimes until they married, sometimes longer.  In America, that changed (for men) in the 1940s and 50s, when it was really really easy for an 18 year old to get a good job that paid more than enough to live a comfortable life on, or to afford college which would then practically guarantee you an even better-paying job.  Women joined the trend of moving out at 18 in the 1960s and 70s.

And now those jobs don’t exist, or are few and far between, and guess what!  People are living with their parents again.  But that 70-year span was just long enough that it fell out of common memory, and now people are seen as “failures” because the economics have changed.

Avatar

A very great deal of Western culture, ESPECIALLY America, is actually still based on a memory of the 40′s and 50′s as the baseline of normalcy despite them being a total fluke at the time. World War II and McCarthyism created a massive shift towards rabid patriotism, Christian fundamentalism and the ideal of the “nuclear family” that resembled nothing before it and we’re still recovering from as the majority of our most powerful politicians are old enough that this period of sudden fanaticism is their “nostalgic good old days” and the way they think things are “supposed to be.”

I love when these posts randomly become tiny history lessons, it soothes me

You know what's underrated? Pigeons. Especially since everyone thinks they're annoying and ugly when Southern crowned pigeons, speckled pigeons, AND NICOBAR PIGEONS exist

we don’t even need to get into fancy breeds here because this pigeon? the common street breed? has probably stolen your sandwich at some point?

FUCKING BEAUTIFUL.

and I’m completely serious. I love how they bounce around and fight the sparrows for fry bits. PIGEONS ARE GOOD AND FUN BIRDS.

Avatar

Pigeons are awesome. Love ‘em. Little feathery sidewalk cleaners. But this morning on one of my deliveries I watched as one walked right in front of traffic as if it was completely oblivious to the world around it. I’ve spent some time around birds and I know better. This little guy walked right into the center of the lane on purpose. Three (3) cars swerved to avoid hitting it. I’m surprised no one tried to hit it, but I’m also not surprised that the pigeon totally did that because it could.

Pigeons, beautiful and spiteful

tumblr is like wading through everyone else’s garbage until you find something good and go “ah. this is good” and take it and display it in your own garbage pile

Did you mean Australian Bowerbird?

We collect pretty rubbish and decorate a nest to attract a mate.

common practices that need to stop

-outdoor cats

-exotic pet ownership ((servals, foxes, coyotes, monkeys, etc))

-vegan diets for carnivorous pets

-obese animals being seen as cute

-”cute” predator/prey interactions ((cats with rodents, snakes with small animals, etc))

-getting pets high

-intentionally putting animals into uncomfortable situations for the sake of it being funny or cute

Feel free to add more.

-fish bowls

-declawing cats

- keeping rabbits in small cages/hutches where they can barely move or stand up on their hind legs

- putting birds in cages that are the wrong size with nothing to play with or drink. Esp those with perches the wrong size for the feet.

-keeping social animals as single pets

-keeping solitary animals in groups

-feeding poor diets bc it’s cheap and you haven’t done any research

-giving your animals no enrichment while expecting them to enrich your own life

-not training your dog

-blaming your animals for doing things that animals just fuckin do

-not taking your animal to the vet when it needs treatment bc “vets are just ripping you off”

My family's dog was kept outside before we got him and he kept escaping our house at first, also he loved hunting cats and raccoons. Naturally we decided it was best to turn him loose outdoors since he clearly wanted to be outside and needed to exercise his natural hunting instincts. Oh no, wait, we improved our fences, kept him away from open doors, trained our animal, and gave him enrichment to stimulate his instincts that don't involve savaging local wildlife because we're not stupid.

as sort of an exception, my cat was born feral and gets noticeably depressed when forced to stay inside. For the sake of her welfare and quality of life I let her be outside as often as she wants. It might be a different story for born and bred domesticated cats but ones who are feral are going to be out there disrupting wildlife anyway. If you adopt a feral kitten I just feel it’s the right thing to make her life good while she’s alive

Nope. No exceptions! There are plenty of people who have cats that lived only outdoors and have adjusted to being indoor cats, it’s likely you’re not providing your cat with the stimulation it needs to be content inside.

If your cat insists on going outside still, then there are plenty ways to do so that don’t involve just throwing your cat out to free-roam and being an irresponsible and lazy pet owner.

You can secure your yard and make it cat escape proof, or build an outdoor cat enclosure, or you can easily leash train your cat and take it for walks.

Insisting your cat is an exception and that free-roaming is good for it, is incorrect and you are putting the life of your cat in danger, as well as the environment, other people and other pets.

There are no exceptions, only lazy pet owners.

I am the very best at marketing. Amazon Goodreads

im honestly gonna get it. you had me at “made a homophobe so angry”

This actually happened! I’ve always felt that if you buy a book where the stated summary is “two princesses attempt to fight dragons and get married” you don’t really have a right to be mad when the book turns out to be about two princesses attempting to fight dragons and get married but what the hell do I know.

To be fair, maybe the reader expected the princesses to marry the dragons?

Please tell me there’s a sequel where that happens.

BUT ONLY IF THE DRAGONS ARE ALSO LADIES.

Actually, the main complaint was that it was “historically inaccurate” for two princesses to be allowed to get married. Which was weird to me, since this story is not set on earth and I’m pretty sure it is historically accurate for gay couples to be allowed to get married on this super convenient wish-fulfillment fantasy world that I concocted after logging 300 hours in Skyrim. Curiously enough, she didn’t complain about the dragons being inaccurate.

I want more women to feel empowered to do this.

Scars from breast cancer can be both hard to hide and embarrassing for some women. I wish they weren’t, because scars mean you’re a fighter and a bad ass.

Women have told me after their mastectomy they felt self conscious about someone seeing their chest. My grandmother wore her false breast (she had only one boob removed) around even the house for a long time. (Of course, now when we were taking about the procedure she asked “want to see my boob?” And had to go fetch it from the other room. It was an interesting conversation to say the least.)

Anyway, breast reconstruction can be expensive, and some women either don’t want it or can’t have it done for various reasons.

But you know what, chest tattoos are easily accessible. There are even tattoo shops that give discounts to women covering up breast cancer scars. And women who no longer have a nipple? You can get a bad ass tattoo

Check out

Their site starts like this:

They host pink day:

Check out some of the work on their site:

You can donate to the organization, or if you know a tattoo artist you can let them know they accept volunteers to be a part of their community of artists.

Here is another badass lady and her bad ass tattoo (found on pinterest)

I am sharing this again because @staff might decide this is “adult content”.

These are cancer survivors reclaiming their bodies.

Banning all “female presenting” nipples ignores a commuity of women who are total bad asses who said “fuck you” to their cancer scars and turned them into art.

Not every image of a female nipple should be sexualized. This is not porn, this is courage and strength.

Are the new regulations going to delete this post. Does a post supporting a cancer survivors violate Tumblr’s community guidelines?

If it does, maybe the guidelines are wrong, and not the post.

Hey @staff, per your guidelines this isn’t explicit content.

Yet this post was flagged. Maybe figure out an appeal process.

I asked for a review and they responded:

So women reclaiming their bodies after breast cancer is “sensitive content” and should be hidden from minors.

Tumblr has some messed up morals.

The only way we’re ever going to solve homelessness is by giving free housing to homeless people.

Not cots in homeless shelters. Not beds in domestic violence shelters. Real, actual, permanent housing, with a door they can lock and the freedom to come and go as they please.

It seems like a stupidly simple solution to an incredibly complicated problem, but this is the only way we’re ever going to end homelessness for good. Everything we’re doing right now is like flinging thimbles of water onto a house fire, and it’s time to call the fire department. Don’t believe me? Consider that:

  • Providing free housing is actually cheaper than what we’re doing right now. Even when you factor in the cost of having round-the-clock mental health staff on hand in housing facilities, giving the homeless housing costs about one-third as much as leaving them on the streets. How is that possible? People who sleep on the streets go to the hospital a whole lot more than anyone else. Being homeless is hard on your health - you are more likely to be assaulted, experience frostbite or heatstroke, or fail to manage a medical condition like diabetes. Homeless people are also more likely to get arrested for minor things like public urination or loitering, and it’s hugely expensive to arrest them, process them, put them in prison and put them through court dates. We save so much money and eliminate so many problems by just giving them somewhere to live.
  • It’s extremely difficult to get a job when you don’t have an address. There’s a huge amount of prejudice against homeless people, and the same people who shout “get a job!” are the first to toss someone’s application in the trash as soon as they see “no fixed address”. Having an address also makes it easier to vote, open a bank account, keep up with your taxes and obey the terms of your probation.
  • Homeless people waste a lot of time standing in line for shelters and services. Shelters have limited space available, and if you want to make sure you have a bed for the night, you need to be there long before the doors open. The same thing applies to soup kitchens. When your whole life revolves around being in line for vital services for hours on end, it’s hard to make much progress in getting your life together. Providing people with housing gives them more time and more flexibility to return to school, find jobs, or reconnect with family.
  • It’s virtually impossible to manage a mental health condition or recover from addiction when you have no permanent housing. It’s just not going to happen. Recovering from a mental health issue requires stability, routine and a safe place to retreat to, which are impossible when you live on the streets. Living rough makes it extremely difficult to show up to appointments, hang on to your prescription medications and avoid trauma. It’s more efficient for everyone involved to provide housing to the mentally ill first, and bring mental health services right to their doors.
  • It’s hard to make much progress in life when you can’t accumulate possessions. Think about how hard your life would be if you had no safe place to store your things. When you’re homeless and sleeping in shelters, you can only keep as much stuff as you can carry with you, and most of your energy is going to go towards keeping that stuff safe. You can’t take advantage of clothing drives, because you can’t carry too many clothes. You eat a lot of fast food, because you have nowhere to store or prepare groceries. Showing up to appointments, interviews or shifts is difficult, because you have to lug everything you own with you to ensure nothing is stolen. Having a room with a lock changes everything.
  • It keeps children out of the foster system. Ending up on the streets often means losing your children - if you can’t provide children with a stable home, that’s grounds to take them away. Families fleeing domestic violence can find themselves re-traumatized when children are placed in foster care due to inadequate housing. Providing stable housing allows families to stay together and minimizes trauma for children and parents, as well as foster care costs.
  • It preserves basic human dignity. It’s hard for most of us to imagine how humiliating and dehumanizing it is to be homeless. Imagine not having access to regular showers, or even toilets. Having nowhere to clean your laundry. Having your schedule dictated by a homeless shelter. Sleeping in rooms with dozens or hundreds of other people, with absolutely no privacy. Being chased out of businesses and public places. Enduring the crushing boredom of having nowhere to go. Being treated as less than human. It’s impossible to maintain hope and dignity in those conditions, and no human being should have to endure that.

We live in a society that treats housing like something you have to “earn” by proving yourself worthy of it, and that toxic thinking has put us in a position where we’re literally willing to spend more money to have people sleeping in the streets. It has to stop. Housing is a bare minimum requirement for human dignity, and it should be a human right. Everyone deserves a safe and private space of their own, regardless of their abilities, mental health or circumstances. No one is asking for luxury condos here - dorm-style settings with private rooms and shared bathroom and kitchen facilities have proven to be effective. This isn’t about who “deserves” housing; if you are a human being, you deserve a safe place to call home.

Hey so @staff it’s really really shitty to flag as explicit a post about my gay uncle who died due to AIDS.

@staff this is unacceptable

Thank you. I didn’t even see a notification - I just came across it while I was scrolling through my blog to see if anything was flagged.

I’m honestly pretty upset about this. It’s also wild considering the history of the AIDS epidemic and how the US government censored PSAs about the epidemic to not mention gay men because it might be seen as endorsing “deviant” behavior. I’m not saying that’s why this was flagged, I’m just saying there’s relevant history here.

Wow. I’m so sorry this happened to your post.

When people ask what we’re so worried about with the new policy this is the answer.

I remember first learning that you can cry from any emotion, that emotions are chemical levels in your brain and your body is constantly trying to maintain equilibrium. so if one emotion sky rockets, that chemical becomes flagged and signals the tear duct to open as an exit to release that emotion packaged neatly within a tear. Everything made sense after learning that. That sudden stability of your emotions after crying. How crying is often accompanied by the inability to feel any other emotion in that precise moment. And it is especially beautiful knowing that it is even possible to experience so much beauty or love or happiness that your body literally can’t hold on to all of it. So what I’ve learned is that crying signifies that you are feeling as much as humanely possible and that is living to the fullest extent. So keep feeling and cry often and as much as needed

SHIT WHAT

Avatar

Also let yourself cry. It really is a biochemical release valve to dump out all the chemicals that make you feel stuff.

I honestly think one reason men in western culture have so many problems is that we don’t let them cry, and literally their brains get stuffed with all this crap that doesn’t have a release valve. Men, please cry. You’ll feel better. It’s ok. You are not lesser for taking care of your health.

This is why tears from different emotions look different under an electron microscope. They’re literally made up of different things.

Happy tears are structurally different than sad tears than angry tears than overwhelmed tears etc.

I looked it up, cuz that tidbit was dope to me and..

Never would have known
