This has been done to death already, but here's yet another rant as to why Astarion is such a well written example of an abuse survivor. It just struck home on SO many levels.
1. Feeling like other people shouldn't be helped because nobody helped you when you needed it. You resent anyone who gets helped or treated kindly because, what was so wrong with you that nobody bothered to help you? What's wrong with you? At its core, it's immature, but it feels SO WRONG and unjust that everyone else gets a helping hand but you were left to rot. It takes a long time to grow past the resentment and bitterness, and even now I still catch myself slipping back into that mindset.
2. The CONSTANT PEOPLE PLEASING and wanting to entertain people, simultaneously wanting their approval and wanting them leave you the fuck alone. And at the end of the day, all the smiles and laughter is obviously so fake, and other people still see through it because it's totally disingenuous. Because it's an act, and it's not even well-acted. That's something I loved about the character - he's constantly trying to be charming, and it comes off as performative and shallow, which it is.
4. Pretending to be vapid and carefree but underneath it all, seething with hatred and resentment. Anger. Lots of sadness.
5. Being terrified of people but pretending not to be.
6. "Pushing through" the discomfort/disgust in order to please people. Constantly thinking your own needs are unimportant - then going in the opposite direction, ONLY thinking about your needs and fuck everyone else. You have no sense of balance or perspective. You go from 0 to 100. You are "worthless, bottle those emotions up" one second and "fuck the world, I am going to step over everyone to get what I want" the next. Not a healthy, mature middle ground. It's all or nothing, all the time.
7. The revulsion in regards to sex. Sex feels like it will never really be enjoyable, but you also feel pressured to just "get over it" because everyone else enjoys it.
It just hit so close to home, not sure if this post was coherent but I'm sort of in a daze trying to put my thoughts together about this character.
