Hollyand’s Carver/Merrill fics

Hey! I’m hollyand on AO3 and I write Dragon Age 2 fanfiction! I write mostly Carver Hawke/Merrill, Garrett Hawke/Anders [link], and the odd DA2 rare-pair fic. Here are the Carver/Merrill fanfics I’ve posted to Archive of Our Own.

LONG FICS (MULTI-CHAPTERED):

The Courtship of Daisy and Junior (Rated Mature/Explicit):

Following the trip to Chateau Haine with Carver, Isabela hatches a plot to matchmake the templar with Merrill. Varric bets that it won’t work, while Merrill has no idea what’s going on. Will Carver manage to win Merrill’s heart? Or will Isabela lose her bet? (Set near the beginning of Act 2; inspired by party banter between Carver and Isabela in the Mark of the Assassin DLC.) Completed, 64,516 words and 23 chapters long.

A Chance Engagement (Rated Teen and Up, some F!Hawke/Isabela):

Regency AU. When Miss Merrill attends the Kirkwall public assembly ball, the last man she expects to engage in a dance is Carver Hawke – a single man who has just come into possession of a large fortune. This chance meeting, however, sets them both on a path they never expected. Based on Pride & Prejudice. Ongoing, 112,198 words and 55 chapters long.

Modern AU. Garrett Hawke has political ambitions – and one of those involves marrying off his ex-Templar brother Carver, to smooth his promotion to Viscount. Merrill is in modern-day Kirkwall spying (badly) on Hawke on behalf of Keeper Marethari. When Carver and Merrill agree to marry for convenience and later annul the marriage for non-consummation, they might find that maybe, just maybe, all might not go as planned. Completed, 20,920 words and 6 chapters long.

The Templar And The Blood Mage (Rated Explicit; some M!Hawke/Anders):

Carver has finally managed, with Isabela’s help, to get together with Merrill. Being a Templar, however, means he is forced to keep his relationship a secret - a fact that is not helped by the publication of a certain friend-fiction that becomes the Kirkwall version of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’. Also known as Hollyand’s excuse to write lots of smut. (Sequel to “The Courtship of Daisy and Junior”, although I wrote this fic first.) On hiatus, 42,142 words and 9 chapters long.

Merrill discovers she has a templar kink, where she gets off on being Silenced or having her mana drained. Since no-one else seems to want to do “dirty things” with her anyway, she decides Carver will be the man – and the templar – to indulge her. Set mostly during the Mark of the Assassin DLC. Completed, 8,420 words and 3 chapters long.

SHORT FICS (ONE-SHOTS):

Written for two prompt requests for the Black Emporium Rare Pair Fanfic Exchange 2016: “Carver crushing on Merrill, Merrill being obliviously adorable, and Hawke (preferably female) being a huge troll. Bonus points for Varric being Hawke’s backup troll. No smut for this one, just Carver and Merrill fumbling adorably around each other. Happy ending please!” and “Carver pines over Merrill, is really awkward about it, and the rest of the gang tease him mercilessly”. Set in Act 1. One-shot, 2,404 words.

Truth or Dare (Rated Mature):

The crew play ‘Truth or Dare’ over a few drinks at the Hanged Man. Merrill ends up with a forfeit that makes things a little awkward… for Carver, anyway. Set in Act 1. One-shot, 3,470 words.

Do You Wanna Build A Snowman? (Rated Teen and Up):

It snows in Kirkwall, and Merrill persuades Warden Carver – and Fenris and Marian Hawke – to play in the snow with her. Set after DA2; written for the Carver Defence Squad Secret Santa Exchange 2016. One-shot, 1,955 words.

Cupcakes (Rated General/Teen and Up):

Modern AU. Merrill participates in a local baking competition, and everyone is head over heels in love with her special Dalish cupcakes. One of the judges, Carver Hawke, reluctantly attends the event because his mother is the president of the local Baking Society… and might have fallen for more than her baking skills. Written for a Tumblr prompt. One-shot, 2,384 words.

Merrill gets lost in Kirkwall… and accidentally ends up at a ball at the De Launcet Mansion in Hightown. Fortunately for her, she runs into Carver Hawke - and together they formulate a plan to pretend that she is there as his date, while he can secretly spy on Emile de Launcet’s parents for the Knight Commander. What could go wrong? Written for a Tumblr prompt. One-shot, 6,614 words.

Knight Takes Queen (Rated Explicit):

Merrill is a size queen, and only a certain Knight-Corporal of the Kirkwall Templar Order can satisfy her (and give her the creampie of her dreams). One-shot, 4,348 words.

Major Arcana: VIII. Strength (Rated Teen and Up):

From a collection of ficlets based on the cards of the tarot, posted on AO3 as a multi-chaptered fic by accident instead of posting as a fanfiction series. Carver and Merrill sit around a campfire and talk in Act 1. One-shot, 776 words.

Major Arcana: XIII. Death (Rated Teen and Up):

From a collection of ficlets based on the cards of the tarot, posted on AO3 as a multi-chaptered fic by accident instead of posting as a fanfiction series. Grey Warden Carver comforts Merrill after the death of her entire clan. One-shot, 2,043 words.

In the years that follow the Arishok battle, Grey Warden Carver Hawke and Merrill try to write to each other. Epistolary angst fic set in Act 3 written entirely as a series of letters. One-shot, 1,692 words.

Also my All Falls Away edits have been going a lot faster than I expected! I’ve already posted most of the revisions to the early chapters. There’s just one more bit I want to give some more thought to before I encourage people to go read it if you haven’t already. And then for the rest of the story I’ve filled most of the minor place holders already. I just have three missing scenes to write then it should just be minor edits after that. I’m not going to promise anything but it would be cool if I could start posting before the end of the month!

The only missing scenes I have left now are in the final chapter! I feel happy to leave those for a bit while I try and get the earlier chapters ready to post. I sort of feel like it would be wise to put it aside for a bit then come back and reread but I’m also excited by the idea of being able to post it soon so that makes me want to get on with it right away. If anyone is interested in beta reading then let me know because there are a few parts that could probably benefit from me getting a second opinion on them. If you want to know more about the story, the first 10 chapters are here with a summary and tags and everything

pearlclutching about how fanfic is just the horny degenerates genre is really funny to me cause like. im so sorry to be the one to tell you this but ALL art is horny. every single movie, every religious icon, every book you like, theres a high chance theres a weird fetish in it somewhere. you cannot make art without taking a snapshot of your soul and for a lot of people the soul really wants to fuck

in all seriousness fanfic is a lot better than other media if you want to avoid horniness, because at least there people just say right in the tags "this has a weird fetish in it" so the other people with that fetish can find it. if you're watching tv you just have to go for it and hope the director isnt the type to make you stare at miranda cosgrove's feet a lot.

Do you ever like…think about a mage/nonmage ship on a hot, sticky day. The nonmage sweating profusely and cranky, too hot do do anything, snapping at the mage when they try to initiate. Then the mage summons their ice magic…refreshingly icy fingers running through the nonmage’s hair, cold breath swirling across heated skin, kisses like ice-cream. All contrasted by beads of sweat rolling down the nonmage’s back?

Because I sure don’t.

These… these are not now thoughts that haunt me.

Another suggestion-

Cold, snowy nights when a non-mage piles on thick garments and wraps up in blankets to try and keep away the chill. Breath coming out in visible puffs and nose, fingers, and toes like ice… until a swirl of simmering air announces the return of their mage lover. Bringing just enough warmth from flame to defrost chilled hands between their own, and envelop the bedclothes in their own pleasant, snug heat…

I got this comment on a story from my Other AO3 Account this morning.

(Info redacted because I prefer keeping these accounts separate but no one follows me on the side blog I have for that account.)

The story was posted almost a year ago and is relatively “popular” by my average statistics even though it has tropes and themes that are big turnoffs for a lot of people (hence separate accounts). This popularity is undoubtedly because it’s a Marvel Loki story and that fandom is massive.

So there is obviously an algorithm or a bot scrubbing ao3 statistics and leaving this comment on fics that meet a certain metric with the main character of the fic inserted into the comment.

I had a little time to kill this morning so I decided to investigate further. And y’all this is so predatory. Come on this journey with me. It made me mad. It may make you mad.

First, if you go to Webnovel’s website, you HAVE to choose between male lead or female lead stories before you can go any further. WTF?

And that’s weird, but this gets so much worse. This is basically a pay-to-read site that has different subscription models. Which… okay BUT! The authors don’t get paid! Look at that comment again. They’re promising a supportive and nurturing community, but zero monetary compensation. It’s basically, “post your stuff here so we can get paid and you can get… nice vibes?” I mean look at this Orwellian writing:

Using the phrase “pay-to-read model” in the same sentence as “qualitative changes in lifestyles for authors” deliberately makes you think that you can get paid and maybe even make a living on this website. But that’s not actually what it says and authors will not receive one red cent.

Oh but wait, the worst is still to come. In case this breaks containment (which I kind of hope it does) this is where I mention that I’m a lawyer in the US.

I don’t do intellectual property or copyright law but I do read and write contracts for a living. So I went to look at their terms of service. It was fun!

Highlights the first, in which Webnovel gets a license to do basically whatever they want with content you post on their site. This is how they get to be paid for people reading authors’ writing without paying them anything.

Highlights the second, in which Webnovel takes no responsibility for illegally profiting off of fan fic. This all says that the writer is 100% responsible for everything the writer posts (even though only Webnovel is making money from it).

Highlights the third which say that by posting, the author is representing that they have the legal right to use and to let Webnovel use the content according to these terms. So if a writer posts fan fiction and Webnovel makes money from people reading the fan fiction, and the House of the Mouse catches wise, these sections say that that’s ALL on the writer.

So that’s a little skeevy to start off with but the thing that is seriously shitty and made me make this post was that these assholes are coming to ao3. They are actively recruiting people in comments on their fan fiction. And they are saying they are big fans of the character you’re writing about and that they share your interests.

They are recruiting fan fiction writers and giving every impression that you can make money from posting fan fiction on their site and hiding the fact that you absolutely cannot but they can make money off of you while you try, deep in their terms of service which no one but a lawyer who writes fan fic and has some time to kill will read.

I see posts on here regularly from people who don’t understand how this stuff works, don’t understand that they (and others) can not legally make a financial profit from fan fiction. And there are tons of people who will not take the time to dig into the details.

Don’t deal with these bastards. Fuck Webnovel.

I’ve received a few questions about why I write Merrill’s surname as Alerion instead of Sabrae in some of my alternative universe fanfics – so I thought I’d answer them by posting the text of her codex that you receive in Act 1 (upon recruiting her in Dragon Age 2). Yes, she belongs to the Sabrae clan of Dalish elves; but as per the blue highlighted text above, she was born into Clan Alerion before being given to Clan Sabrae when her magic manifested at age 4.

As per the Wiki:

Clans are named for the nobles from the Dales who originally founded the clan. Every Dalish surname preserves a lineage from someone, though not necessarily a clan founder. One noble clan founder could start a clan with some Emerald Knights, who would also pass on their names (e.g. clan founder Sabrae with Emerald Knights Mahariel and Talas). As the Dalish often trade people between each other, not everyone in a given clan is a descendant of its founder, and as such doesn’t necessarily bear their name

We know, for instance, that many people from a clan bear the name of the clan as their surname (e.g. the members of Clan Lavellan all seem to bear Lavellan as their surname, and presumably some in Clan Sabrae bear Sabrae as their surname, although Keeper Marethari’s surname was Talas and she was married to the clan’s Second, Sariel (surname unknown), before he died).

However, we don’t know what surname people born into Clan Alerion take (it’s likely to be Alerion, but could also be something different), so I decided to headcanon Merrill has having a different surname to the rest of Clan Sabrae and being named after the clan she was born into, instead.

Happy Friday! For DADWC “ …on a scar?”

'And this one?' Anders asked, lightly tracing a half-faded line across Hawke's abdomen, making him twitch and squirm away, chucking.

'Mm, I think that one was on the way out of Lothering.'

Anders tensed slightly. The Blight was something neither of them spoke about very much, least of all Hawke regarding that terrible journey. He'd almost lost family then, near the end of it - a near miss he'd recounted only once to Anders in full and the awful faraway gaze on him was something the mage didn't care to ever see again. It was a dreadfully familiar look.

But Hawke seemed unfazed, something wry in the twist of his mouth, but otherwise his eyes sparkled with a little humour.

'Someone thought it would be clever to dig a pit trap outside their front door, best bloody disguised thing I'd ever seen. Stakes were dull as shit though,' he added, holding his hand over Anders' where his own still rested. 'Thank the Maker for that. Carver almost laughed himself sick; you'd have thought there weren't 'spawn over the next hill, he about pissed himself.'

Anders snorted. As hard as it was to imagine Carver laughing about anything, he could well believe it considering what he'd seen of the brothers' relationship.

'I'm glad anyway,' he offered, lifting his and Hawke's hands away to plant a kiss on the faded scar. 'Means I get a chance to ask him about the look on your face when your foot went through the ground,' he grinned wickedly, and yelped when Hawke flipped them over, mock-growling at him.

Anders didn't get to ask Carver until much, much later the next day.

Hey hey! Are y'all expecting to host another event for 2023? Just trying to figure out what to look forward to. I participated in one a couple years ago and had a great time! Hopefully I can get in on the next event!

Hi Ocean! No, this year I do not intend to run the Handers-time exchange for several reasons, namely that I do not have the time to give the exchange the attention it deserves. That being said, there are several Handers & Anders related exchanges that Anders fans may be interested in taking place over the next few weeks!

The Rebel Hearts mhanders zine is gauging interest from artists and authors in participating - signups will be opening soon judging from their schedule.

The Secret Sanders Summerbang will be running from May 1st-September 1st (here's the link) - this is open to any Anders ship.

If I see any Anders events I will continue to reblog them here to promote them and raise awareness, but otherwise, see you guys in 2024!
