Tags collection (including my own), because this shit is infuriating.

tl;dr from the video:

this is a product being marketed as eco-friendly/sustainable/recycled and sold for a high price tag.

when taken apart the faux leather is basically a plastic coating (to give the outer leather texture) on a cloth core, with a thin layer of fuzzy leather dust glued on the inside (to give the inner leather texture)

it is very similar to existing faux-leather products, but with a marked up price

the thing about working as a housekeeper is that sometimes I will be called to clean a room that is in such a state that it gives me pause.

The thing about being a housekeeper at a Hospital is that it is not the things that would usually be concerning that leave me with questions.

Like if I go clean a room and it is just covered in blood, I'm not all "where did all this blood come from" that would be silly. It came from inside the patient and they were already in a hospital so they're probably mostly fine hopefully.

In fact "Inside the patient" is where most of the potentially concerning stuff I have to deal with comes from. Vomit? That's from inside the patient. Urine? Feces? Inside the patient baby. Needles full of unidentified drugs? That was supposed to go inside the patient but I guess they frogot.

But when I go to clean a hospital room and it is full of Sand... Did that come from inside the patient? I hope not. Why is there so much sand? Where did it come from? Was there some kind of terrible beach accident?

I have many questions and I'm scared of the answers.

Mighty Boosh / Slavic folklore 2!

Did you know that the czech folk creature Vodník (Water Goblin) is actually similar to Old Gregg?

He can be a comical character in a green suit and red boots, or he can be a fucking scary monster who drags innocent women underwater and forces them into marriage (and murders their babies aaand others). And he collects souls in cute little silly chubby mugs and stores them in his underwater home. Likes to smoke his pipe in the willow tree by moonlight, is often associated with water fairies (or mermaids) and can be actually quite nice

vodník

Vodník or Vodyanoy is a slav folklore creature. It's said to be a water demon, pulling people underwater when they get too close and using them as servants. He's said to capture souls in mugs and wear a coat with a pair of leather shoes, he's incredibly cruel but somehow beloved by people. i painted him with a pond of dead fish, yknow to signify le climate change and what le impact it has on le culture

I used to be able to understand 99% of the dialogue in Hollywood films. But over the past 10 years or so, I've noticed that percentage has dropped significantly — and it's not due to hearing loss on my end. It's gotten to the point where I find myself occasionally not being able to parse entire lines of dialogue when I see a movie in a theater, and when I watch things at home, I've defaulted to turning the subtitles on to make sure I don't miss anything crucial to the plot.

Knowing I'm not alone in having these experiences, I reached out to several professional sound editors, designers, and mixers, many of whom have won Oscars for their work on some of Hollywood's biggest films, to get to the bottom of what's going on. One person refused to talk to me, saying it would be "professional suicide" to address this topic on the record. Another agreed to talk, but only under the condition that they remain anonymous. But several others spoke openly about the topic, and it quickly became apparent that this is a familiar subject among the folks in the sound community, since they're the ones who often bear the brunt of complaints about dialogue intelligibility.

TLDR:

its hard to hear words in movies because

1. directors like Christopher Nolan record fuzzy dialogue to make it more "realistic"

2. actors mumble or whisper to act their characters, and making it louder can't usually make the words clear in the finished movie

3. microphones have to be placed away from visual setpieces so they can't be seen in the finished movie, making it harder to put them where they can record the best audio

4. sound designers not being respected and time crunches with production mean they're often told to "fix it in post" (while editing the film) instead of being allowed to record good audio

5. people add extra sounds because they can add them easier now

6. working on a movie for so long means you can get so used to hearing the fuzzy words correctly that you don't realize other people can't understand it

7. sometimes movies are released too loud, and so movie theaters turn down the volume for all movies, making normal-volume movies too quiet

8. movie theater employees are more inexperienced and play the movie as it is originally, instead of making sure it sounds good like they did when they used projectors

9. some streaming platforms compress the audio too much, making it low quality and too hard to understand

10. tvs also sometimes change how the audio sounds

11. not all films have their sound changed by the people making it to sound good on a home tv

the article ends by talking about ways to fix all this, mostly by educating people about why sound design is important

"We call it vff," said the alien. "It's - it's hard to describe to a species without vffsense. Imagine trying to describe light to a species that never evolved eyes. But there are forms of life that are only perceptible with vffsense, and they've visited Earth and fed on life as long as it's existed here."

There was a pause.

Then the human said, "That's the worst thing you've ever said."

"Don't worry about it."

"I think I have to, now."

"No, because - well - you have a species of spider which pretends to be an ant, correct? It's not capable of understanding the fact that it's mimicking an ant, but it instinctually mimics an ant in order to deter predators."

"Sure?"

"Humans produce a vff to mimic varths, predators only perceptible through vffsense. The organisms that would like to feed on you are terrified of varths, and so they leave you alone. You aren't aware you do it, you don't have the capacity to understand you're doing it, but you evolved to instinctually do it to deter predators you can't see."

There was a pause.

Then the human said in a very soft and thoughtful voice, "And are there varths on Earth?"

"Yes," said the alien. "Everywhere. But don't worry about it."

reblogged

since tumblr is removing icons on the side of posts on the dashboard i think they should also remove them inside the posts

and then they should change the way the reblogs look so that each addition is below and on the left of the previous one so that it makes a sort of stairs shape

maybe they could even underline every username!

oh and they should also add vertical lines for every reblog, i think it would look cool

and if there's a ton of reblogged additions they should make the first few ones all squished and stuff to the point where every letter has it's own line and you're just reading words vertically
