The journey of

@haveievermentioned / haveievermentioned.tumblr.com

A Catholic, fangirl, author. https://archiveofourown.org/users/madammina/works

“Mother Teresa established hospitals but when she got sick herself she went to much higher-end facilities,” yeah, and people who establish soup kitchens go to restaurants.

Actually, the Missionaries of Charity largely establish hopsices, orphanages, and homes for people for who no one else cares. She never intended to replace any medical systems, but rather she cared for people systems had already rejected, like dalits and HIV/AIDS victims (especially in India and Ethiopia)

She also denied them medicine, refused to give away condoms even in HIV-ridden areas and thoroughly believed that suffering through the worst symptoms is good for the soul

- not having + not being allowed to distribute + needing to ration medicine =\= denying.

- Yeah. Catholics don’t distribute condoms. Or artificial birth control. Contraception isn’t healthcare.

- Catholicism teaches that offering up your suffering is good for the soul. Mother Teresa affirmed that, but it doesn’t justify inflicting/causing or refusing to alleviate suffering. If her belief in the redemptive power of suffering meant that she wasn’t providing aid she was an absolute idiot for working herself to the bone instead of just leaving people to suffer on their own.

She received millions in donations and a fucking Nobel prize

Stop making excuses

Money which went towards the work of over 4,000 sisters and 500 missions in 100 countries. She doesn’t need excuses made for her, that’s the whole point.

She created an alternative to people being abandoned to die on the streets. Period. Not a solution to every single problem in the world. You only hate her for being Catholic.

Oh, and speaking of her Nobel prize. She choose not to attend the banquet and asked that the money for the feast be used to feed the homeless of Olso instead.

So stop making exuses for slandering her.

what farming items in mmorpgs has taught me: i used to think using ice trays to make ice cubes was free but after thinking about it i have to pay the electric bill to power the freezer so every moment that i’m not freezing new trays of ice cubes is a moment that i’m underutilizing the freezer and increasing the cost of ice cubes. i have to constantly swap out ice trays for new ice cubes on an hourly rotation on a 24 hour basis or else i won’t produce the maximum amount of ice cubes possible and will underutilize the full potential of my electric bill. i need to stop using all other appliances and utilities in my home to make more ice cubes

Climate crisis is coming for all of us. We need to vote for people who are not insulated from reality via donor bribes.

We need a robust EPA. The current Supreme Court wants to end the EPA and Federal power to regulate our air and water. Never forget.

Get involved. Vote.

The air quality that is so shocking in New York is identical to the air quality I grew up with in Los Angeles. The EPA and the AQMD changed all of that, and I don't ever want anyone to have to experience what I did. It was awful. We must insist on strong environmental laws and severe penalties for those who break them. We owe it to our kids.

shoutout to all the lesbians/transmascs who went to the hairstylist at 12-14 asking for dyke/masc short hair and came home looking like karen from the HOA

Shout out to all the transfems and gnc guys who tried to grow out their hair without knowing how to care for it and ended up looking like the front man of a Christian rock band

The "Americanization of the global internet" post and slow deterioration of local native culture gave me an idea: many users don't even know there is native language communities on this website, so if you know of a regional group/"subculture" on Tumblr, reblog/comment with the tags they use so people can find them and connect with other folks from their countries or speakers of a language they'd like to learn

With convergent evolution it's always "thylacine" this and "ichthyosaurs" that. Which is valid. But I'm really losing my mind over what's happening with the yellow-throated longclaw and the eastern/ western meadowlark.

These two are separated by over 15 million years of evolution, in two distinct families. What is it about this specific plumage that it was hit upon twice in nearly identical iterations.

seeing everyone just mindlessly sign up for threads despite all the clear warning signs feels like I’m living in Sailor Moon or a magical girl anime episode where the Monster of the Day just set up shop over night and their product is literally draining your lifeforce for the Dark Kingdom but people keep going there

Im not a parent, but I know that so many issues with kids misbehaving could be solved by giving them a simple task to complete instead of just yelling “stop” until they cry

Over the summer I went to an art museum with my S/O and their son (age 10). The son wasn’t as engaged as we’d hoped, but also we probably should have known.

He whined about and my S/O said “we went to legoland for you, this is for us adults” which is fine, but that didn’t stop him from whining about.

Immediately jumping into teacher mode, I pulled out my notebook and a pen and I said “hey, every time we stop to look at a painting for a while, I want you to draw it.” He didn’t draw a single picture. I showed him how to do it, still didn’t draw a single picture…but he also stopped whining. He couldn’t complete the task, but his focus was taken away from “I don’t want to be here” and was transferred to “what does this image look like? how can i draw this”

It doesn’t always work, but it teaches kid to channel energy and focus instead of wondering what “stop” means. Because “stop” really means “do something else”.

YES OP!!!!

So many parents don’t realize their kids are BORED! That they have the same feelings and worries that you as an adult do, and that giving them an engaging task actually helps them change the behavior you have a problem with.

One of the first lessons I learned about teaching when I worked as an aide at my religious school was not to tell kids to “stop” running or “stop yelling” but to phrase things in the positive. For example - Stop running becomes “Please walk.” No yelling becomes “Use an inside voice.” This turns the request/rule into a positive action they can think about, rather than a way to shut down a negative.

Similarly, the reason so many kids use their parents phones is 1) they see you doing it all day, and they want to be like you. 2) they are BORED, and just like when YOU are bored they know the magic rectangle has entertainment. 3) parents literally forget they can make sure their kids have other forms of entertainment available.

I’m talking about your kid having a book to read, a note pad to write or draw in, small dolls or toys to play and fidget with. My mom never left the house without a bag of crayons in her purse and a little notebook. That way if we kids forgot to bring something to do and we’re feeling antsy we would always have something to channel out energy into.

This post makes me think about the time I was on the train and there was a family of four sitting in front of me and my partner. The boy was reading a books but the girl was whining about being bored and asking for one of her parents phones. They kept just saying no and not offering to engage her in any other way. Half out of a desire to help and half out of not feeling like listening to her whine I offered to let her doodle in the sketch book that I had brought along with me (my mother trained me well).

Y’all. Her eyes lit UP! What could have been an agonizing 45 minute ride for so many people turned into a moment of joy for her parents, for her and her brother, and for me. I really just can’t stand people who have nothing better to do than hate on kids when literally all they need sometime is someone to step up and care about them and their needs.

This got long, but the point is finding ways to help kids and young people find the joy is sometimes so easy, and remember: if you’re bored, they might be too.

here's my hot take about my generation and people younger than me (I'm 22 years old)

The reason current teenagers and people in their really early 20s are conservative on accident and have such shitty takes on the internet is because our generation was much more sheltered than previous generations and because we were raised to be ok with orwellian servailence and that is 100% the fault of our parents, Reagan Era kidnapping panics, and the rise of technology all coming together to prevent us from doing the sketchy shit that sends parents into panic mode but which is also completely fundemental to childhood development. If your parents had even a crumb of money to their name and even a shred of free time they started tracking your phone as soon as it was possible to. I did not experience this because my parents are actively trying to live like it's the 1990s and still have not gotten cell phones of their own, and did not let me have one until I was 18 years old and it was no longer their choice, but literally over half of my friends in middle and high school had their phones tracked by their parents at some point or other, and we would occasionally find this out, not because their parents told them, but when we were trying to do the aforementioned sketchy shit and their parent's car would pull up. And I would, like a reasonable person after finding this out, encourage my friends to just leave their phones at home, and their response would be "What if I get kidnapped" or "My parents are just trying to keep me safe"

This in my estimation has lead to a combination of kids being terminally online because they do have internet access and are better at deleting search history than their parents think they are, but don't have the freedom to go out and do shit without their parents' knowledge or consent, so they have the most privacy from the people who control their lives while they're on the internet, and kids not having the real world experiences they should have, not knowing how to connect with other people irl, not feeling comfortable leaving the house because of the horror story lies their parents told them to make them ok with the surveillance they were inflicting on their kids. Kids these days are growing up in the fucking panopticon when they should be out in the woods playing with knives or stealing cigarettes from their older sibling and going out to an empty parking lot to smoke them or whatever and that shit is sticking with them into adulthood. Things that were "tee hee we could get in trouble isn't this so fun and daring" in the 1990s and 2000s have become in the 2010s and 2020s things that are "If I do that without texting my parents some sort of lie to excuse where my location is my parent's car will pull up and I will get grounded for the next two weeks."

Like even when I was 19 I had a 16 year old friend who would volunteer their time at a food shelf and that's how we knew each other. We would talk about dungeons and dragons together, and the game store was 4 blocks from the food shelf. One day we left the food shelf earlier than they had told their parents they would and they got punished for that. We were literally just going to look at dungeons and dragons miniatures and dice, which was self evident if you could see where we started and how far we walked and where too. I have to assume that this isn't uncommon. It's wrong, but it's not uncommon.

For those with homes built to keep heat in, not let it out: aluminum foil your windows, shiny side out. Cover the window, tape up the sides, maybe tape cardboard behind it to help insulate from the heat outside and absorb heat that gets through the foil.

Love, a former Californian, whose had to keep houses cool without any electricity.

P.S. this is a method endorsed by FEMA and the Department of Energy, so if you need more than anecdotal evidence, there ya go.
