I fucking love isopod Facebook groups someone just made a post that said "wood mulch does not add nutrients for isopods" and there's a bunch of laugh reacts and 100+ comments accusing them of making the post just for the drama

Hi! what could be a good "feeding" thing for maris? I have two tiny ones that somehow appeared an a jar with a bigger one, and i want to help them grow faster. I heard carbonated water may be good, but i also heard it may burn them? thanks!
yes, carbonated water burns marimos because it's literally acid. do NOT put marimos into carbonated drinks, it will kill them from the inside out - it's worse than leaving them in direct sunlight for hours. do not even put them into carbonated drinks as a "treat"/once in a while. a better "treat" is sticking them in the fridge for the night, if they like that. alternatively, ice cubes are also a good "treat."
rainwater and distilled water are ideal for them, but rainwater carries the risk of parasites and unwanted algae. tap water and bottled water isnt ideal, but will work fine if your marimo isn't picky.
you cannot help a marimo grow faster - they're inherently slow-growing plants, growing at about 5mm per year. the best you can do is keep them alive by giving them daily cold water changes, and keep them out of direct light
hope this helps, friend :0)
I've been looking to buy a marimo. Any idea where the best place would be to buy one from?
Petsmart or other big-brand pet stores usually have them! They can be found in the aquatic sections. They're also available online on places like ebay, although theres a risk of getting a fake marimo there
HI!!!! i was wondering where i should let my african snails (which im getting this week) have their outside-of-their-cage time, should i put them in the garden orr????
absolutely not! they should never be outside or in a place where they can potentially interact with local snails, even if that just means 1 local snail walking across your snail's trail. i would even recommend that you not interact with any local snails unless your hands have been thoroughly washed. exotic snails are known to carry snail-borne diseases which, if passed to a local population, could completely wipe them out and ruin your local ecosystem. there's no way to know if your snails (or by extension, you) carry snail-borne diseases but it's better to be safe than sorry.
outside of their cage time can mean handling or letting them explore a snail-proof place in your house while under supervision. you can take them outside, but they should never touch anywhere which another local snail could touch, so i advise against it.
hey!! I got some marimo moss balls a while ago, and they came with slight yellow spots in the delivery. I didn't think much of it since I figured the trip might've been kind of bumpy and all, but lately, they've been smelling bad when I clean them out and releasing brown water when I squeeze them. I've been making sure that the water that they're in is changed out regularly and is kept pretty cold, I've also been adding tiny amounts of salt as well, but it doesn't seem to be helping. They're also coming apart in clumps, so I'm not really sure what to do.. though, I noticed they were already shedding quite a bit when they first arrived. If you have any advice, that would be more than appreciated and thank you for your time <33
hi friend,
i'm sorry to tell you this but it sounds like your Marimos are rotting. this likely isn't at all at your fault - Marimos which are farm-grown can be grown in less than ideal conditions (glued together by aquarium-unsafe glue, straight up fake marimos, and things like this ^^^) and Marimo scams are quite common. again, this isn't your fault and it's really difficult to tell whether a Marimo farm is a scam or not. i should probably make a post at some point on ways to tell LOL...
The good thing about Marimos is generally speaking, they're extremely durable. If there's any green parts left on your Marimo, those are alive parts! to "save" your Marimo you can rip those parts off and start growing them in a separate tank. Anything yellow, white, brown, or stinky is dead and you can throw it away (in a food compost is best.) If you decide to keep your Marimo in one piece, there's a risk that even the green parts will start to rot and eventually the entire Marimo will die.
i know this news stinks (ha) but there may still be hope! best of luck my friend :0) <3
are garden snails ok pets? what can i feed them, and how can i get them calcium?
A lot of species are called garden snails. I have personal experience with Cornu aspersum, which make great pets. They only live a few years, and even shorter if you catch them when they're already big. You can feed them pretty much any non-toxic and pesticide-free plant material, from fruit to weeds to grass to vegetables. Just make sure it's varied. In the wild, snails also snack on dead animals, so they need an animalian protein source to really thrive - I feed mine soggy fish pellets and cat food. For calcium, cuttlebone is the best. It can be bought at most pet stores, but it's a lot cheaper to buy in bulk online.
I’m guessing by “garden snails,” you mean “local snails” and as Poppy said above, yes, they’re great companions! They’re also a much better alternative to exotic snails (which are illegal in most places to own because they can carry snail-borne diseases which can spread to local populations via You & destroy the ecosystem there) partially because if you ever need to rehome them, you just... put ‘em back outside. Exotic snails cannot be rehomed to Outside under any circumstances, and finding another person to care for them can be difficult.
As Poppy said as well, they really like pretty much any plants (smaller snails tend to dislike fruits and tomato though, which are way too acidic for them and can burn their skin.) A favourite of many is lettuce or cucumber, although snails can become easily addicted to any food if they’re given too much of it and have no variety in their diet; addiction often means refusing to eat other foods or starving completely. Egg shells, cuttle bones, or calcium powder are really great as far as calcium goes. Snails also like boiled (& cooled) eggs for protein :0)
Your snail’s diet may depend on the specific breed or individual (my old snails didn’t like egg shells or cuttle bone at all, so all of their food was dusted with calcium powder which they ate and absorbed through their skin.) so when you first take them in, leaving out a couple different food options is a good idea.
They’ll also need daily mistings with rain water or distilled water, and when you handle them be sure to wash your hands before and after ^_^
How do I know if my moss ball is a girl or a boy? And do they even have a gender?
marimos don't have a sex - they're agender (or in a more literal sense they're intersex) and they reproduce asexually :0)
Hi, marimo newbie - thank you for the salt suggestion! Just wanted to confirm if 5% is safe for maris - I keep them in a glass jar, about 700 ml in volume, so 5% would be nearly 3 generous teaspoons of salt. I'm afraid to hurt them. I try and change water every 7-10 days, and I've noticed the worms dislike cold, so I let marimos chill in the fridge for a few hours every now and then. As for decaying I suppose they're fine since they don't smell bad. I'll try your way!
yeesh lol yeah 3 tablespoons is probably way too much! the 5% recommendation is assuming that folks have a relatively small container for their marimo . you could maybe to 1/2 teaspoon for that much? also good on you for noticing they hate cold water - frequent water changes may help suffocating them out. you my also consider adding ice cubes to their tank (maybe 3 or 4 at a time? in my marimo's tank they dont last super long) in between water changes to keep things cold.
Hi! I'm new to marimos, and I feel like mine accumulate a lot of brownish waste quickly (within a week). I rinse them and change the water, but it starts to get dirty on the same day =( is that normal? Also, I found detritus worms, and I'm not sure how to get rid of them, any advice? Thanks!
hi friend,
detrius worms typically live inside substrate because their tiny bodies can fit in there. if there's no substrate within your aquarium, they could be living inside your marimo. they typically feed on decomposing plants (or animals) so given that your marimo is accumulating brown waste quickly, that could either be your marimo decaying or waste from the worms.
doing a deep-clean of your marimos aquarium is the best option - all algae scraped off the glass, your marimo gets a good shower with a gentle (but still thorough) scrub. if your marimo has any white-tipped hair, you may want to take a little par of scissors to it - it's dead matter which the worms will use as food. you'll also want to perform frequent water changes - they thrive in unclean, gross conditions.
i can't find any sources stating whether they're freshwater or saltwater worms, im assuming fresh, so you may want to try adding uniodized salt to the water at every water change - dissolve about 5% (5% of whatever the total volume of water is in their house. just eyeball it!) into a small bit of hot water and then add the salt water concentrate to your marimo's normal cold water. salt doesn't dissolve right in cold water - you can still do it this way if youd like, but in my experience its not as effective.
I've been using a little of tetra aquasafe Betta water conditioner with my Marimos water, is this ok/beneficial for them? I don't want them to be hurting
That's perfect for Marimos!
Xenogender 101
“Xenogender” refers to a specific type of nonbinary gender. “A nonbinary gender identity that cannot be contained by human understandings of gender; more concerned with crafting other methods of gender categorization and hierarchy such as those relating to animals, plants, or other creatures/things. It’s mainly an umbrella term for genders with themes such as nouns, archetypes, synesthetic experiences, neurodivergences.”
Why Use Xenogender Labels? Many people feel that they can describe their gender with nouns or other descriptors other than typical gender terms (male/female, masculine/feminine, neutral/nonbinary, etc). In the way that a nonbinary person may feel male-aligned or feminine-aligned, a nonbinary person could feel that the way they experience gender is more aligned with, say, an animal or a planet. They’re more easily able to explain the way their gender feels through an object, creature, archetype, etc. than through typical gender descriptors.
Examples Of Xenogenders:
- Genderblank: A gender so indescribable that the only thought one gets when trying to describe it is a blank space.
- Delphigender: A mysterious, obscure and sinister gender that is entirely seperate from male and female.
- Fascigender: A gender experience largely related to an autistic person’s special interest.
Xenogenders aren’t only for ND people, but are often used by those of us whose neurodivergence affects how we perceive ourself and gender. Genders specifically relating to neurodivergent experiences are called neurogenders.
Xenogenders Aren’t The Enemy Of “Real” Nonbinary People. Victim-blaming helps no one. Trying to blame other people who’re trying to find terms to describe their gender is a slippery slope, and trying to guilt people back into the closet to appease cishet people is never going to work. We do not exist to be palatable to them. Gatekeeping is the act of attacking the perceived “weakest link,” and very quickly, that could be you. As a community, we need to stand together against transphobia and it’s actual cause: Transphobes.
Xenogenders Are Real Genders. Xenogenders can be hard to understand at first, it’s important to understand that these terms are coined because someone out there was genuinely needed a label that felt fitting and that describing their experience by relating it to something unique helped them. Sometimes this will be things that seem “silly,” like media, aesthetics, and other unique things. You may not understand how something can be a gender, and that’s okay. Sometimes we as human beings will not be able to completely understand an experience because it’s one we will never have, and that doesn’t mean the experience is invalid.
This is modified from my xenogender explanation Carrd, which features quotes from @neopronouns.
hi sorry if i dmed you and asked i have the worst memory if i did please ignore this, but i, found a garlic snail in my apartment complex and their shell is extremely broken and about a fifth of the bottom is gone and thats where they stick their head out. i dont think thats how they are supposed to look? any tips or anything :(( i really dont want this one to get hurt
They’ll be okay in time. Garlic snails (also called glass snails) have extremely thin and fragile shells, so although it’s not good that this happens, it’s pretty common.
If the snail is in your care I’d recommend buying some calcium powder to dust their food with :0) i did this by using a cheap thick makeup brush and coating their food with it completely. even if they walk over it, their skin will still absorb it.
Hey I was looking to get more moss balls and I was wondering where I can find them since petco isn't selling them atm :0) do u have any recommendations?
Petsmart is where I got mine. It seems like most big-brand pet chains have them :0)
You can also buy them online (ebay is best from what I know,) although you run a higher risk of being sent a fake marimo or a glued marimo
hello!! i have 6 land snails in a ten gallon tank, but yesterday when i took them outside for a little walk i found a garlic snail. ive never taken care of these kinda before, should i house them in the same space as my larger land snails or in their own container? is their diet any different?
Aw, so cute! I had some garlic snails a few years ago. They’re super cool snails, if you flip them over, you can watch their heart beat on the underside of their shell.
I’d house them seperately for a little while, just until you know their temperament (specifically with being handled) - glass snails are prone to being a bit more aggressive than other breeds (which, i know, is very shocking considering their size and how fragile their shells are,) so if it doesn’t respond to being handled very well, i wouldn’t house them with your other snails at all. I’d say give this about a week at least. If you don’t normally handle your snails, you still can with something like a probe instead of your hands. As long as you’re interacting with them physically in some way.
They have the same diet and needs as most other breeds (veggies.) In my experience their favourite food is generally carrots & you may want to put a little extra calcium powder on their food as well, but it’s not necessary.
