“…the sight of Elon Musk charging towards Wikipedia with his trademark guile and delicacy was so predictable that it was almost relaxing. He saw a collective resource that people prized and he wanted to hurt it.”
Thoth knows Wikipedia’s not perfect, but I’d sooner have it handy than not have it.
Hey, you know how we spent 7.99 at Tumblr for useless blue checkmarks mainly to spite Musk? Maybe we should go donate the same amount to Wikipedia out of spite. And also because Wikipedia is far more useful than the accurately-named useless blue checks.
I mean, same spite, but actually getting something in return? Sounds like a deal to me...
GO DONATE TO WIKIPEDIA BEFORE ITS TOO LATE
you know that Wikipedia's existing level of donations is already far more than they need to keep the site running, right
most of it goes into either A) a growing emergency fund or B) pissed away in donations to random irrelevant shit that doesn't do anything
gobsmacked at the implication that we don't get anything out of buying blue checkmarks
unlike wikipedia, the money you give to tumblr goes towards keeping the site up and running
they're talking about Twitter Blue
which does actually come with some benefits and probably helps the site run slightly less in the red (though it's Twitter, so how much this matters depends on how much of a shit you give)
what Wikipedia actually needs is competition and an egg in the face
lynati specifically mentioned the tumblr checkmarks
oh right, missed that part
you get more in return from pissing into this blue hellhole than you do lining Wikimedia's pockets
Sad to see that people are increasingly unable to recognise the value of things like Wikipedia, but seem to know the price of everything right down to the cents.
Knowledge does more, than "pissing into this blue hellhole" will ever do, as you've put it.
But I am curious, though: What exactly do you think it is that we are getting out of the - sarcastically named - Blue Important Checkmarks here on tumblr, than we would by helping Wikipedia run its servers as well?
knowledge filtered through layers of bureaucracy and bias deprecates severely in value. it's not worthless by any means, but worth much less than it would be otherwise
Tumblr gives us comedy, discourse, and community. Wikimedia gives us very narrow perspectives on any topic that's remotely controversial, and falsehoods presented as truth just because enough "reputable sources" have repeated the same series of lies. It's a news aggregator wearing the coat of an encyclopedia; the only service it provides is convenience.
as I said earlier in the thread, Wikimedia doesn't need any more donor money. it needs formidable competition, since it's gone basically unopposed for like, 20 years
