I love how on display Taylor’s disdain of like. 21st social media culture is in Paris. The gossipy shit-talking that opens the song, the reference to romance not being dead if you keep it. Just. Yours, the privacy sign on her page, the scathing deconstruction of what she means by shade; the contrast of Twitter shade and natural, green shade provided by a real tree, wanting to be somewhere where the culture’s clever, ignoring celebrity gossip for the sake of existing within the real world, the reference to paparazzi contrasted with the lights on the Eiffel Tower…all very relatable, methinks.

bejeweled is so sad underneath all the shininess because she’s really asking if i can’t take his breath away anymore, can i take anyone’s breath away? if i’ve lost his interest, have i lost my spark? so she decides to go find out, and she is still lighting up rooms, but the person she’s with just doesn’t care. does she have a man? she doesn’t know anymore. she sings about sapphire tears on her face, because at the party when she has this realization she can clearly see that what they have needs to end. she lost him as soon as she started questioning how valuable she was to him. but she’s so pretty all dressed up and glittering and sad!
