So what I found out, later, as an adult, when I brought up my disgust that this play structure had been torn down for No Apparent Good Reason, is that the splinter thing was just an excuse they gave to us because we were ten years old and they had to say Something. The actual reason this structure got ripped down and replaced?
Because the treatment used on the wood to preserve it was found to be carcinogenic. Apparently because of arsenic, according to this article.
So, yeah. Safety hazard.

It's actually a song about self loathing and grief over perceiving oneself as undeserving of the love they desire. While this has much in common with the core of incel ideology, the key component it that incels blame this perceived inadequacy and poor self esteem on the women they feel entitled to, whereas Thom Yorke in "Creep" is saying "I hate myself for not being deserving of your love."
