im just thinking about art or installations that require context or interaction to be realized as art now.
like ai weiwei’s video of various people saying “fuck you motherland” in their native language might not be seen the same way if you didnt know he was a political activist who has been openly critical of his government for years.
felix gonzales-torres’ untitled (portrait of ross in LA) might be considered as just a pile of candy if you didnt know the context of the weight of the pile (175 pounds) reflecting an ideal weight for a healthy male and how ross, the artist’s partner, died of AIDS the year the installation was created.
even duchamp’s fountain, which plenty of people interpret as him knowingly pushing pretentious artist’s boundaries by grabbing a random urinal, signing it, and putting it on display, could be considered a performance. because making people upset IS a performance and its a very popular clickbait technique on the internet right now!
i dont know where i was going with this but. yeah.
OH Untiled (portrait of ross in LA) was at the Milwaukee Art Museum (or still is, I haven't been there in 23984 years) BUT for a long time, it didn't have any kind of context or explanation, it was literally candy in a pile by the wall with tape around it. When I was a teen, it drove me nuts because I was like, an asshole, and was really into the idea of what 'art' really is and what it means. But the context blew me away when they finally added a plaque with his intention and the story behind it. LIKE OH, this is important and personal and heartbreaking and brutal.
