Why does the middle one look so mortified?

In Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2, an obscure humorous interaction happens when Mario touches another power-up while in Rainbow Mario form. The power-up in question is tossed offscreen in an extremely large arc. Note the Fire Flower flying off in the footage.

(Note: the Fire Flower and Rainbow Star were placed in that location through hacking for demonstration purposes, however, the same effect also happens in unmodified gameplay.)
