My To-Do list for 2020
“Nonviolent resistance scholar Erica Chenoweth explains the key ingredients of successful social movements.”
1. Aidy Bryant. “Comedian and actress Aidy Bryant is one of the youngest people ever hired on Saturday Night Live. She is a fan favorite and plays a wide range of hilarious roles (our favorite is “Lil Baby Aidy”). She gets asked regularly about how her size affects her career and her life (and occasionally openly ridiculed for it), and she is consistently positive.
In an interview for Bust magazine in Oct. 2015, she said, “I had a sense that I was different. I felt like what made me different is what made me prom queen. I’ve been lucky to, thus far in my life, feel like my size or my personality are assets to me that made me unique from the pack. And so far it’s been pretty easy for me to keep that perspective as opposed to being ashamed of those parts of myself.” We love this perspective. While Aidy isn’t defined by her size or shape, she owns it as one of her characteristics that has made her who she is.”

Bloomberg reported yesterday that if Sen. Sanders implemented his highly progressive tax plan, billionaires could face an effective income tax rate of up to 97.5%. This will be met with complete apoplexy amongst the ruling-class, but, apart from the fact that it is entirely correct that governments use punitive tax regimes to discourage socially destructive behaviour such as ruthless exploitation and wealth hoarding, let’s put it in perspective.
If Jeff Bezos was hit by a 97.5% wealth tax (by comparison, Sanders’ planned wealth tax is pegged at just 8%), he would still be a billionaire. After a 97.5% wealth tax, he would still sit atop a hoard of almost $3.75bn. His fortune currently stands at roughly $108,200,000,000. The tax from he alone would enable the federal government to wipe the debt of a million students (c. $50bn), to train half a million new grad nurses (c. $25bn), to pay the entire education budget of the five lowest spending states for a year (Utah + Idaho + Arizona + Oklahoma + Mississippi = c. $24bn) - and still, still have enough spare change to double federal spending on energy efficiency and renewable energy ($4bn).
And that’s just one big fish.
Put in that sort of context there is simply no moral justification for any individual to have the private enjoyment of the sort of wealth that could seriously adjust the social outcomes of a entire nation’s working-class.
Pitchforks are an extremely moderate and conservative reaction.
Reminder: Our Ancestors are not necessarily role models
More accurately they are:
- Here to help us not repeat their mistakes - Part of History (often a darker era) - Cautionary Tales - Road maps of Humanity’s evolution as a species.
Their beliefs, their laws, and their decisions are not always things to aspire to.
That goes for recent ancestors and more distant ones.
Example: - I am one of the closest dependents of one of the most notorious outlaws in history - My ancestors kept slaves - My ancestors voted against abolition - My ancestors would have had horrible beliefs about women - My ancestors would have had even worse ideas about medicine and science. - My ancestors believed in a skewed form of Justice.
Our Ancestors are not necessarily meant to be put on a pedestal of perfection. They are to be respected, for we wouldn’t be here without them. But they mean for us to learn from them. Many stick around to guide and teach their descendants. But do not be so enamored with the past that you fail to see or observe the evolution of mankind and our ability to be better than they were.
