Congratulations to @melvillean (aka “Andrew”) for spotting the easter egg in the official trailer for UP HERE (aka @uphereonhulu). PREMIERING MARCH 24! Paris Review 141 was my first publication, back in Winter 1996. A shot story called “Ghosting,” one of the two I ever published. I had met @elizabeth_gilbert_writer once before this happened, but this was how we really got to know each other: laughing like crazy about something at one of George Plimpton’s house parties. Maybe we were laughing about the fact we were even there. Liz has written LOTS of short stories, all of them GOOD, and especially this one, “The Famous Torn and Restored Lit Cigarette Trick.” You can read it on the @parisreview website if you’re a subscriber (you should be). You can also read mine, but they really shouldn’t charge for it. Not worth it. ANYWAY, when I learned that UP HERE was building a 90s book store set for Mae’s character to work in, I said they better be selling MY books there. Author’s reflex. Then one day Tommy Kail told me to go look in the fake bookstore. I walked through the real fake door, and saw Paris Review 141 on the counter. The only one my printed things that could chronologically make sense being there. I don’t know where he and @almitra, the Production Designer, found it. I only have two copies left of it myself. But there it was. OK, I cried. That was about 10 lives ago, and don’t think I don’t know how lucky I am to have lived every one of them. And been able to share them with so many interesting and kind people. DOUBLE ANYWAY, Andrew was the first to spot it, so I’m sending him a WEIRD DAD shirt and sticker from the @MaxFunHQ store as promised. And I’m also sending him my second to last copy of Paris Review 141. It was good to dig them out again. I found an old card from my mom in one of them, and an old Writers House mailing label in the other with the words “I OWE YOU TEN BUCKS” on it in my handwriting.
