I was just explaining how I saw “To Wong Fu,” in the theaters as a 17 year old with a bunch of highschool friends and absolutely nobody was scandalized. This drag panic is entirely orchestrated and much ado about nothing.

I mean, somebody’s going to mention Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie, or Flip Wilson as Geraldine, but way back in the fifties, Milton Berle was on Texaco Star Theater and your grandparents or great-grandparents loved it.

A reminder that drag is old. It's so old it's ridiculous. Drag has been done in theater since the beginning of theater. And sometimes those characters are supposed to be another gender [Peter Pan is usually played by a small adult woman, and Edna Turnblad from Hairspray is famously a woman's role that's supposed to be cast with a drag queen]. Sometimes it's just a part of the show. [Some Like It Hot, where the two male characters are disguised as women to hide from the mob, and one ends the movie with a wealthy man] Drag queens as a trope have always been sassy, world-weary, and absolutely confident in themselves and their ability to attract men. Hell, sometimes the joke is that they're [deliberately] making a straight male character uncomfortable and we're supposed to be laughing at the straight male's discomfort. Law & Order has shown drag queens for decades with asshole detectives referring to them as "ma'am" when they're in drag even as they're trying to avoid the sequins.

This rhetoric is frightening because of how quickly the neo-fascist movements in the US have managed to get it to take hold.

Have you- have you- guys read "The italian job" by stereobone on ao3? (PROBABLY MY FAV FIC EVER) Well...there's this scene where Miles is kinda repairing the floor so Alex won't get stubbed toes and he's wearing THIS.EXACT.SAME.OUTFIT. there as he is in his last photoshoot!!!!

And the dirt on his hands and shoulders, the fact that he described it as his "farmer look"...I can see it all so clearly. Worned out jeans and a white vest... very much 'Aviation' coded to me.

milex and a poem

i read this poem and shed a few tears because it reminded me so much of them, because it is so them... so i invite you to suffer with me.

Friends with No Benefits, Megan Fernandes, Poem-a-Day, 2023

I now replace desire  with meaning.  Instead of saying, I want you, I say,  there is meaning between us. Meaning can swim, has taken lessons from the river  of itself. Desire is air. One puncture  above a black lake and she lies flat. I now replace intensity with meaning. One is a black hole of boundless appetite, a false womb, another is a sentence. My therapist says children need a “father” for language  and a “mother” for everything else. She doesn’t get that it’s all language. There is no else.  Else is a fiction of life, and a fact of death. That night, we don’t touch.  We ruin nothing.  We get bagels in the morning before you leave on a train,  and I smoke a skinny cigarette and think  I look glam, like an Italian diva. You make a joke at my expense, which is not a joke, really,  but a way to say I know you.  I don’t feed on you. Instead, I watch you  like a faraway tree.  Desire loves the what if, the if only, the maybe in another lifetime.  She loves a parallel universe. Or seven.  Meaning knows its minerals, knows which volcanic magma belongs  to which volcanic fleet. Knows the earth has parents. That a person is raised.  It’s the real flirtation, to say, you are not a meal.  To say, I want you  to last.

I may be completely wrong here but I love to think Miles and Alex agreed on the same melody, topic and structure and then wrote each verse of Used to be my girl in their own style.

If I have to guess who wrote what, I would vote Alex for the first verse and Miles for the second (although they don't sing them) because of the "darling" and the "girl" choice of words 😆

"i lost the money. lost the keys. but im still handcuffed to the briefcase" is such an insane lyric once you realize that tbhc is about alex's struggle with fame. like, he lost everything he enjoyed about making music (the money) and control of his life and the band (the keys) but he cant get out. he cant leave. he will forever be alex turner from the arctic monkeys and he can never do anything else. he's still handcuffed to the briefcase

Hi anon! What an interesting question, thanks for this ask :)

One of my favourite things about Alex is his eccentricity; it was that which first drew me to him as a person/performer. He's so delightfully odd, and I love the way he expresses himself both in words and in movement. I appreciate his dry humour and his intriguing layers of personality. I also admire his care with words and his dedication to the craft of songwriting; his creative process is fascinating to me.

With Miles, I especially admire his determination to succeed and his passion for what he does. I love how down to earth he is, how he always makes time for his fans, and how genuine he seems as a person. When it comes to music, Miles actually gets far more airtime in my kitchen than Alex does, as I just find Miles's tunes way more fun to sing and dance to :)

When it comes to Alex and Miles performing together, it's like a perfect blend of opposites. Miles has this in-your-face energy on the stage; he's vivacious, vibrant and powerful. Alex has a more understated and mysterious aura in comparison; sometimes he performs as though he's lost in his own dream and the audience is only an afterthought. At other times he's eccentically theatrical, and Miles contrasts his shenanigans like a steady anchor.

Of course there are also times where they both egg each other on, and then we're blessed with beautiful Milex chaos 😂

As for their relationship, what I love most is the obvious trust and intimacy between them, and the way they've created their own secret world for themselves. Their connection is so strong that anyone can see it and I think it's beautiful to witness two human beings who are bonded on such a deep level.

Whether their bond is platonic or romantic seems extraneous to the fact that they clearly love each other. I think the existence of Milex proves that love is real :)
