gaslight gatekeep get sniped

sure, "I'm part of this marginalized group that I'm writing about" isn't a get out of jail free card for all bigotry, but if someone says "I'm portraying an exact experience I've had, this literally happened to me" and your response is "okayyy but think of the optics of showing that that happens? maybe keep that to yourself?" it might be time to reconsider your approach.

the christian concepts of repentance and sin are genuine soul poison

wow i wonder if perhaps there is some fundamental difference in the role that christianity and judaism have played in world history vis-a-vis the religions adopted and perpetuated and therefore shaped by the forces of global imperialism, or some kind of history of cultural perception of judaism, that would make a blanket condemnation of judaism raise red flags in the way a blanket condemnation of christianity doesn't. much to think about

having cash is like having secret money. like whos gonna find out i’m buying tacos with this crisp $20 bill??? not my bank account, that’s for sure

That’s literally why the government wants to stop it

Defend cash. The existence of a cash economy  is so so necessary for the survival of every population that the government wants to kill. Homeless people, sex workers, undocumented people, addicts. They all need cash to survive.

#i genuinely can’t remember the last time i used cash but i’m firmly against a cashless society

Not gonna call out anyone by name (and don’t go into the notes bothering this person either) but like: this is not how that works. If you’re firmly against a cashless society: USE CASH.

Shops and services will not continue to keep cash around for the 1% of people whose survival depend on it. They will keep cash around if their system shows that a lot of customers pay in cash.

If you want to keep cash around, literally the best thing you can do is use cash.

“the end goal of fiction is (of course) to collectively identify and consume only the good things. good stories make you a good person and bad stories make you a bad person” you guys literally sound like the 2nd grade teacher who told my mom not to let me read the golden compass

not to swing the bat 360°, but i’ve seen a lot of weird, condescending nonsense on the other side of this as well

look, the end goal of strong literacy skills isn’t to have perfect taste and be right all the time. i frequently enjoy things that have objective flaws. i frequently fail to enjoy things that most people would consider flawless. sometimes, i fall for propaganda. sometimes, something makes me uncomfortable, or confused, and i have to pause to figure out why. that’s life!

the more comfortable you are navigating the relationship between what a story wants to say, what it is saying, and how that affects you, the easier your life will be. you are free to criticize the things you love and celebrate the existence of the things you hate.

i say this with all the compassion of a person who went through years of therapy for OCD—your gut reactions do not define you, and you don’t have to worry about The Bad Media turning you evil

This feels like one of those pieces of advice that are so brilliant that as soon as you have read it, it feels blindingly obvious.

It is very good advice !! Tho if you aim for cartoonish drawings as a result you might need a last step which is combining the first drawing of a shrimp you did with your end result. because the first drawing you did is the result of what your brain think a shrimp core is, and was fed by a life of simplified shrimp in media you’ve seen. it has the sign that people revognize as shrimp.

BUT your study drawing and the end result of that exercise has all the detail that make people think « yes this shrimp is well done! » and is on point ! Which is awesome !

however if your style is cartoonish you cant just throw a realistic shrimp in the middle it will show like those close up screen on nickelodeon shows so don’t hesitate to merge the first and final result if this exercise.

"humans are naturally selfish and evil" factoid actually just statistical error. former united states president ronald w. reagan,

Looking at the DN timeline right now and. Misa’s parents are violently murdered in front of her on the 19th of May, 2003. She then is almost murdered by a stalker on 2nd of February, 2004. She meets Light FOUR MONTHS LATER. So actually yeah I think all of Misa’s actions make complete sense when we like lay it out on the time line. Like I’ve always kinda known this in the back of my head but CHRIST these things happen in a much shorter time frame than I thought!

compulsory abledness also (partially) explains why disability aids are forced onto some people and denied from others

prosthetic limbs are forced onto amputees whether they want them or not because the goal is to make disabled people look as abled as possible. whereas, all sorts of people who would benefit from mobility aids are often denied them until it’s a “last resort” because! you guessed it! the goal is to make us look as abled as possible

neither person in this situation is privileged. it’s just that the same harmful phenomenon impacts different groups in different ways

And if they can’t make us look abled they don’t want to see us at all. I refer of course to the “you can only have a mobility aid if you need it inside the house - we don’t care if you starve to death and never see a doctor again because you can’t leave the house” standard policy of US insurance companies towards mobility aids.

Today I saw a pic of a baby cowbird next 2 its nest "parent" and it was so much bigger!!!!! Which is the sort of thing that gets normal people upset about the injustice of nest parasitism but makes *me* worry if baby cowbirds get bird dysmorphia

This (from Cornell Labs via Merlin) is the pic I was looking at. It's just a little baby but it's so much bigger than its "parent"!!!! Do baby cowbirds feel isolated? Do they understand they're a different bird, or are they just a really bad sparrow?

hey, good news! ecologists have been studying this very thing! it seems young cowbirds have some kind of innate sense that leads them to sneak out of their foster nest at night to hang out in grasslands where they—more often than not—meet other cowbirds and learn more about what they really are.

Thanks I am going to cry so hard I throw up ;-;

This is why fat shaming can have tragic consequences.

If this sort of weight-based medical bias happens to any of y'all, politely tell the doctor (during your visit) that you want them to write in your file that they are refusing ordering tests for you because of your current weight. This usually causes them to order the test anyways because they do NOT want a malpractice suit. Remember: You want to make a paper trail to hold them accountable.
