Brief thoughts on AI writing/art data-scraping and subsequent content production, & the conclusion I've come to.
Thought #1: There has been a lot of discussion about how AI is or is not art theft (or writing theft); from my understanding every model works slightly differently. What isn't up for debate, though, is that all AI models require data to function, and that data has to come from somewhere. The companies developing AI have a strong incentive to get data by any means possible; the internet is the easiest place to start, but there's no way to get permission from every single person who has ever put something on the internet for the use of that thing to develop the AI, even if every single person were inclined to give it.
Conclusion #1: Doesn't matter if the AI's output is a copyright violation; instead, it was a violation of copyright to feed that data to the AI in the first place, making the AI itself inherently legally problematic.
("BRIEF" DO NOT @ ME OKAY. SEE BELOW FOR THE REST OF MY BIG ASS ESSAY. I WILL REBLOG WITH THE SHORTEST TL;DR I CAN MANAGE.)
- AI content generators are inherently legally problematic because they require massive amounts of data to develop, and a lot of that data is stolen.
- I do not believe AI development can be stopped at this point, and trying to prevent data-scraping through technological means is probably futile.
- Companies will be trying to use these AI content generators to replace human labor, including/especially human creative labor.
- As far as I can tell, the only thing really standing in the way of that is that currently, USAmerican legal precedent says AI-generated content cannot be copyrighted. Unfortunately, companies will probably fight to change that.
- We should work to prevent companies from changing the law to make AI-generated work copyrightable by: → making copyright & legal complaints if it seems that anything we have made might have been data-scraped, → throwing a fit if a social network or website we use offers its data up to an AI company, → educating people about how AIs use stolen data and have the potential to do harm, and; → by making it clear we think it fucking sucks.
I like to think he’s actually got a lot of admirers...

“You don’t want to know.”

How I made reference pictures for the lighting on my last DNAngel piece... gotta make do with what you got!
I know we all have ridiculous reference pics and contorted selfies in our ref archives, but taking pics of floppy soggy paper in a mug definitely... had me reflecting on my life choices
