When I arrived in the twentieth vestibule of the fourth western hall for my scheduled meeting with the Other, I found him reclining on a stained, dark green version of the love seat I had taken note of on my journey in the Second Month of the Year I tried Kegstands. The color on this one appeared to derive largely from having seemingly rested in algae-soaked water for some time, and a significant amount of moss. He inhaled the smoke from inside his long, cylindrical, glass object and looked up at me. "Piranesi, do you remember your Major?" I do not mind his usual dedication to his scientific work, but I falter at this. It is as if he has misspoken, or mistakenly ended his sentence a word early. "My major... what?" "Your Major, Piranesi." He looks at me and sets the object carefully down on the ground. I have seen him with it before but neglected to ask about it -- I have speculated whether it is part of a ritual to honor the dead, or medicinal. "I do not understand -- some important... aspect of myself? I consider myself a scientist first and foremo--"

"Do you recall the exploits of Phi Kappa Kappa?"

I pause for a moment, trying to work out what this could refer to, and my first theory causes my heart to skip a beat. "Have you discovered a NAME to associate with one of the animal statues, or one of the fallen Brothers?" He laughs. "No, it's not a mascot or student, it's a -- never mind."

it’s a tragedy that dinotopia was adapted as a weird gritty looking tv movie with bad cgi when it’s, without exaggeration, the most ghibli any book has ever been

It’s high time for a new Dinotopia adaptation (with updated, accurate dinosaurs, as James Gurney would want, of course)

HIGH TIME

friend omg, you are in the lucky 10,000 today because the book is a *joy*

don’t think like, a novel, think like a coffee table book that’s framed like an actual informative guide to the actual place Dinotopia

it’s filled with scrawled notes and observations and gorgeous art from the point of view of a newcomer fascinated by the culture and science and history of this island

it’s so, so cool

there was also an official series of eighteen (non-illustrated) books set in the universe! I never saw the "coffee table" books until long after I'd read most of these, personally.

justin mcelroy picking the one thing we can't go "is that a homestuck reference" at for the time he references people doing that is very funny

like correct me if I'm wrong there's no equivalent for "a basketball reveals it is secretly a sports-themed druid named Elizabeth that casts Water Breathing for the party"? I guess we have sport(singular)-themed leprechauns that have time travel powers, at best. And water breathing is I want to say entirely genetic? I'm drawing a blank on people explicitly casting buffs on others as well.

at risk of normalizing/contributing to imperialism, perhaps, I just misread "US dollars" as an intensifier instead of a descriptor for a second, like US instead of "fucking", like "are you US kidding me" and honestly I wonder if there's something there?

"you're really US pissing me off right now"

"I could use a US break honestly I'm so goddamn tired"
