My brother was diagnosed with depression years before I was, and because of that he started therapy years before I did.

I still remember when I was a young teen and he was playing a Nirvana song and he stopped it at this one line: “I miss the comfort of being sad”

He told me that when you start to get better, there’s a part of you that misses being sad and that if you start feeling that way you have to be extra extra aware and careful because if you indulge the feeling you’ll go down a self-destructive spiral

And even though that was years and years ago, I think about it all the time. Especially when I’m reading discourse on the idea of getting so attached to mental illness as an identity that you don’t want to improve things because you feel safe in it and don’t know who you are without it

I always think of that line “I miss the comfort of being sad” and my brother’s warning

idk how many people i’ve known growing up in texas whose parents speak fluent spanish but they don’t speak a lick solely because their parents were afraid or told not to teach their children. it’s unspeakably common and doesn’t in any way shape or form diminish someone’s claim to or pride in their heritage.

Photos from a gay wedding near Philadelphia, PA, taken in 1957. The owner of the drugstore where these images were developed deemed them inappropriate and never returned them to the grooms. ​60 years later, the photos were found, though archivists have been unsuccessful at locating any of the men pictured.

Imagine withholding wedding photos “for being obscene” when all that is happening is dancing, embracing and kissing because it was a gay wedding. Those are some bizarre values and decision making right there. That is such narcissism over a non-issue level reason to withhold wedding photos. Shame on that person forever.

Too “inappropriate” to return to the grooms, but somehow not too “inappropriate” for him to keep for himself. Right.
