Who else grew up on Enid Blyton instead of Harry Potter?

I can’t be the only one!

Raise your hands if Mr Whatzisname, The Saucepan Man, Mr. Moonface, fairies, pixies, gnomes, goblins, brownies, toadstools, smugglers, treacle tarts, St. Clare’s, Mallory Towers, midnight feasts, Mam'zelle, Famous Five, Amelia Jane, Those Dreadful Children, Mr. Galliano’s Circus, and The Wishing Chair were part of your childhood! :D

cops on Queer Eye:

  • are openly tr*mp supporters with a MAGA hat that they let the fab 5 find
  • their idea of a prank is pulling over a gay black man for no reason and scaring him into thinking he’s about to be brutalized by the police or even killed with his friends clearly expressing their concern for him to even get out of the car when the cop asked
  • when Karamo tries to tell them that it wasn’t funny to try that kind of joke in the current political climate the cop tries to switch it to a “but not all cops are bad cops and we get discriminated against too” conversation

firefighters on Queer Eye:

  • try to raise money with a community fundraiser to properly train other firefighters
  • let the fab 5 hose them down in wet t-shirt contest
  • let Jonathan give them a little spa day with foot soaking and face masks
  • take dance classes for said fundraiser and even willingly learn a couple Magic Mike dance moves
  • their idea of a prank is to startle Tan with an exploding pen
  • the hot white one let’s Karamo crush all over him and call him Superman the whole time without any hesitation

questions men should ask themselves more often

- am i being unnecessarily forceful/loud?

- am i talking over others? are those others mostly women?

- why does this person feel like that? how can i acknowledge their feelings?

- does she seem comfortable around me? if not, why?

- am i devaluing women as a joke/when they make me angry? am i insulting women’s appearance and sanity whenever they make me angry?

- am i listening to other people’s knowledge/experiences or am i only talking about my own? how can i share my knowledge/experiences in a respectful way that doesn’t monopolize conversation or infantalize others (primarily women)?

Do you ever think about the fact that the US has created and legitimized a system of institutionalized inequality by funding schools through property taxes?  That basically a child’s education is only as good as the value of the property in their neighborhood.  Funny how education is so often viewed as an equalizing factor when there is nothing equal about it.

I really don’t care if I’ve already reblogged this

Because this needs to be reblogged….

I remember learning this for the first time as an adult. I had grown up thinking education was the great playing field leveler. So I was so furious to find out how very much it wasn’t anything of the kind.

This is a big part of why you’ll often see rich white people fussing about school district lines, because they hate the idea that their money is going towards the education of poor children.

^^^^^^^ BINGO!!!!!

Giethoorn in Netherlands has no roads or any modern transportation at all, only canals. Well, and 176 bridges too. Tourists have to leave their cars outside of the village and travel here by foot or boat by. So you can probably imagine how peaceful it is here.

“skip dinner and become thinner” more like “skip dinner and you have an eating disorder please get help”

“a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips” more like “a moment on the lips is okay to have, please take care of yourself in this lifetime”

“every time you eat you delay becoming skinnier” more like “every time you eat you give your body the nutrients it needs in order to survive, please keep surviving”

“you’ll be able to wear whatever you want when you get to your ugw” more like “you’ll be able to wear whatever you want now because fashion =/= weight”

“Don’t reward yourself with food your not a dog” more like treat yourself because you’re amazing and deserve happiness

This is actually really helpful thanks

I love this post for how it politely demolishes destructive pro ana/mia mantras i love it

“if you can pinch an inch” congrats you have skin and flesh like all humans

I… I… thanks… for sharing this cause I needed a lot.. hopefully anyone who follows me and needs can benefit from it too…

I really wish this was a thing I saw a few years ago, but I’m glad it’s circulation is moving strong. Just like you my wonderful followers <3<3<3 be brave darlings, I believe in you

Take care of yourself, guys. Eating is good for you, your body needs it or it will shut down. If you feel like you need to get healthier or lose weight, there’s tons of ways you can do that, that doesn’t put your body in danger. NEVER STARVE YOURSELF

i just read a washington post article on romcoms aging poorly due to the pushiness (and oft-stalkery conduct) of the male characters therein, and it got me thinking about pride and prejudice, and specifically darcy saying, “one word from you will silence me on this subject forever.”

because, like, that’s the seldom-portrayed romantic dream in the patriarchal hellscape that is our world, isn’t it?

a dude being willing to say, “i understand if you don’t feel the same way about me, and i’ll leave you alone forever about this if my attention is unwanted.”

so simple, yet so wonderful in its basic human decency

and dudes to this day wonder why women still swoon over darcy

Note also: Elizabeth turns down Darcy’s first proposal, and in the process, accuses him of doing some stuff he did not do (and also some stuff he totally did).

The next day, he surprises her on her walk. He hands her a letter, asks that she read it, and then takes off.

When this happened to me after I had turned someone down IN REAL LIFE, the letter contained a passionate argument to the tune of “actually you’re wrong and you do like me and you should go out with me” and it was creepy af.

Darcy’s letter to Elizabeth starts with: “Be not alarmed, Madam, on receiving this letter, by the apprehension of its containing any repetition of those sentiments, or renewal of those offers, which were last night so disgusting to you”. He goes on to set the record straight about the stuff he didn’t do (as well as the stuff he did) which is *actually relevant* to Elizabeth. And he, as promised, doesn’t romance her further.

It’s totally bizarre that even now, this can be considered unusually great dude behaviour.

Darcy’s first proposal: “You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”

Darcy’s second proposal: “One word from you will silence me on this subject forever.”

His whole arc in the book is about learning to consider other people’s feelings and not just his own, but the fact that it’s expressed via who gets to talk and who is told to shut up is so, so telling. The first time around, he imposes his voice on her whether she wants it or not. The second time, he asks how she feels, and in exchange, offers her the gift of his silence.

And yeah, the fact that dudes still! have! not! learned! this! lesson! is exhausting.

How surprising is it that Pride and Prejudice was written by a woman, when many romantic comedies are produced and directed by men?

Answer: not at all

200 years later and the world is still full of guys who think they’re a Mr Darcy when they’re actually a Mr Collins.
