I'm a dork

@hannieschaftlover

🏳️‍🌈My name is Fran (she/her) and I am very good at fangirling | queer | very tired | probably dehydrated again

I haven't seen anyone talking about Jordan Gray yet, which is absolutely insane. For those who don't know (and I'm assuming that's most of you)

[Image Description: a news headline that reads "Jordan Gray: Trans comedian strips naked on Channel 4 for Friday Night Live" /end id]

[Video Description: Jordan Gray is on a blue-lit stage wearing a pink suit, playing the keyboard. She says to the audience, "You know the best thing about live tv? I can do stupid stuff like this." She stands up from the keyboard, moves over to be completely unobscured from the audience, and in one movement tears her suit off, revealing herself naked underneath. The nudity is censored with pixelation. She returns to the keyboard and continues playing. She says something indistinct to the cheering audience. /end id]

and this is so fucking important. There is, of course, the expected negative reaction. However, a lot of positive support too, including the audience for that show, and from the company in charge of Friday Night Live, who approved the stunt beforehand. But even so the bravery required for this is insane, and doing it on terf island no less.

But in addition to being a good bit of shock value, I think it's a genuinely amazing piece of performance art. Cis people think they're entitled to know everything about our bodies, and this is a parody of that idea.

There's an uncensored version of this clip which also shows her striking the final note on the keyboard with her penis before dancing around the stage a bit more and leaving, as well as an audience reaction shot or two.

This version of the clip also more clearly shows something that I think is important; Gray is very attractive. The video isn't really "sexy," but still, she's clearly an attractive woman and I think that's also very important to the art. Cis people expect trans people to be hideous or mutilated, but Jordan Gray looks like a model. I could keep talking forever but I'm ending the post here.

random thought:

I think "sex is just another activity you can do with a person" arose as a response to the conservative christian "sex is the most Sacred Important Thing Ever and you HAVE to do it Correctly and only Within Marriage or it's The Most Damaging Sinful Thing That Tarnishes You Eternally." Which definitely needed to be criticized.

however when I see it expressed as like "sex isn't a special activity or inherently different than other things" I think. Well it is though?

I mean that being allowed into the intimate boundaries of another person's body inherently has more responsibilities (making sure the other person feels safe, caring about their comfort and pleasure, communicating clearly) than like...going on a walk in the park with that person

Which really just more starkly highlights how twisted purity culture is? "Sex is an activity with special significance" should mean, "If you are being really intimate with someone and you don't care about their pleasure and wellbeing and listen to their wants and needs, you could really, REALLY hurt them," not "If you have sex with anyone except the single person you've gotten married to and are committed to for the rest of your life, gross fungus literally grows on your soul."

okay, follow-up to this post

you, personally, can feel that sex is a casual activity without any special significance. That's fine

However, a person's physical body is, I think, very, VERY different than their car, an hour of their time, or a book you borrow from them.

If you borrow someone's book and don't give it back, decide to hike the trail you want instead of the one your friend wanted to hike, or refuse to turn off the music in your car that your friend hates, you're a bit of an asshole but you are not a rapist.

There are degrees.

If you give someone food and lie about the ingredients to trick them into eating it, you're still not a rapist but you've done something horrible. If you know someone hates hugs and you hug them anyway, you're creepy and people should stay away from you, but it's still worse if you know someone doesn't want sex and you make them have sex anyway.

Consent should matter throughout life, but consent in regard to a person's body carries more weight than respecting their preferences about things external to them.

If we framed sexual consent as basically the same as respecting someone's choice about what movie they want to see or what store they want to go shopping at, that would be really bad.

Whenever I've brought this up, it seems like I get "well, you shouldn't coax your friends do other stuff they don't want to either!" which seems a little out of touch with reality, because there are occasions when people decide to be a good sport about something they don't enjoy for the sake of someone else, and if that thing is a bad romantic comedy movie, it's very different than if that thing is sex.

Now, can people with a healthy sense of their boundaries approach sex with the same framework? Sure, if they want to. Should this be the default approach to sex? HELL NO.

I think that healthily having a "casual" attitude toward sex where it is nothing "more" than just another activity requires a good sense of your own desires and boundaries and confidence in asserting them. "Sex is just another thing you can do with someone" is good for people who know themselves well enough to feel secure and confident making that call, but it sucks as a starting point for defining the significance of sex to humans.

Something that involves letting another person within the personal boundaries of your body doesn't have to have a "special" significance to it, but you have to undergo the process of figuring out what significance it has to you. Does that make any sense

Wait. They aren’t jokes. You guys really keep dozens of tabs open on your browser forever.

What if I want to return to my search for obscure russian idioms or go back to rereading 17776? What am I supposed to do, spontaneously remember that that was a thing I was doing, completely unprompted by visual stimulus or external reminders, and renew my search from the beginning in a fresh new tab? No, my cluttered nightmare of tabs is a way better solution if i ever even hope to come close to getting back to the things i leave for later.

As it becomes winter again... and as somebody who once popped out his kneecap by slipping on ice, I would like to remind my followers that slip on shoe spikes exist.

You can usually get ones like these for around $10, and they're really worth it. They're made of rubber, so you can just fold them up, and I've been using mine for a couple of years now.

And if you use a cane, don’t be afraid to get one of these bad boys:

[Image: The bottom of a cane, with an ice grip attachment. The end has several metal spikes for gripping ice and snow.]

The tip is on a hinge. You pinch the white knobs together and the ice tip just sorta flips around and up against the cane, so you can use it on dry floors indoors without removing it entirely! This thing has saved me from so many falls in the winter.

It's not quite winter again, but here we go again

Ice grip attachments for CANES?! Hell yes. BRB, buying a few.

please block me if you read books with death in them. i don’t care your “reason” - it’s clear you have a death fetish, are pro-necrophilia, and think killing is okay. i don’t care if someone you know died recently or if you have a terminal illness. it is not okay to consume fiction with death in it to cope. and that’s that on that, you freaks. pro-death crowd dni.

this is absolutely not a "go vote or you're evil!" post BUT you should know that if you're registered to vote in Oregon, Alabama, Louisiana, Tennessee, or Vermont you have the opportunity to vote to abolish prison slavery this year, and i think you should strongly consider it.

from the washington post:

"The 13th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution bans slavery or involuntary servitude, except when it is used as punishment for a crime.
If passed, the proposals would wholly abolish slavery in those states, though they would not automatically change protocols on prison labor or inmate pay.
[...] the bills could give lawyers more license to pursue greater rights and higher pay for U.S. prisoners; Dolovich said that paying inmates below the minimum-wage protections set by each state is arguably 'a species of slavery.'
'It’ll be a fight in court. This question will be manifested by lawyers bringing cases on behalf of incarcerated workers,' she said. 'It’s a hopeful sign for me.'"

(Source; warning for more detailed discussion of prison slavery and related cruelty in the article)

so again, if you're able to vote and live in Oregon, Alabama, Louisiana, Tennessee, or Vermont, please consider it. prison abolition will not happen solely via voting it away but if these pass it will certainly be a victory and hopefully a stepping stone for other victories.

maybe it is just my personal opinion but if ur a white person and had a phase where u were going down the alt right pipeline or were a full blown nazi and ur now . like reformed and gay or trans or whatever perhaps it’d be best to not mention it or if you do, talk about it with shame and not yknow, meme it, like i don’t see the humor in “i was almost a kkk member but then i came out as gay ^_^ silly me” wheres the joke

it would be really awesome if the white people reblogging this didn’t treat my notes like a confessional booth, i don’t actually need to know about how you used to scream slurs and harass poc less than a month ago or last year, it’s totally ok and actually encouraged to just be quiet and let the post speak for itself, you ranting about how bigoted you were and how much you wanted to kill brown people before reforming is not something i need to be told about, i can see your tags, this post has 20k notes, i don’t need to be reminded every few seconds that a majority of you wanted to harm my people less than a week prior to you realizing you were lgbt, you can reflect on your past silently, because right now a lot of you are speaking about what you’ve done as if you want sympathy or a pat on the back for no longer being nazis, i will not give you a cookie for that, you donot deserve praise for doing the right thing, if you’ve actually grown away from that behavior you’d understand this

Hello! I’m Talia Feshbach, a linguistics major at Bryn Mawr College researching self-censoring on social media sites, specifically TikTok, Tumblr, and Twitter. Self-censoring is the practice of censoring taboo or forbidden words through character replacement or euphemism - for instance, writing ‘kill’ as ‘k!ll.’ I’m conducting an anonymous survey about people’s self-censoring habits on these and other platforms. If you are over 18, use any social media, and are a US citizen and/or resident, please consider filling out this survey! https://brynmawr.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3ZXUCkQ6Qk3s9lI

It is only 20 questions long and takes less than 5 minutes. If you can’t respond or aren’t interested, please reblog or pass the survey on. As a quick note: please do not inform me if you have or haven’t filled out the survey, as it is intentionally anonymous. Feel free to contact me at tfeshbach@brynmawr.edu if you have any questions.

Let’s all help Talia!

“Our side concocted the ‘bathroom safety’ male predator argument as a way to avoid an uncomfortable battle over LGBT ideology, and still fire up people’s emotions.”

COLOUR ME FUCKING SURPRISED

I want people, in particular cis people, to read this and understand what it means.

It means that these groups, these organizations, are so Hellbent on getting trans people outlawed, hurt, and killed, that they will openly lie and admit to lying to stir up emotions. They have no qualms with actively lying and distorting reality.

They have no qualms about misleading people. Actively lying to people.

They don’t care how immoral their actions may be, how much their rhetoric flies in the face of reality, as long as it reaches their end goal of the destruction of “transgender ideology.”

MassResistance and all their ilk want us dead, and should never be trusted, not even for the most trivial of matters. They should be rejected, reviled, despised, because nothing they do is in service of anything but hatred and evil.

And in case anyone actually doubts this, and wants to cry “fake news,” here’s MR’s actual article. Should it get deleted, here’s an archived version. Some choice bits under the cut, if you want to see how vile these people really are.

Also worth reminding everyone that the lie doesn’t magically become true when it’s spread by putative feminists in stead of conservatives.
